Colin: Radio 1's playlist didn't connect with my show

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/tv-radio/why-5-live-thinks-colin-murray-is-the-man-for-the-new-season-1766424.html

He talks about his new book, working at 5Live, the future at possibly Radio 2 and the playlist at Radio 1.

Murray's departure from Radio 1, where he hosted a specialist evening show, was unusual in that he quit the station. He left partly because of his age. "I never wanted to be greying or balding or out of touch when I left Radio 1, and I felt I left when I was more relevant and more in touch with my listeners than ever, and that was important because it is meant to be a youth station – that's its remit."

Though he has "the deepest respect" for the network which gave him his break, he also had issues with Radio 1's music policy. "I wasn't necessarily overwhelmed at the connection between what I was doing at night-time with new music and it translating into the daytime," he says.

"It was frustrating. For example, we campaigned to get Malcolm Middleton's 'We're All Going to Die' to the Christmas No 1, and that didn't get on the playlist. That was a big thing for me. It was no sacrifice, but because it didn't really fit the sound that they wanted, it didn't go on. If GMTV are happy to play it and have me on as a guest, I think it can go on a playlist at Radio 1."

His frustrations "come from having a love of the station", but he complains that Radio 1 does not use its influence more imaginatively. "It would have been nice to see records come through on the playlist when we were playing them and not when they were on adverts later on. Like Born Ruffians, 10 months after I played it, it goes on the playlist. Bat for Lashes, who we had in for a session and played for months, only went on the playlist after a Mercury [Prize] nomination. That's other people telling Radio 1 what they should be playing."

Yes I agree with his comments. Radio 1 is supposed to be about new music and yet we hardly ever see the music translating from the new music shows to the playlist without something else dictating what goes on there. There's some great stuff on evenings that would easily fit on to the playlist and make Radio 1 stand out compared to other stations but it doesn't happen. Instead we hear the same bands day in and day out that you can hear on Heart or Kiss.

I really liked that Marina and the Diamonds track but if it's going to end up on the playlist (despite Huw playing it months ago) it would have to either appear in an advert, she would have to be hounded by a big record producer or a DJ would have to take the risk of making it their Record of the Week.

Yet Radio 1 is a new music station but 90% of the playlist is bands that aren't new music. Colin is right there should be more risk taken with playing out INMWT material during the day and it shouldn't be just because it's in a car advert.

The daytime DJs still have to pick their track of the week off the playlist, then again I'm sure Whiley would have a little word if she found something she really wanted to play.

"Music is the lowest common denominator of radio stations" the way of diffiretiating Radio 1 from commercial radio shouldn't only be that the BBC dont play adverts, its got to be about having the right "talent" and "personalities" and push the boundaries a little with music. One song completely new every five wont hurt anyone.

I completely agree with Colin- that's one of my main gripes about R1, that it really doesn't play enough new music on daytime. It's far too safe and will stick with artists whose previous singles/albums they've played. On the other hand it also seems to purposely ignore some releases- when a band has a new single out, you'll often hear them start to play a previous 'hit' instead of the current one, for example they did this with Franz Ferdinand's last one. It's too safe- shake it up and stop playing so much cheesy dance-lite!

I still haven't forgiven them for not playing any of the singles from Roisin Murphy's Overpowered album- she would've fitted in fine on daytime but they completely blanked her. Tsk.

How long have they been doing an 'In New Music We Trust' feature just before the end of Jo's show. Haven't heard them do it before but they've got a jingle especially for it and are playing out tracks from the evening show. It might be an old feature but just seemed coincidental after these reports they're doing this.

There should be at least 3 new music slots on the playlist...

1 for Zane to fill with something from his show.

1 for Nick (which would have been Colin's) for something from his show.

And then 1 for the Specialists who have a week each on a rota.

If the daytime listeners like it it can then stay on the playlist in one of the other slots, as 3 more new songs are added in. It doesn't need to be like the weekend anthem or a record of the week or anything with all the jingles and garnishes - they don't even need to say anything about it.

It needn't be that formal. There just needs to be a general change of attitude where songs are put on the playlist on merit rather than on the name of the artist whose track it is.

    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
