I was ill all last week and missed my dad's birthday yesterday. The worst is the sort of people like my dad who don't seem fussed about it, but probably are. Sure my mum got me something to give to him but it didn't feel personal or anything.

Nah I agree about that. I make it obvious about my birthday by opening presents in front of friends when I'm at work or school. If you don't make it clear you shouldn't expect people to remember.
