Radio 1 Schedule Changes

Minor bits and pieces but Danny Howard and Pete Tong's show swaps start from the 3rd April with Danny Howard moving to 9pm and Pete Tong at 11pm. Radio 1 Dance Presents starts at 3am early on the 4th April. An interesting change is Huw's BBC Introducing Show from the 5th April is getting cut to 90 mins with a brand new show called BBC Introducing Dance with Jaguar for half an hour from 12:30am.

From the 6th April-9th April, Arielle and Jordan are teaming up to cover Scott for the week with Cel and Katie covering the chart and Dance Anthems the next day.

Scott Bryan reporting Radio 1 is going to four hour shows next week, with Greg, Scott and Grimmy on daytimes. No more extra shifts for Jordan. Not sure where it leaves specialist shows or earlies either. People also being encouraged to present solo, so maybe we won't hear from Chris for a while (or he'll be working from a different studio/home).

Presumably, it'll be:

6-10 Greg

10-2 Scott

2-6 Grimmy

Official press release here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2020/radio1-coronavirus?at_custom4=6603B6F8-6EB4-11EA-80FD-84333A982C1E&at_custom3=%40bbcpress&at_custom1=[post+type]&at_medium=custom7&at_campaign=64&at_custom2=twitter

They've actually gone 4-7, 7-11, 11-3 and 3-7 instead. Adele stays on. Scott and Clara rotating each week (nothing against Clara but I'd rather have Scott's personality show).

Weekends are 4-7, 7-10 and a mammoth 10-3 daytime show (no idea why they've made it different to weekdays) to be shared between Dev and Alice, Jordan North and yes, Maya Jama, for the whole weekend. Four day week remains.

Will be interesting to hear a five-hour Maya Jamathon. In a way.

Isn’t Scott off next two weeks anyway? Why can’t these presenters present from home like Absolute and Global?

He did mention the other day his holiday has been cancelled. So he might be off at all. who knows.

We will have to wait and see.

Probably to do with the playout system they use - Absolute, and some Global stations (usually the non-networked ones) use Zetta, which is probably the industry leader for remote presenting. It lets you control the full playout studio from a web browser, if your PC and internet is up to it, it's pretty impressive.

From what I've heard, Dira isn't the best at a number of fairly basic things, so it wouldn't surprise me if its remote access capabilities were non-existent.

Is Newsbeat still going to happen at the normal times. Also wondering what happens with the Chart and Dance Anthems on Friday. Is the Chart now 2hr 45mins or both are 2hrs?

The Chart shows starting at 3 as does Dance Anthems - I suspect they'll run more of the top 40 from 3-530/545 if Newsbeat still is on, and then Party Anthrms or just have the chart 3-5 and Anthems 5-7?

Dance Anthems pretty easy have the usual format but longer 3-430 classics 430-6 todays and 6-7 future

One of the community stations I work on has gone to 3 live shows a day only with hour gaps of music between presenters so they don't mix and have instructions not to arrive until 30 mins before broadcast starts I am doing drive tomorrow and Friday which will be weird not seeing anyone although listenership is up

One of the others I do has gone to live breakfast and drive only rest of it is being done via Myriad anywhere, which is a great bit of kit

They should keep one of the evening shows dropped too like this week?

I know Jack Saunders is recording his from home. I presume Annie may do the same and then only one of RMC will be live in the studio while the others join via audio link?

I believe all co-presenters, so presumably Chris Stark, one of Matt & Mollie, one of Dev & Alice as well will join via audio link...don't know how they do that?

BBC want all  presenters  to go solo  or join on a audio link. Not sure how it working in terms of details. I am guessing  a phone link. I know the lifehack podcast  has been recorded over Skype.

Looks like Scott is still off next week according to the sounds app schedule

I think Scott’s on next week but is off the following week which would make sense Clara covering

Its quite easy actually software like cleanfeed is available for such things, I am sure the BBC will set their guys up with a proper link

Actually quite excited about hearing the new schedule tomorrow. I’m really interested to hear what Jordans 4 hour show will be like especially as his is only 2 hours of actual content at the moment anyway.

