Is Radio 1 turning its back on indie music?

Perhaps this is a reflection of what is popular in 2020, but I find myself hearing less indie music and more of rap, grime and dance music on Radio 1's daytime playlist. It could be an age factor, or even a sign of the music industry during the pandemic, but some of the music I'm hearing these days seems distinguishable to commercial radio at times. The launch of Radio 1 Dance hasn't convinced me that appears to be where they think there is a demand.

Has anyone noticed a change in the focus for daytime music recently?

I don't hear any great difference to the 2019 playlists - With the rise of TikTok however, don't see Indie getting much of a look-in ,,

Yes I fear it might be more that the other music is more in demand, but then I guess it's Radio 1's job to promote the music and make it popular rather than the other way around

Defiantly, All tough the odd indie classic may sneak into anthems. (Probably something like seven nation army)

I guess they’re just trying to keep up with what’s popular within their target demographic. I do think the indie show was a good wind down. Annie has her future sounds show- Jack has his future artists show. Surely they could have just merged that into Annie’s show and kept the indie show as it was?

I feel the same about the bits I hear from Radio 1 now. It feels more and more like a carbon copy of 1xtra, years ago you could easily separate the two. Just the way the music scene is, rock and indie with young people seems less relevant compared to the 90s and 00s youth. Coupled with the fact that we don't have the big indie/rock bands we had way back. There was a time where through the 00's you had Foo Fighters/Linkin Park/Blink 182/White Stripes/My Chemical Romance/Friendly Fires/Kings Of Leon/Arctic Monkeys... being hammered for weeks on the A list. Foo Fighters have just released a new tune last week, if it gets any higher than Radio 1's B list for more than 2 weeks I'll be surprised. I hear 1xtra playing house music now, when launched in 2002 that was unthinkable. It was garage, hip hop, early grime and r&b back then.

As far as indie and bands during mainstream(ish) hours, has Zane Lowe been truly replaced? Felt like he almost single-handedly pushed the Arctic Monkey's into the big time in late 2005 with no only the support he gave them, but the influence he had on getting them onto heavy rotation on the Radio 1 playlist.

Radio 1 dance feels like it has good intentions with room to grow, Radio 1 have been at it with dance since the very early 90's. It's a chance for them to run some old archive Jules/Rampling/Pete Tong/Carl Cox Fabio & Grooverider shows from the 90's and 2000's overnight, and keep it more modern in the day.

on the grid.

Well said, would be nice of them to air some classic dance recordings from Pete Jules etc. Maybe just some classic mixes or interviews to fill an hour or two.
Seems a waste to use content you’ve already heard in the week on the main station when they must have years worth of classic shows recorded.

I wonder if they would

eg would they use Jam or Danny dance anthems shows?

Dave Pearce too when he did it on Sunday nights. But I imagine it's pointless using run of the mill shows all the time, they may as well dig out live broadcasts.

Classic Essential mixes too could be one to use. I know you can more or less get every single one online. But some from the 90's are poor quality, Radio 1 Dance could get the original dat tapes and play them out digitised. The BBC has never made good, proper use of it's archive with a lot of things, it's a chance to do that.

on the grid.

They are missing a trick - they could run hours of Dave Pearce Dance anthems shows too

Replying now in April 2021, I think that Radio 1 isn't turning its back on Indie Music completely - but it is merely reflecting the musical landscape of the youth at this time. In the past week the music has been somewhat subdued, but in general there is less of a focus on Indie music and more on genres such as Pop/Dance and Hip-Hop. This next bit might be a disappointment to some, but recently I felt that TikTok had more of an influence in shaping the current Radio 1 playlist. That may have been instrumental in the lack of Indie Music in the playlist.

When I saw this thread originally pop up in November, I would have agreed with the question - it was quite a shock to hear Clara Amfo announce in a 20 second ramp that she would be playing new music from the Foo Fighters!

However now, we have new music from The Snuts. Alfie Templeman has recently got airplay. Twenty One Pilots returned with new music last week - Jack Saunders played it first. Even YUNGBLUD hosted an episode of The Indie Show last night and he played some of his favourite indie tracks on his show.

Therefore - not completely turning its back on Indie Music. A few more guitars here and there wouldn't go amiss though.

    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
    • They knew Roman wanted to leave early last year but wasn't officially announced but he gave them time to sort replacement. Found and offered Jordan a deal in June or July and needed time to get Jordan out of Contract at bbc and roman to do notice  Jordan had dinner with Katie Vick and Arielle to ask advice and all said he should go.
    • And they told Radio 4’s Feedback that it was an ‘experiment’ to ‘look at the best way to serve young listeners’ but reaffirmed that 280 hours commitment.
    • I doubt he wanted to go to Global if a slot before he found out kemp was leaving.
    • We're hoping to get some answers in the coming weeks
    • From what he's saying on the Pod he's been trying to get out of r1 for a while. Looks like he needed to wait for a show on global to be available. Jordan had bbq last summer with most of thr global execs and he's referenced the deal was in place then. Obviously the hold up was r1 being stubborn
    • All seems to be back to normal this morning.
    • Indeed and Jordan was already friends with Sian Welby, Will Manning and Jimmy Hill.
    • It's great to see those friendships still thriving. I think the days of Radio 1 DJs and Capital DJs being unable to co-exist is long over. You used to either be firmly BBC or commercial, and you don't get the sense that's the case anymore.
    • Maia Beth will be presenting the Radio 1 Happy shows from the 27th April replacing Katie.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ydkr
    • Vick and Jordan together on Insta (with Ariel’s) in Ibiza. You do imagine Jordan’s ex colleagues have a very different attitude to him than management. Comments on Help! And very subtle comments on Capital Breakfast suggest Jordan was frustrated with Radio 1 / BBC management.
    • I can name quite a few people on this forum who would be better presenters than Danny.
