Is it weird I genuinely feel a bit sad today.

Jordan and whoever he was with or alone often made me feel happier with whatever was happening in my life/the world.  When you hear the tributes rightly paid to Steve Wright this week, you realise that's what broadcasting is all about.  Not saying Jordan is necessarily in Steve's class but he is certainly well above average and a huge loss.

When Scott left I think I only stayed with Radio 1 as I like Greg and loved Jordan... now I see no reason to stay especially as if Jordan is doing breakfast on Capital and I prefer him to Greg.

Jordan is such a natural presenter, he was born to do this

Jamie Laing is Maya Jama all over again. And we know how that went. Has anyone ever said, "omg, I miss Maya Jama on R1"? No.

I mean my girlfriend said she really enjoyed her shows!

I think that's sometimes the issues with celebrity signings. They become a bit like Kelly Osborne. Off the airwaves more than on.

Annie Nightingale said in her book there's always someone waiting in the wings if you miss too many shows due to illness or whatever. I think there's always an authentic replacement ready and waiting for those celebrities.

This is the first time since I started listening to Radio 1 (2016) that I’ve been genuinely floored by an announcement. There have been a lot of changes and I’ve raised by eyebrows a few times but everything had some element of logic to it even if I wouldn’t have made the exact same choice.
With regards to Jordan I would have bet a lot of money on him being a shoe in for R1 Breakfast next, the succession plan seemed very clear - Greg could go this year or next if he wanted to, after a good run, and you have a ready made Breakfast star in Jordan and the likes of Katie/Sam and Danni/Dean all capable of stepping in on Going Home at that stage.  Jordan at Breakfast and Vick and Katie on Going Home wouldn’t feel like a downgrade from now!  Now Radio 1 seems in a real pickle in terms of succession planning for Breakfast. I can only assume Jordan was given an offer he couldn’t refuse - if it’s him and Chris Stark for Capital Breakfast it’s a coup for Global, a truly national sounding breakfast offering, and something Radio 1 must have been unwilling to give him right now, more power to him! As for Jamie Lang - I won’t be harsh because these are real people and you never know how it pans out, but it’s completely inexplicable to me.  From a show that deliberately pitched itself (they did an interview about this a year ago) as a show aimed at young people outside London to someone from Made in Chelsea, I just don’t know what they’re doing and I have to wonder if it’s a Matt Goodier-style stopgap (he was given Radio 1 Breakfast for a few months in the 90s as the “permanent” host even though it was always a temp holding position), because I can’t see Vick or Jamie committing to a daily show in the long term (I had suspected Vick might not last the year; she’s brilliant but she has so much else going on, hope I’m wrong).  Anyway… let’s see what happens!  All seems a bit of a panic and Radio 1 in a bit of a tailspin this week, suspect Aled will do some serious thinking about the 12-18 month direction the schedule takes from here, suspect it may look quite different.

Edit: If I was R1 management I would cling to Greg James like a life raft right now!  Without him the entire house of cards looks weak.  You need a few years to build up a future Jordan-like “heir” to be the main star on the station.  Shoehorning in the likes of Dean would be calamitous.

This exactly.

It's got to be a stop gap like you say. It's turned from being a show for the north of the country to a show for Londoners, that can't be the full time solution.

Yeah I thought it was very strange how he missed Greg off his goodbye post. He seems a very obvious one to have accidentally missed off.

Edit: He’s added Greg to his post now! Drama over haha

Yep I don't think there was any beef between them. There was a clip on Instagram a week or two back of the two catching up outside of work and the sense you get is that Greg gets on fairly well with everybody.

Contracts often have break points so even though it seems his contract runs until September he may be able to go with 3 months notice or something.

And he will still be paid as it is the BBC's decision not to have him on air.

Sad he didn't get a farewell show tho.

Jordan and Greg have always seemed to get along I don’t think there’s anything to read into there - if anything Greg is probably gutted Jordan won’t be his successor.