Also, I can see on the schedule that the Anthems shows are being repeated on Easter Monday. Thus time an hour for each year from 2000 to 2014. No idea if their will be student radio presenters again though. But looking at the current world situation, I’m guessing not.

    • I think it's just to replace Wind Down presents... which was in that timeslot, and I'm guessing Chillout Anthems was just a buffer since it'll still be played at 06:00 on Sundays.
    • With listening on the U.K. for the industry in general it is good overall as most stations reach is on the up and shows radio to be more sustainable and stable outlet than linear televisions channels. This RAJAR I think with the increase shift to DAB+ the BBC will be able to say it has it’s audiences for the proposed new stations it wishes to launch and think the new innovative ideas that it seems Jack himself can take credit for on the new music show think the younger under 30 gen z demographic could increase se in that time-slot.
    • Conor Knight is in for Sam & Danni on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. It's Radio 1 at Parklife, 13.00-16.00 on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. Matt & Mollie are in for Greg from Monday 10th to Friday 14th June - it's just Matt on the Thursday. It's Radio 1 at Download, 13.00-16.00 on Friday 14th June.
    • Rajar looking healthy this quarter, with the numbers staying fairly stable.
    • It's made it into the Daily Mail as another reason to bash the station. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13417631/bbc-radio-2-facebook-tiktok-instagram.html
    • I expect that the axing of Chill Out Anthems may be related to the decommissioning and shutfdown of Radio 1 Relax. I assume soon BBC could announce or make official when it’s going to be shutdown
    • The next RAJAR will be putting a lot of pressure on Aled. Will his decisions over Danny Beard and Jamie Laing and to lose Jordan North pay off? If not, it is likely bosses will be looking for his successor.  I am interested to know what fans of the station think?  Ian Chaloner who worked for Greg, Scott and Grimny before rising through the ranks must stand a chance. He is now mainstream editor.  An outsider choice but Greg's former producer Chris Sawyer would be great. He has the creativity and has held the ship well on breakfast. Although I know he is no longer with them.
    • Could this be similar to what Arielle Free did in Covid on Weekend Early Breakfast?
    • Greg is doing Breakfast from 7am-11am on 23rd May which is a thirty minute extension of his usual Friday show and consistent with Big Weekend timings. Also it looks like from the 1st June, Radio 1 Chillout Anthems at 4am is being replaced by Radio 1 Anthems with Maia Beth and will also air at the same time on a Sunday.
    • I mean I've been growing our engagement on Facebook in my department, there's still an untapped audience there. Also, as you alude to, the number of community groups has grown a lot since lockdown. I'd love to hear more about their thinking. If this had been Radio 1's strategy I don't think anyone would have disagreed.
    • I think they must’ve been slowly killing of their social media presence I know for Radio 2 and 6 they do have dedicated unofficial social media groups so there is an audience. All Request Friday and features like that has a place on social media as can get requests via comment sections but I think Facebook struggles to know what it is these days.
    • I just think it's more about what they're doing. If all you've got is a DJ dancing to Beyonce's latest hit for thirty seconds or Sara Cox reading out the All Request Friday number in a funny way it's not really what Facebook prioritises. I think it's great that studio interaction, but it does lend itself to Instagram and TikTok more. But I honestly believe there is a place for Facebook with the Radio 2 audience. The trouble is Radio 2 have barely used Facebook for the last year so there doesn't seem to have been a strategy there.
    • Agree, all I'd see on x was medical professionals from other health trusts having a very carefully worded pop at each other, mixed in with a clip of jeremy vine with a camera on his helmet, a very strange place indeed! I imagine they have some data to back it up, but is the r2 audience really using tiktok?
    • I get not putting resources into X which these days is a strange mix of angry political debate and adult content only. But you'd think Facebook was still the most popular social channel amongst Radio 2 audiences.
    • Radio 2 seem to have decided that their strategy is just short video, so it does probably make sense with Instagram and TikTok. But I find it hard to believe there's not longer form content that wouldn't suit Facebook better.
