I am sick of coming back from the pub and haing my clothes smell. But i dont thin the extraction works well in my local. So when you look at the bar and you see the smoke, it's like a beam of it. And it's frightening that you breathe that in.

They should build pubs like they did years ago with the lounge, bar and the smoke room.

on the grid.

Do people think a public smoking ban will encourage smokers to stop?

If exhaust pipes on cars are allowed to damage our health surely smokers can too? Should we be making efforts to introduce electric cars/environmentally-friendly cars that won't damage our health or the health of the environment?

Do we have a right to stop people entering public places because they smoke? Is this not discrimination?

I don't smoke. I don't like it. But I think the government should be concentrating elsewhere on preventing damage to our health before we get to smokers.

I went to my mum's 50th birthday party and I was told I had to get a new outfit for it, so I did and it ended up stinking of cigarette smoke from the function room. Smokers can smoke all they like, that's fine by me, it's their problem. But when it comes to the pub, I don't want to have to be breathing the smoke in (I have an allergy which can be set off by stuff like smoke amongst lots of other things) and I'd like to think we've moved on from the 1930's fashion.

Go in the pub by me and say that.

Electric cars get you down the street and stop. But there is a new 4x4 that has an electric motor and and engine. The Engine for high speeds and the electric motor for city driving.

If the bill is passed, we still have to wait until summer 2007 before the ban comes into effect and the ban, as I understand, isn't a full ban insofar as smoking is prohibited in every public arena but is banned only in pubs where food is served, workplaces, cafes and restaurants so there will still be areas where smokers are legally allowed to smoke.

o.k here comes my rant....... in mny local the landlord has a two year old daughter and a wife that is littereally going to give birth tomorrow! ban it to save them! i also come home in an awful smell of smoke! but i don't smoke so it effects me by giving me a saw throat. any way it will give the locals something to do having to walk across the road to the bus shelter!

LOVE WILL TEAR US APART

I wonder how this would work in halifax. As some might know my 2nd job is in a bar (Jaks to precise) and at least 75% of the people who drink in there also smoke. After 5hrs of working in there my clothes, hair, hands and things all stink of second hand smoke. If this is all going onto, and lingering, on my clothes, the same must be happening to my lungs. I'm not a smoker but for the sake of extra cash i put myself at risk of illness that smokers get, lung problems, heart problems etc etc. The ban would benefit the workers of bars and clubs and pubs who almost every night breathe the smoke in providing a service to people. So thats why i support it. BUT i cant see it working well. Drugs are illegal so what stops people from dealing them in clubs. Nothing. People still deal drugs in clubs as much as they ever have done. Smokers will find ways around this. Every law as a loop hole and it wont be long before smokers find the loop hole in this law

take control

    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
