Who Would You Want As New Breakfast Person?

Huge question, and something that has been debated alot in the last few months. Shall we list some contenders....

Moyles to stay.

Fearne Cotton.

Greg James.

Scott Mills.

Reggie Yates.

Nick Grimshaw.

Vernon Kay.

Sara Cox.

Annie Mac.

Dev.

A combination of any 2 of the above (Its very local radio, but who knows...)

An 'outsider'. (By this I mean someone from another station or some other form of media)

I don't think anyone else at the station could be considered. I think if Radio 1 are wanting to aim to younger audiences, that would rule out Kay, Coxy, Moyles staying and maybe even Scott (despite him been more than qualified).

I think that Greg James stands a huge chance. He is entertaining and his afternoon show is appears to be doing well.

It doesn't matter, initially. Whoever takes over directly post-Moyles won't last too long as the initial disappearance of listeners will force Radio 1 to move someone new in. Mills could be a caretaker presenter (ie., someone who knows they're taking over for a short time and then moving on themselves) whilst they prep someone new into the role.

Long-term, Greg James is a radio guy and it'd make sense for him to get the spot, but I think it's too soon for him. I'd much rather let him swim on drive-time for a couple of years to continue finding his mainstream voice, and then move him into the role. An outside shot, but someone who should be considered a future prospect in the big slots, is Reggie Yates. He could be something really special in the daytime, particularly in the Fearne or Greg role. Vernon is talented, but I don't think he'd want to do it full-time. Fearne, no. Just, no. Sara Cox would be in Scott territory - short term placeholder until someone else is found. Grimshaw? Ugh.

They could bring a completely new talent into the station, but that seems a little unfair. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a Jack Whitehall-type with a show in a few years. But not to replace Moyles. They're really in a pickle with Chris because he's so far and away better than everyone on the station at what he does and no one can touch it, which is going to create huge problems when he's gone because no one will have the balls to fight for the style of show he presents and all those listeners who enjoy that style are going to be left without.

This is more or less exactly what I said a couple of weeks ago, but Viv saw me as... what was it again.... childish? Pathetic? Something like that. But I am in that catagory of people you list Mitchell

Edit: She told me to grow up

Nick and Annie? Totally different direction. They are really funny together, get on well, and have a passion for music. Ideal in my books...

Other than that Scott if he can get a team, i.e. a Chappers style news or sport presenter and a quieter news girl.

Or scott and greg, i don't think Greg is quite ready for it on his own yet, so in a year or so Greg would go solo. Or Gregory starts with a team.

I don't think the early morning starts would fit very well with Annie's DJing. Interesting thought though. I remember enjoying Zane on breakfast as a one-off. Would be quite a move to put more of a music slant on breakfast.

I do feel that breakfast needs to have a strong identity compared to the rest of the daytime output. As people have already said, this is the strength of Moyles. I can't help but feel the whole daytime schedule becomes quite generic the moment he leaves.

I obviously don't know but would hope R1 would have the sense not to do that. They know better than anyone that the person / people who fill Moyles role has huge boots to fill and listeners will go down for at the minimum the first 3 quarters. I would think they would forsee this and therefore give Moyles replacement a bit of time.

Long-term, Greg James is a radio guy and it'd make sense for him to get the spot, but I think it's too soon for him. I'd much rather let him swim on drive-time for a couple of years to continue finding his mainstream voice, and then move him into the role.

I agree entirely. I think the next move for Greg should be drive, and I would hope boxxes would give him more freedom to be a little more outlandish in his style. Greg is naturally funny on the radio, and I think if he goes back to a more early breakfast style with more humour he could build on this and in my view be very successful on breakfast, but not yet.

With regards to new talent if they did it would be someone who was bought in from elsewhere in the BBC, ala Fearne, Reggie, Matt Edmonson. The BBC are trying to give off the image that they are not looking in the commercial sector anymore which would rule out similar style signings to JK and Joel and Zane Lowe, who came from the commercial sector. Whether this is actually the BBC's policy on the issue remains to be seen though it highly looks like it if you look at recent signings such as Tom, Matt, Fearne, Reggie, Dev, Greg James - they've all either worked for the BBC before, come from within the BBC and in Greg's case straight from student radio, though his case is a rare exceptional one based on his huge talent.

Nick and Annie? Totally different direction. They are really funny together, get on well, and have a passion for music. Ideal in my books...

