Newsbeat was a total disaster today actually - it was abandoned and started again at 1pm.

Even at 1PM it was still a shambles, it’s as if Nesta couldn’t hear anything in his headphones. You can hear him tapping the mic and saying 1,2 over the start of a clip... oops!

Trying to work out what happened. 1Xtra seemed to get some element of the news at 12:45 which cut away to music after the Thomas Cook report. The online schedules show Newsbeat at 13:00 but the recording starts at 12:45 (causing initial confusion when trying to piece this together!).

My theory is that at 12:45 both R1 and 1Xtra were due to fade up Newsbeat as usual. Radio 1's feed from Newsbeat failed (as they were on an OB) but it went out fine on 1X.

Nesta McGregor could hear the output of R1 (which didn't have him faded up) and not 1Xtra so he kept repeating his opening line assuming no-one could hear him.  1Xtra got the word to cut away from Newsbeat after the Thomas Cook report and re-join at 13:00 instead along with Radio 1.

2 mess ups today on Newsbeat...

  • 8:30 this morning on R1 Breakfast with the headline bed 3 times.
  • 2:30 this afternoon on Scott’s show when Steve Holden wasn’t ready...Scott and Chris were trying to get to the bottom of what happened and I’m not actually sure what went wrong here.

After the mess up on 25th August and today’s errors, it got me thinking. Since Chris Smith left last month, has there been some changes behind the scenes as to who does what in Newsbeat? Things have gone from smooth to bumpy since then.

To be fair, it was nothing to do with Steve Holden. If you listen back to that bulletin on 1Xtra, he was there and did the news as normal. It was the R1 outside broadcast technical team that clearly messed up the link back to the Newsbeat studio in London.

Oh right. I didn’t think Newsbeat was on Asian Network too!
interesting.

Anyway, here’s a question that’s been in my head for a while now that I’ve been willing to ask:

Who thinks it’s time for a new Newsbeat package?

They’re not! I think it’s changed to better pool resources over the outbreak.

that same across all BBC news at the moment, radio 5live and radio 2 are simulcasting their hourly news as well.

I don't think it's time for a complete new one as I think this and the one previous are the best in a while, but I feel a slight refresh is required!

Also on another note, is it me. are they now putting a highlight package 20-30 minutes before the main news beat.   I 've noticed over the last couple of days, or have I just missed before

    • Richie Anderson in for Rylan tomorrow.
    • Mylo and Rosie said at the end of their show today that they would also be on Early Breakfast on Thursday 24th July (even though the schedule still says Dean)
    • James is in for Dean from Monday 11th to Thursday 14th August. Dean is in for Greg from Monday 11th to Friday 15th August. Jaguar is in for Sarah on Friday 15th August.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Alyx on Sunday 13th July.
    • Conor Knight & Lauren Layfield are in for Matt & Mollie on Monday 14th July.  Matt is solo on Tuesday 15th July.  Jerry is in for Mollie between Wednesday 16th & Thursday 24th July.  Maia Beth is covering Future Pop on Wednesday 16th & Wednesday 23rd July. On Sunday 27th July the Chillest Show is reduced to an hour, and 20.00-21.00 is a BBC Proms special with JADE. On Thursday 31st July 18.00-20.00 in place of Jack's show it's the Dance Party Warm-Up with Danny Howard (ahead of the Ibiza weekend).
    • Dean McCullough in for Greg w/c 4th August. James Cusack on EB.
    • Well looks like Mollie is off all month now so presumably a personal matter.
    • Intrigued why Matt & Mollie aren't presenting breakfast on Monday, with James in for them instead (which has happened before).. or even James given a chance to present the breakfast show?
    • Sam & Danni seem to be down for Breakfast on Monday. James Cusack on Going Home. That’s another new name in the list of “people who have hosted Going Home in 2025”.
    • Wednesday, surely? But this is another mess, as this weeks Summer press release said it’ll be Sam & Danni no Jamie from the 28th - so it’s actually a whole week earlier!
    • Jamie Laing’s last show before his summer break will be on Wednesday 16th July.
    • I worked out once Scott spent 3 months of a year off his own slot in the Moyles days and more like 4 in Grimmys days, six weeks of his own holiday and projects, six covering Grimmy plus some ad hoc days
    • Back on topic, I think there's quite a few of the current Radio 1 presenters who would be able to adapt to Radio 2's style in the future. It's more of question of how many of them will actually end up there. With much of R2's line up changed over the past couple of years, it's quite possible we won't see much movement there, and R2 management might even decide to look elsewhere to bring in new presenters in future.
    • With OJ covering on bank holidays. She is the best person for the job however... they're going to end up with a situation like Scott covering R1 breakfast back in the day, where she spends quite a bit of time off her own slot covering Breakfast, plus her own holiday and other commitments. She's been filming for something recently which has meant she's been off several days a week since May. She was off last week, on breakfast this week, OJ is on Mon/Tues next week, then She's off the following two weeks.
    • Looking back at this I would say now that Sara is the main cover - I think she has been reestablished as it now