They are actually friends as far as we know.

Mind you the pics of Jordan with Sian Welby this week start to take on a new context.

I noticed that on his last show they were talking about the Friday podcast and mentioned recording it, shame that we'll probably never hear it

This is what I don’t get, did they not know this was going to be announced, surely Jordan did?

I feel some of the DJs seemed a bit shell shocked by the announcement too. I dare say they knew he was going, but perhaps expected a farewell celebration on air first.

I suspect it was an open secret but then BBC management decided to axe him when it was all confirmed.

After the Ken Bruce debacle I don’t blame them but very hard for the listeners.

Funny how Chris Stark is giving subtle hints.

    • Greg is doing Breakfast from 7am-11am on 23rd May which is a thirty minute extension of his usual Friday show and consistent with Big Weekend timings. Also it looks like from the 1st June, Radio 1 Chillout Anthems at 4am is being replaced by Radio 1 Anthems with Maia Beth and will also air at the same time on a Sunday.
    • I mean I've been growing our engagement on Facebook in my department, there's still an untapped audience there. Also, as you alude to, the number of community groups has grown a lot since lockdown. I'd love to hear more about their thinking. If this had been Radio 1's strategy I don't think anyone would have disagreed.
    • I think they must’ve been slowly killing of their social media presence I know for Radio 2 and 6 they do have dedicated unofficial social media groups so there is an audience. All Request Friday and features like that has a place on social media as can get requests via comment sections but I think Facebook struggles to know what it is these days.
    • I just think it's more about what they're doing. If all you've got is a DJ dancing to Beyonce's latest hit for thirty seconds or Sara Cox reading out the All Request Friday number in a funny way it's not really what Facebook prioritises. I think it's great that studio interaction, but it does lend itself to Instagram and TikTok more. But I honestly believe there is a place for Facebook with the Radio 2 audience. The trouble is Radio 2 have barely used Facebook for the last year so there doesn't seem to have been a strategy there.
    • Agree, all I'd see on x was medical professionals from other health trusts having a very carefully worded pop at each other, mixed in with a clip of jeremy vine with a camera on his helmet, a very strange place indeed! I imagine they have some data to back it up, but is the r2 audience really using tiktok?
    • I get not putting resources into X which these days is a strange mix of angry political debate and adult content only. But you'd think Facebook was still the most popular social channel amongst Radio 2 audiences.
    • Radio 2 seem to have decided that their strategy is just short video, so it does probably make sense with Instagram and TikTok. But I find it hard to believe there's not longer form content that wouldn't suit Facebook better.
    • These late announcements are so lacklustre. It's not quite like the time they announced Harry Styles last minute!
    • Friday - Nathan Dawe, Wilkinson Saturday - Jax Jones Sunday - London Grammar, Remi Woolf, AJ Tracey
    • Probably got fed up of the usual moaning bastards all over it, asking for Ken Bruce and Jimmy Young back on air.
    • Think it may have been better to include Radio 1 in this and 1 xtra ultimately focus on boosting a BBC Sounds social media to bring the multi-generational content marketed to a broader audience through one singular channel and having a separate social brand skewed to younger audiences maybe they should consider just having a @BBC @BBCSounds  @BBCSport @BBCNews @BBCFresh (youth brand) social media acounts national.
    • Although a lot of their target audience do seem to be moving across to Instagram now.
    • I suppose it's because not a lot of people use Twitter (or X) so maybe it's not worth their time, surprised about Facebook though.
    • Surprised to learn Radio 2 and 6 Music are moving away from X and Facebook, I would have thought there's more appeal in Radio 1 doing that instead. Their target audiences still use Facebook, and it's still a key way to reach a good mix of audiences. Agree about X though, don't see any need for it. https://radiotoday.co.uk/2024/05/bbc-radio-2-and-6-music-quit-facebook-and-x-publishing/
    • Just wondering…has any DJ got the answer wrong yet? I’ve not heard one and they are pretty tough questions! 😆
