Can you master the London tube?

Jono

Recommended Posts

I've only been to London a handful of times, but after my work experience trip I managed to get a hang of the tubes, and don't have to worry about taxi costs. The service isn't perfect though, and I imagine there'll be times I'll get a taxi again, but can you master the tube?

I think the trick is to work out your route beforehand, as people on the tube tend to scuttle about like worker ants, and you can be trampled under foot if you pause for too long to look at the signs.

Most important is to know he colour of line, any changes and always the last station on the line (make sure it doesn't fork before your stop though).

Sounds obvious, but it helped me, especially as I am slightly short-sighted and was always half-asleep whilst using the underground. ;)

It is also often much faster than getting a taxi.

Get an 'Oyster' card - much cheaper, and more convenient.

People who don't know what they're doing are really annoying. Like people who stand on the escalator with all their luggage, completely blocking both sides of it. You stand on the right, so people can walk down the left! How hard can it be...

I generally know which lines to use to get where I want to go. I sometimes have problems on whether I want to go eastbound or westbound but the signs make it quite easy. I don't know which routes are best in rush hour though, or if the route I want to use isn't working (quite a common occurence) I don't know which is the next best option generally. I need my dad for that, he knows which is the best route everywhere, and has helped me get places on time in rush hour that I would never have got to on time myself.

That is one thing that really annoys me when I am in London is when people feel the need to have to walk down past everybody else who is waiting patiently to get to the top/bottom of the escalator. Is it just me that feels the urge to stick out a foot when somebody is walking past? :D

Not everyone is a tourist, we don't all have the time to stand around looking at the same advert go past on the wall! In London, people are pretty busy. You'll also notice that no one talks to strangers on the tube unless they are begging or mad. It's just the way things are.

What annoys me is how this is blatantly breaking the law when you have a whole carriage packed full of people. We're not turkeys. You shouldn't be allowed to do this sort of thing. Yet the government turn a blind eye as they make a lot of money from it.

Very true Jono.

I saw a documentary about Japanese trains (maybe Clive James) years ago. There were actually staff employed at stations to crowbar the poor commuters into the metro, so the doors could somehow shut.

I watched in disbelief; but London was not so far off this during rush hour (ie at least 4 hours a day) when I lived there 9 years ago. Hate to think what it's like now. :(

Haha Geezer - wish I'd thought of that when I was late for work.

She is the voice heard by millions of Tube travellers each day, warning them to “mind the gap”. But now a gap has opened in the career of Emma Clarke after she criticised the Underground system and spoofed her own announcements on the internet.

Tube bosses have said that they will not provide the voiceover artist with any more work. A Transport for London spokesman said: “London Underground is sorry to have to announce that further contracts for Ms Clarke are experiencing severe delays.”

Ms Clarke, 36, from Altrincham, Cheshire, criticised the system in a newspaper interview after she produced spoof announcements on her website. She apparently said that while living in Highgate, North London, she used to take the Tube every day, but had refused to use it any longer because it was “dreadful”.

They can't get rid of her, her "mind the gap" announcements are what makes the Tube!

Last time I used the tube a gang of about twenty black kids came steaming through the train looking for people to rob. The grabbed some blokes mobile in the next carriage up, but came a bit unstuck when some football fans started fighting with them. I had already decided that if they tried to rob me I was going to grab hold of one of them and do as much serious damage to him as I could, and if possible put his head through a window. Fortunately for both them and me they absconded at Sudbury Town.

That hardly ever happens normally though. Most of the time, the worst thing you have to put up with is some git on the platform asking everybody to move down when you're already packed in as tight as you can get.

Oh and tourists standing still trying to work out where to go...

Oh and people complaining that London is so unfriendly cos no one speaks to anyone.

And people who feel the need to stare at the map above their head for their entire journey and kids who give a running commentary on their journey so far and how many more stops to go.

Sometimes here, sometimes not.

The most awkward moment, thankfully, was some Scousers on the train worse for wear shouting "Who gives you Extra?" at a man that looked vaguely like Howard from the Halifax advert. Uncomfortable, but I feel happier knowing there's worse things that could happen.

My worst tube moment was just after we'd got beaten in the rugby, I'd said goodbye to my mates and wsa listening to songs on my phone, got onto a carriage only to realise that I was the only person wearing an England top in a carriage full of S.A. rugby tops! 20 mins I had to endure their endless ribbing. - I did get a free "consolation" beer out of it though.

I've never seen gangs of people robbing on the Tube. I mean there's pickpocketing, but it seems a lot worse in Rome and Barcelona - within 5 minutes of arriving in Barcelona, 2 people had tried to pickpocket us and one nearly got my friend's passport. I think tourists stick out as targets. I see people begging, a guy once sang a song he's made up on the train to try to get money, it was quite a painful experience.

I have travelled on rush-hour Tubes and trains with a large bag, sometimes also with a sleeping bag. That's awkward, because there really isn't space and it p*sses people off, but I couldn't help it.

Next time you are in a hurry to catch a train and its fairly quiet here's a good quick way of managing down the escalator :D

I saw 2 blokes slide down on their arse's on the middle bit  how they did not hurt theirselves on the lumpy bit's I will never know.

Was funny :D

I went on the tube as a small child. It was ok. Mind you, my Nan pretty much held on to my jumper the whole time :) I had a tendency to get lost easily. I got lost in altough towers at 6, I got lost in Notre Dame, Paris...that was probably the worst 'incident'. Wandered off to look at something, turned around, thought I saw my aunt, ended up scarin' the crap out of some chinese lady for trying to hold her hand. To be fair, I was only 5/6 ish at the time

Yay they've re-opened the late night victoria line service. Twas a bugger trying to get home after 10 otherwise.

These tube closures confuse me. It said on the Camden Town tube they close at 5.30 on a Sunday. I walked in and six and had no problem.

    • Just wondering…has any DJ got the answer wrong yet? I’ve not heard one and they are pretty tough questions! 😆
    • On the weekends theme @Bluestraw said this in the chatbox but I was listening live to James cusack's show yesterday and agree it would be a travesty if he doesn't feature in the weekend plans. Both the greg james fb page and users on digital spy are saying similar. Imagine that, being both part of the LGBTQ+ community but able to appreciate good presenters in 2024.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
