Well it doesn't *actually* mean that; multiculturalism covers the social make-up of diversity within society, not how accepted it is within it. But I agree that there isn't a utopian state of society in this country, nor will there ever be.

exactly, the defining point of "multi-cultural society means EVERYONE accepts everyone else's opinions, beliefs, values & works together" is that a society isn't truly a multi-cultural society until those criteria are met.

No it doesn't. Multiculturalism, as I said a few posts back, is "the theory of racial, cultural and ethnic diversity that applies to the demographic make-up". The make-up has nothing to do with how they are received or treated. The fact is that we are multi-cultural due to how many differing cultures are present within our society. It's pretty black and white on that front. And that's why the people who argue that multiculturalism is dead don't even touch on the idea of everyone accepting everyone else's ideas; they base their argument on is being dead because of the connotation, not the meaning.

Plus, there's more to defining multi-culture than the idea that there's some racists somewhere, decrying the Asians and the Polish. Politically, we are multi-cultured because we've made strides to officially accept it into our laws and policies. If multi-cultural societies didn't exist, there would be no need for the term, nor any need to restructure our laws and policies and there wouldn't be age-old arguments going on about it for years upon years because there would be nothing to argue over.

The vocal minority do not make us any less multi-cultural. A football team with a player who doesn't like his teammates and supports the opposing team is still a football team; just not a perfect one.

Similarly, we are a multi-cultural society - just not a particularly great one (although we're not particularly bad, either).

What am I going to do to change that? St. Georges Day doesn't mean anything to me anyway, regardless of the right-wing or not. All I feel is that their efforts of trying to make something of it are misguided and ultimately off-putting to people like myself and only serve to push us from not caring towards the dangerous area of resentment.

I assume this is directed at me, in which case, LOL! I've never once even insinuated that you might be a racist. For all I know, you could be. I don't know one way or the other and certainly would prefer to assume that you are a right-minded person who is accepting of all cultures and races, instead of pointing fingers.

Nor do I think that driving through an "Asian area" with an England flag on your car is racist. I've seen houses owned by Asian families with an English flag hanging from the window. So certainly not.

Yet, I can't help but shake off my psychology knowledge, though, when thinking that you raised such a question without a hint of provocation in such an act of defensiveness.

you are suggesting that it has been taken over by the right wing, thus people should be afraid to celebrate St. Georges Day as they could be considered racist by doing so & used my patriotism as a Englishman as a example of what may be considered racist by those who concur with the above quote.

that explains why the United Kingdom is trying to split up with Scotland & Wales wanting to become independent then, the term multiculturalism it quite broad & reading the wiki one it seems to be a more political version, it even says itself that it is a theory.

there are many different cultures in the UK & they don't all get along & how do you suggest

we make it open to everyone in such a multi-cultural society

i want to celebrate being English on Saint Georges Day, in the same way that a Welshman want to celebrate being Welsh on Saint David's Day or a Scotsman wants to celebrate being Scottish on Saint Andrew's Day, why can't i do this in our multi-cultural society ?

how this ever got this far is beyond me, in the other forums that had a Saint Georges Day thread 99% of the posts were

Anyway St George is the patron saint of England not the english ... if people are in england they should celebrate it...