Not my taste or style at all but I belive a real possibility. I wouldn't listen to it, infact it would probably put me off R1 as a whole, but those two have a good fan base behind them and I believe those two getting breakfast is a possibility, it would probably see a large change in style to the station, possibly with the likes of Tom Deacon and Matt Edmonson bought furthur in to the line up.

Other than that Scott if he can get a team, i.e. a Chappers style news or sport presenter and a quieter news girl.

Or scott and greg, i don't think Greg is quite ready for it on his own yet, so in a year or so Greg would go solo. Or Gregory starts with a team.

If Scott still had Chappers with him I think you'd have a ready made breakfast replacement team. As much as I enjoy Scott's current show, I think if he were to go to breakfast he'd need to step it up that one notch and I think a new Chappers could be the way to do this. Easier said than done.

Dave and Dom are both freelance so they'll leave. Aled might become an EP and just do the surgery. If you have the same team it just feels like a cover....

I expect Dave will follow Chris to his next project / station. There's a large chance Dom would follow but if not I don't see him staying on Newsbeat, more likely to read the news for a large commercial station or somewhere like 5Live or BBC London. Possibly even Radio 2. Dom is a great journalist who is more than capable of doing serious (and really good) news interviews. The chance to do something like that again may tempt out his journalistic roots.

Moyles contract will be until July/August im guessing as that is when he signed a 1 year extension, and Capitals UK network expansion is looming and they will want a big anchor for breakfast like Moyles. As with previous Breakfast switch overs they will prob put in a "steady pair of hands" to handle the handover for a few months until Jan and then start with a new permanent presenter in January. I can see this steady pair of hands being Scott, and Greg moving to drive.

Although Scott is my favourite DJ at the station, I hope he doesn't move to Breakfast as he isn't really anything new and I think that is what will be needed to fill the gap left by Moyles. We hear Mills on Breakfast enough already so get what the format will be.

I think whoever this new person is Scott should then move to afternoons and Greg take on Drive. This frees Scott up to do more things at the station, take a different direction with his show and also puts the Chart under his remit too which he already does quite alot.

Contenders for Breakfast - Grimmy has to be the favourite who would also be my first choice and R1 seem to be grooming him for big things and his evening show is actually a must listen now (or even a Annie & Nick combo might be considered as the station direction becomes apparent), Reggie, or even Fearne to be honest based on her apparent popularity in the R1 board room. However outsiders at the station - Huw Stephens has a big following and I know he has introducing comitmnets but what better platform to expose introducing, Matt Edmondson and possibly Zane if he feels its a good move.

Other BBC stations - Lauren Laverne, Ronnie Herrel, Mista Jam, Shaun Keaveny and Richard Bacon is a bit Moyles Esque! Or how about Tom Ravenscroft at the station - that would be a big signing and his 6music show is really good - I can see him being snapped up soon!

Interesting though that William Hill have Russel Brand at 25/1 to take over from Chris! Comedy Dave is also at 25/1 at Aled is 100/1.

I Think Shaun Keaveny is fantastic. Also on 6Music Huey Morgan has been very good covering for Lauren but probably wouldn't be appropiate for breakfast. But do Radio 1 take people from other BBC stations bar 1xtra

I would prefer Huw to get Grimmy's evening show where he gets to choose the music as I do love it when he covers for Zane.

There isn't much love for Dev but I thought he was quite good covering Greg last week so he'll surely be in line for a move. (not to breakfast though)

However you can't look past Greg surely from Radio 1 but a move to Drive does seem sensible.

Without question, Scott. He has shone more and more on brekkie. Is very funny, entertaining, and copes v. well with guests. Whether he would want these early rises though on an on-going basis is questionable.

Plus, one final comment, he is more corporate than Moyles, less confrontational, and less likely to cross the line, which, I believe would suit the BBC.

I reckon Grimmy.

Scott has just missed the opportunity, hes a similar age to Moyles and just not as good so there is no reason to put him on the breakfast slot now.

Greg is ideal for drive time. He's slightly grown on me, his show is about listenable nowadays but he's not right for breakfast - features are a bit lame and his interactions with guests is a bit cliché or awkward.

Grimmy is young, well in touch with radio 1's new target audience age group and passionate about music. He's also extremely quick witted, funny and has the best interaction with his guests i've heard on the station (excluding some of Moyles interviews).

Grimmy!! Pul-lease.

I don't agree that Scott has missed an opportunity. He's only a young man, well in touch with the target range of listeners. He has a natural ability to be childish, and I don't think we will see a move away from that for some time in the future.

I can't believe Grimmy is even on anyone's radar.

