Radio 1 to sign Peaches Geldof? (Merged)

WILDCHILD PEACHES GELDOF has landed a top deal to DJ on Radio 1.

The party-loving 18-year-old signed a deal with the station this week - and bosses reckon she's the next big thing.

She'll start alongside ANNIE MAC on her evening shows, reporting on gigs she's seen that week. And if all goes well, she could become the youngest ever DJ on national radio.

Our Radio 1 spy said: "Peaches has been in talks with us for a while but the deal has only just been thrashed out.

"She is very up with the current music scene and is just the kind of person who appeals to our audience."

Radio 1 are going in an odd direction with employment at the moment. Fearne Cotton, and now Peaches Geldof. They just seem very similar and aimed at one audience. It's always been Moyles, Mills and JK and Joel that people talk about at college and out and about. That's what I'd say Radio 1 is about. I've never bumped in to people saying "Did you hear Fearne and Reggie this morning" and I doubt I'll hear people say the same for Peaches. She's cute, but that doesn't work on the radio.

There's a world of difference between a press release and the reality. Peaches is doing a tiny segment on Annie Mac. Considering how unlilkeable she is the rest is pure speculation. If she can actually develop a persona listeners will like, then I guess she'll deserve some success for all the hard work that'll entail on her part.

i believe the story the newspapers arent often wrong about radio 1 related stories apart from the same old waste of license fee stories. she was okay on the bank holiday sunday show with annie mac last month but i had just grown to like annie macs shows i dont want to hear this nobody and i dont want to give her more attention.

it does seem a bit unfair that she can get where she is getting becuase of who she is, there are many great dj's out there trying hard to get going. but give pretty peaches a chance.

Give her a chance because she's (in your opinion) pretty? Not thinking with our nether regions at all here, are we?

The "it's who you know" thing always applys, it's just luck for many good DJs same as many good bands that they eventually get heard by someone influential and promoted.

To be fair because she's someone famous' daughter she's got a lot to live up to. It takes courage (or arrogance) to put yourself forward in those circumstances. Being someone some people think is cute and/or pretty won't cut it ultimately, she has to be likeable or controversial or a mixture of both and to have the technical skills required (BBC training course? I know she's already club DJ'd so shouldn't struggle to drive a desk).

The fact that she's generated this discussion suggests that (at least at first) she's going to be controversial enough to draw in listeners out of curiosity. The BBC employs very clever people indeed on the production side, so we'll wait and see how she does which is no doubt what they'll be doing, too.

it's a term, i dont deserve to die for saying it.

listen good, i have been a dj since 2000 i dont need to be told how hard it is to get on the ladder. i know it's well f*cking hard, and you need all the help you can get. you obviously have to know what you are doing (like mixing etc), but you have to have help, you have to be in the know with the right people more than anything. if i were in her position i would take the chance, she has fame and is using it to her advantage. i cant blame her at all.

on the grid.

I don't think it or she is controversial at all. She was on Annie Mac's Sunday Night show and put in a good effort. I can see why the bosses want her, and BBC Radio these days seem to want to target household names - Fearne & Reggie, Vernon Kay, Dick & Dom. It's no different to Radio 2 who have gone for Alan Titmarsh, Paul O'Grady and Parkinson.

As you rightly say Gil, that's how the world of radio seems to work. It's not what you know, it's who you know, and an element of being in the right place at the right time. She would probably give Radio 1 a lot of publicity, I can see the front page of Radio 1 Online right now with some sort of 'bad girl' picture telling us she's joined the station.

I think the controversy lies in the way the station then treats those who tune in for other reasons - the die hard listeners. Radio 1 seem less about pleasing those who have always listened and more about scoring new listeners.

They forget about those that listened for new talent who have made their way up the schedule - Moyles, Mills, JK and Joel, and Mark and Lard. And prefer those who want to hear 'celebrities' get a show on the station.

They forget about playing old music in favour of constant new music - because they think we don't want to hear old stuff.

They forget about those who might want to go to Radio 1 events like the Big Weekend. And go to areas where their figures are failing, and give out tickets to new listeners to try and lure them in to their listenership as opposed to those who listen every day.

Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing radio station, but sometimes I think they take a step in the wrong direction.

That was almost a year ago, Trash Pussies split a few months after and she joined with two other friends to DJ under the name Black Rats.

Much as I'm not a Peaches fan, it remains to be seen if this is a step in the wrong direction. Stranger people have caught the public's imagination and even we die hards may get over the shock of the new and start to like her. After all Moyles is on the face of it someone I'd really dislike in real life but I love his show and listen every morning.

The BBC know that figures don't improve if when recruiting new listeners you also lose the old ones so I'd imagine she wont survive if she proves a turn off to established listeners.

One of the problems I have with people like Peaches getting shows is that it doesn't seem to me like they're particularly bothered about doing radio, they just want to "get themselves out there". Generally it makes better listening if the DJ really wants to be a DJ, like with Moyles and Mills, both of whom wanted a radio career from a young age. Of course, I'm making huge assumptions here - for all I know radio might be Peaches' dream, and she may turn out to be very good, I just wish Radio 1 would concentrate more on getting "Radio Talent" than celebrities.

At least she has a good pedigree... if shes anything like her mum Paula Yates, she might be quite a good presenter/DJ, and shes been presenting shows now for 4 or 5 years....and they do keep saying R1 is a youth station so it makes sense to employ people in the 18-25 years age bracket.

but it does seem annoying if shes got where she is because of her background rather that her talent!

    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
    • Zoe Ball is back on the breakfast show on Monday.
    • Just listening to matt and mollie at work and heard them say it's their second to last show on weekends
    • And Arielle mentioned in her Instagram post that her final early breakfast show is the 27th of June - the Thursday before Glastonbury
    • When Matt covered breakfast on 22nd April, he said their new show was starting in 10 weeks, so that’d be the 1st July.
    • Would love for it to be like the Summer Friday Thing that me and @DC were remisincing about recently. Lots of events going on that could easily form part of it.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/summer/cardiff/thursday/1.shtml
