Moyles to remain on breakfast until January 2014

MOTORMOUTH DJ Chris Moyles will clock up a DECADE on the Radio 1 breakfast show after signing a £1.25million new deal last night.

The 2½-year contract will take the 37-year-old presenter up to New Year 2014 and will end with his tenth anniversary on the show.

The deal, which starts next month, will stun hopeful rivals who have been hoping he would get the chop for years and make way for them.

But Radio 1 bosses were keen for outspoken Chris - who pulls in 7.5million listeners a week - to mark his tenth anniversary and "go out with a bang". An insider said:

"Whatever anyone says about Chris Moyles, he does the numbers and the listeners love him. We've been thinking long and hard about the breakfast show going forward - and all roads lead back to Chris.

"He loves doing the show so it would be daft to take it off him."

A station source added the extension would give them bosses "breathing space" to find a suitable replacement.

While emerging R1 names such as Matt Edmondson and Greg James are seen as possible heirs, they are said to be still too "green". Fearne Cotton, who follows Chris at 10am on weekdays, has also been talked about as a contender. Scott Mills, 37, would love the job - but he will be too old by 2014.

An R1 spokesman said: "We're pleased to confirm that we've signed a new contract with Chris."

R1 boss Andy Parfitt said: "Chris is a real talent and I believe he has a long future ahead of him here at the BBC."

Moyles, who also presents Chris Moyles' Quiz Night on Channel 4, joined the breakfast show in January 2004.

Last year he was criticised by predecessor Chris Evans, who claimed he was too old for the station.

Great news - if its true. I always have a bit of doubt with Sun sources.

But 10 years on R1 breakfast show would be amazing and would also be the best way to leave. Probably a title that will not be beaten for a long long time

I'm over the flipping moon. *rolls eyes*

Scott will be too old? Rubbish.

Greg is average. Fearne is annoying in large doses.

Matt Edmondson is too green? Well, he's quite blue actually…

OMASM. Radio presenters are like fruit. Matt is my kumquat and Scott is blatantly my orange.

Ooo... ouch. It's actually a pity he ever wound up at the station at the same time as Moyles, or he would so have been in Brekkie. I can't help feeling that for the future this is something that will be written about over and over.

Anyhow, well done Chris. I've been finding him better again for some months now, with the exception of the New Toughest Radio Quiz.

Really hope this is true, hopefully Chris will make some sort of comment about it on the show on Monday. I assume that Chris and Dom will be continuing with him and extending their contracts as well as they're both show regulars and freelance?

with contenders like fearne cotton, i'd rather keep moyles there until he's 70.

Couldn't agree more.

Sorry to burst all of your bubbles - but the Guardian article I read yesterday about this issue made no mention of him 'remaining on breakfast' until then. It simply tied him to the corporation. If they wanted, they could easily push him off to weekends, even Radio 2 or somewhere.

Where else would they move him to? Radio2 probably hates him, he would probably do well on an all-talk show but there's not really any slots for him and he'd have to do more serious stuff with it. I know he CAN go more serious when he needs to but his style is more light-hearted, also there's no real reason to move him while he's still doing so well.

At the end of the day, if the BBC wanted to move Chris from that slot the only real person who would be good in it would be Scott, but with other things going on is it really likely that he would be available for a permanant breakfast show? I'm thinking with his DJ work in particular.

Ok so Dave and Dom from the current breakfast team do DJing at nights occassionally but I don't think it has much of an effect on the show as they are part of a team rather than being the main presenter like Scott is.

On the whole the listeners like him (apart from those who don't like him and havent worked out that if you don't like something you don't listen to it so they're the only real idiots in this situation) and the show is still good so there really is no reason at all to move Chris and/or the team anywhere else.

    • I agree Scott has always been a good standalone presenter, but always better when with someone. When chappers left the radio one show it felt a different show and Chris joining was what it needed and brought new life. for the format of the radio 2 show Scott’s show fits well with the station but again, there’s the huge gap between radio1 and 2 As been said already old radio2 listeners feel it now feels too young with latest changes, yet old radio1 listeners still feel radio 2 feels too old. The inbetween stage demographic of too old for radio 1 but too young for radio 2 is still not catered for radio 2 was left to grow old with its audience for too long and to change things up now feels to try and change a brand image the right thing to do is leave it as it is and cater for that 1.5 demographic which I’m sure the new proposed 00s and 10s station will do if approved. Problem is it’s so overdue that by the time it gets off the ground these listeners are already likely to be lost and the changing image of radio2 likely to lose what it stands for as a brand with the “it’s too young now “  moving to boom and the “ it still sounds old “ crowd not able to move with their favourite presenters like Scott so finding themself on capital a radio 1.5 would have been perfect for Scott and Chris, seems unlikely but this is why I think who branding of bbc radio needs a rethink if these new stations get off ground
    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
    • Some similar names to Big Weekend.  Sabrina Carpenter, David Guetta, Perrie, Bradley Simpson, Jax Jones, Caity Baser, Benson Boone, Rudimental. David Guetta is a good name.
    • Still Scott for me. I'm not too much into the 70s and 80s radio 2 play but do love the injection of 90s and 00s. Then Radio 2 push for all this country stuff and it not a UK thing, and I frankly don't like it. Scott's show as in features, hit and miss. I like the music police bit, but it feels like someone needs to join him. It's a shame Chappers is so busy with sports, as it feels like it could do with someone like him jumping on to help. Or a new partner. Radio 1, take or leave. Matt and Mollie are OK from what I've heard and share a good connection, but it's the playlist that throws me off. They could bring back Chris Moyles to do that show, but as soon as something like Headie One comes on with that casino keyboard produced crap. It would still be switched off from me.
    • Reading through this thread, I don't feel quite so alone now, in thinking that Scott Mills on R2 is not a good 'fit' (even less so than on R5).  I can't quite explain why this is so - I just know it to be so.
    • Arielle has been on holiday for the last 2 weeks getting married / honeymoon.  It'll be live from this week onwards.
    • CassKidd is in for Sian on Sunday 5th May.
    • The brought to tiers feature was also very good from them. I did wonder which DJ's were going to get picked out of the hat, that could have gone one way or the other and the caller said they were very opinionated lol. Correct decision putting katie in god tier!
    • The extended Dua Lipa track from M&M was very funny. I'm hoping Matt and Mollie and Scott have a good relationship a bit like Greg and Zoe collaborate on-air sometimes.
    • Gary Davies in for Vernon Kay tomorrow (Monday 29th April).