Annie has always said she doesn't want to do the breakfast show. So I'd say Nick Grimshaw or even, as oli said, Shaun Keaveny from 6Music would be good. But preferably George Lamb, but that'll never happen. Sara Cox as a regular stand-in, I doubt she'd be offered the job (apart from on a caretaker basis), or want the job for that matter.

I was thinking Sara might get a 2nd chance...

Viv and other Grimmy and Annie doubters have you listened to their show on Sunday nights? Brilliant radio.

Has Annie ever said she wouldn't do brekkie with Grimmy?

I'll try and find a link to the interview. It was with a teenage girl's magazine I think (Mizz or something). But she basically said she's not a fan of breakfast radio and wouldn't be able to deal with the early mornings. And that she's primarily a DJ rather than a mainstream radio presenter. Basically breakfast isn't for her.

The best link I could find: http://www.metro.co.uk/showbiz/interviews/77699-60-seconds-annie-mac#ixzz13s4gy1my

Are you hoping to get the breakfast show? Isn’t that the goal for all Radio 1 DJs?

No. I don’t like getting up in the morning. I don’t listen to the breakfast show because I’m in bed. I always want to have my Friday night specialist shows. I’m lucky to be able to choose what I want to play – to do that for ever would be amazing.

is this what your reading material is these days!! ha ha !! :hahaha:

I listened to Grimmy once Tom, and switched off, vowing never to return. But I may give his slot a second chance.

Who doesn't ;) Just a guilty pleasure

A link to the interview was posted on another forum, so apart from my casual browsing in WHSmiths, no I don't read teenage girl's magazines :P

    • They seem to be using James more for cover now makes me think it will be him getting weekends eitjer breakfast or 1 till 4
    • Yep am very much Capital Breakfast now. Jordan, Chris and Sian are a great trio and it's got that feel of the old shows Jordan and Chris used to do on Radio 1. It doesn't take itself too seriously but is packed full of content and slick. With Greg he's great but 6 years in you've probably heard it all before plus frankly I can sit through the Capital Playlist a lot more easily than the Radio 1 playlist (where some of the inclusions and omissions can be quite baffling at times). Plus after things like the Oscars or Met Gala or if there's a particularly big TV show or film or popstar then Greg won't half wang on about it at times. I guess it's partly to be expected with it being a Breakfast show on a young station but it can feel very London bubble and get tired.
    • Ore Olukoga is in for Arielle on Tuesday 14th May. James Cusack is in for Danny Beard on Saturday 1st June. James Cusack is in for Nat on Sunday 2nd June.
    • I honestly never thought in a million years I’d move from Radio 1 to be a regular Capital breakfast show listener. But it’s got pretty much everything I want - 3 really genuine, entertaining mates having a laugh, playing silly games and it all sounds great. I became a big fan of Chris from his days with Scott, became a Jordan fan on Going Home, and Sian Welby is newer to me but is loads of fun too.  It’s great and I’ve shocked myself by transferring my listening at breakfast. For me Greg’s show now feels very tired and it’s time for something new. But with Jordan gone that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Greg’s had a great run and I’m a fan - but there’s no new ideas now. I still listen to Radio 1 at other times - but this show feels like very serious competition for Greg.
    • They have built four new studios to increase capacity, alongside the existing six.  Bearing in mind that some of the output of R1, 1X, R2 & 6M comes from elsewhere, and Asian Network is gradually moving all output to Birmingham, this should be enough!
    • How do they manage to cater for 6Music and Radio 2 on that floor? Did they adapt it?
    • I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!
    • A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.
    • He must be in his element. At Eurovision and a Gold award!
    • I really like Rylan, and as much of a fun idea it would be to have Scott and Rylan together, I think Rylan is too much of a main character.  Scott needs a side-kick rather than a full on co-host I think. That’s why he and Chris worked so well, Scott steered the show, and Chris was the perfect person to have alongside him.    I don’t religiously listen to Rylan’s show, but when I do catch it, it’s perfect weekend energy. He has a very warm presenting style too, but something makes me think he and Scott together every day would be a bit too much.
    • So pleased for Scott on his best entertainment show win. As much as I miss his R1 style, he clearly puts so much into his shows, well deserved and it’s a big two fingers up to all the abuse he has had since joining R2
    • There are a lot that share your sentiments. People have made comparisons to the different takes to Ukraine.
    • It's a big 'No' from me (Israel-Palestine). No further comments.
    • A joke about pirates: ‘but we’re not jumping ship, like someone else’
    • I felt it was much better with the staging and everything.  I still cannot warm to his voice but he's a very good performer. Ireland was everything though.
