Hmm wasn't it a her-uge cloud of dust and ash that is thought to be one possible cause for the extinction of the Dinosaurs (albeit brought on by impact of an asteroid)?

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure there was something from space landing in America very recently... (meteor or summat)

Indeed!

January, just before the Haiti earthquake, it's announced we're doing earthquakes in geography.

Before Easter, it's announced we're going to start volcanoes in geography.

I really hope there's no 'Armageddon' or 'Mass World Destruction' or even 'Nuclear Weapons Testing.. Gone wrong' geography projects...

We're doing revision in geography. Does that mean the world is going to end and then start again, but only as a pale imitation of its former self?

Ohai.

Dave mentioned a programme on Channel 5 tonight called Volcanic Ash - Flight Of Terror. Very inappropriate show, and very bad timing considering the air space has only just opened.

Synopsis

Documentary exploring the harrowing story of British Airways Flight 009, which filled with sulphurous smoke after flying into a cloud of volcanic ash. All four of the 747's jet engines failed, sending the aircraft and its 263 passengers plunging towards the Indian Ocean.

Totally deliberate scheduling... not sure if a fail or not really as they probably showed it to make a point.

no surprise there's now a row about who should take the costs. Surely NATS who made the call to lockdown should be the ones who pay? After all, they are about the only ones involved who haven't really lost financially (that I can tell) as yet.

That's a very good justification! :P

I think they should split it between the airlines and NATS....

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary said that one customer who had a 9euro ticket had submitted a 800euro bill for accommodation & other stuff, thats taking the piss !

i hope that Ryanair, BA & the other airlines successfully sue the government & EU for compensation they are the ones to blame no the airlines as they said there was no problems with the ash & wanted to fly but the government & EU wouldn't let them.

Oh piss off is it the government's fault! Would everybody have rather they verged on the other side of caution and then some plane crashed and loads of people died? No.

Agreed. No one has died because the governments have closed air spaces, and inconvenienced several thousand people. I'd have sooner it had been like this than a plane crashing to ground and killing who knows how many people. Safety and lives first

the evidence provided by the airlines, engine manufactures, Boeing & Airbus said it was ok to fly, the politicians, health & safety said that it wasn't.

the question is, how many of the stranded people given the choice of flying or being stranded would have taken the option to fly.

Alan, these rules are in place for a reason. It is a serious danger to Jet engines to fly through ash. NATS had a good grounding for erm... grounding the planes, and I would of been shocked if they hadn't. With air Travel, safety HAS to come before profit, even if it does cause severe inconvenience. At the time, there was evidence to suggest the skys weren't safe.

And of course all them companys were saying it was safe. They were losing revenue! The evidence produced (as far as I have seen) was shaky; they hadn't done anywhere near enough tests to check how safe they were. Ash damages over time, so going up for a pissy little flight like what BA done was a pointless waste of time.

Let me remind you, Ash clouds have brought planes down.

I'll shu'up now...

Those people have no knowledge of the dangers - it's not their decision to make. The airlines had a motive to argue that the skies were safe - NATS had no motive to be anything but impartial.

    • Maia Beth is in for Mollie on Future Pop on Wednesday 12th June.
    • Maybe that will be Arielle then and go up against Cap Dances 11am mix
    • I think being the radio geek Greg is he will want to beat Moyles record
    • It must be really weird for the likes of Vick and RMC to see Scott in 82A it must be like he never left for them
    • It's amazing how stable that slot has been over the past 20 years - 3 presenters only. By comparison, the previous 20 years seen 8 or 10 presenters depending how you measure it.  (Whether you treat Kevin and Zoe as separate to Zoe and whether you count Mark Goodier's 4 months on Breakfast as more than just cover).
    • On July 8th Greg will surpass Grimmy's tenure on Radio 1 breakfast (5 years, 319 days) as the second-longest breakfast show presenter. He has already passed Tony Blackburn and Sim Mayo. I'm not sure if he will make Moyles' record of 8 years, 253 days, but he certainly still seems fresh and full of ideas!
    • I guess we'll have to wait and see when the new schedule kicks in, although I could see Scott staying where he is.  Assuming that's the case and there are no other moves, there would be several available studios for Matt & Mollie - 82C or 82E of the 'old' studios, and 82M or 82N of the new ones.
    • The BBC commissioning brief mentions it is a 'mid morning show' for Radio 1 Dance https://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/radio/documents/comm_brief_r1_dance_morning_show.pdf
    • Nothing to apologise about, I was just intrigued on how DS and UM react
    • I would be pretty confident that if they keep avoiding using James Cusack on that slot over the next few weeks, then it will probably be him that gets the show permanently!
    • That’s two names who probably won’t be doing that slot permanently then.
    • Moyles spent most of the 52hr sgow calling him that lol
    • I stand guilty as charged as the DS poster.... It was I Okay, so yes Connor has good energy and does the show well, I take it back, however, my last experience of him he spent every other link saying "It's Connor Coates in for the ledge that is Charlie Hedges" and then he started saying "Clem Douglas" - again after critisising that I see she is styled as that sometimes The point I was trying to make was, yes we know it's Charlies show, we know she is a ledge, and we know she is not here today, no need to keep reminding us Regards R1 dance, I suspect Arielle is pointed at the drivetime slot to go against Mistajam unless we know it is breakfast that will be live ? Apologies to Connor and anyone offended by my comments, was just going on my past experience of Mr Coates, who seems to be a very competnt presenter
    • I know we have discussed this before, but can someone shed some light hoping @Lily Georgia can help Since the Wogan House closure, and 1-330 from Manchester, studio 82A (Mills) has been used by Scott's R2 show, in fact i note that him and Grandad Nelson are from there now days The question I have is with 1-330 coming from London again soon, who is getting a new studio? will Scott move to one of the newer ones down the corridor or will he remain in 82A and M&M get a new studio They cannot use 82D as that is used for drive, and currenlty 82A is in use by Scott from 2-4pm In the old days it used to be 82A for Greg, Scott, Annie and 82D Adele, RMC, Drive, Jack I note that Jack is in a brand new studio so maybe M&M will come from that one as well, maybe the same one as Vine uses?
