Started a 'whats occurring' on my Uni Radio Show!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm new around these parts, but been listening and a fan of Mills since - ages.

I've not been doing student radio long, but this week I started my own rip off of 'oh! what's occurring!' - with my own mix of music, jingles and my own Simple Street town interviews

We had a lot of fun, and I'd like to know what you all think, constructive help would be good :P

Well I can't imagine Scott's lawyers will be on any time soon, but rather than student radio, it reminds me of a creepy local radio rip-off. I think for someone in student radio though it should be a compliment ;)

thanks guys. in the whole show (theres a whole podcast) at the start i did full explain it was a total rip of the Scott Mills Radio Show game. :D and in the blurb on the youtube clip, i give him full credit :)

Any ideas for next weeks?

PS: and thanks Jono hehehe

Maybe try another street to answer your questions, might end up with some interesting results :). Just think about what would make some more stranger questions, to shake it up a bit

I'm all for imitation to a degree as all student presenters do it. Just be careful not to be TOO Scott Mills, because it extended beyond the segment. Your words, some of the delivery, and obviously the game itself, all screamed Scott even though you actually sounded like a younger Chappers at times.

Gotta admit though, the production is fantastic for a student station. It's rare to hear student radio *sound* that good.

Thanks for that, and I will keep it in mind. It is, however, how I talk (and am) in real life and if I hadn't been myself, believe me Janice and the others would have soon told me so!!! Thanks for the compliments on the production too, I am trying hard to raise the profile of the station.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but everyone - even the likes of Moyles, Mills and Stern - are subconsciously different on the radio to how they are in real life because that's generally what a microphone and the power of having a show does to people. And usually, people only see radio etiquette and style as what they're used to hearing the most, which is what comes out when you perform (and that's what every radio personality does at heart - that's why it's a THEATRE of the mind). So whether you notice or not, you're bringing out clear influences that you look up to and a presenter should be at least fairly conscious of not wanting to sound too much like a direct copy.

It's nothing new - I have the same issue myself. I will subconscious repeat lines from my heroes (people likes Howard Stern, Stewart Lee, etc) without realising it and it's not until I listen back that I pick up on it and try in future to cut out certain traits I may have that bring on that comparison.

The only other suggestion I have - and please don't take these as gospel because I'm just a student like you are, just merely my opinion that you can take or leave - is learning to replace err's and umm's with silence. People worry too much about dead air but "ummmm..." sounds far worse. You're smartly using backing beds, so that completely rectifies the problem of total silence.

Other than that, was great. And really, like I said, it's the best student-produced show of any kind that I've heard in the longest time - if ever. Really smooth and you definitely have endless potential to become something really good in the commercial world.

Well, i called, i fumbled the number in my phone like 4 times, i thought oh bugger no chance. Producer Dan answered and said I was the only one to call up! lol

Really? They usually have a few people call... thats shocking... one phone call...

I didn't call because the few times I've called they've said Ill be put on air then ran out of time (free for all friday)

    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
    • Zoe Ball is back on the breakfast show on Monday.
    • Just listening to matt and mollie at work and heard them say it's their second to last show on weekends
    • And Arielle mentioned in her Instagram post that her final early breakfast show is the 27th of June - the Thursday before Glastonbury
    • When Matt covered breakfast on 22nd April, he said their new show was starting in 10 weeks, so that’d be the 1st July.
    • Would love for it to be like the Summer Friday Thing that me and @DC were remisincing about recently. Lots of events going on that could easily form part of it.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/summer/cardiff/thursday/1.shtml
    • I'm guessing there is also a stack of weekend events like Glastonbury
    • I think more likely it'll just be a temp presenter for weekends 1-4 to give Matt & Mollie time off, plus time to plan and pilot the new show.
    • Yeah I don’t think they’ll be anything that drastic - maybe a week or 2 of cover on early breakfast etc, but maybe just having that weekend afternoon slot covered over the summer means they can put someone on from September who maybe isn’t available until then?
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
    • I wouldn't be surprised if they do this around June time: 05.00 Ore Olukoga 07.00 Greg James 10.30 RMC 14.00 VKJ  That'll probably happen (for my guess) from the 17th June. And for weekends: 07:00 Sam & Danni 11:00 Gregor Davidson 15:00 Charlie Hedges Maybe Fridays aswell: 07:00 Greg James 11:00 Gregor Davidson 14:30 Jack Saunders
    • The Summer on Radio 1 thing makes me wonder whether they might be doing something similar to last year again where they have a temporary schedule over the summer before introducing changes in September - maybe the new host won’t start until after the summer?
