Hello Jono, three questions to you young man.

1) Where have you applied to study?

2) What do you want to study?

3) Do they have a decent student radio station and/ or student newspaper?

:)

The best of luck, UCAS are fine.

De Montfort University - Radio Production

University of Glamorgan - Radio

The University of Sunderland - Media Production (TV and Radio)

Nottingham Trent University - Broadcast Journalism

University of East Anglia - Society, Culture and Media

(It's the closest university, so it'd be nice to go somewhere local)

It gets a bit beyond the joke when you actually check it on a Sunday. Especially as no fool will be working through UCAS applications on that day.

You'd be surprised... I got a feedback sheet back about an essay the other day, it is signed and dated as having been marked on 01/01/2008. Academics work at funny times, although maybe that's why the comments are unreadable.

Haha, Bristol rejected me quite quickly in my case. B*stards.

As did UMIST to me but thankfully Leeds Uni accepted me but took an age to do it.

Good luck with your choices, our tutor allowed us to see what he'd written reference wise but its mainly your personal statment that its based on apart from results obviously.

I also applied to Bristol (like 2 or 3 years ago now) but I really wanted to go to RHUL, Bristol was too close to home.

They accepted me on both courses I had applied for and even matched my predicted grades. Was a bit surreal.

But they seemed really pompous and I really had fallen in love with RHUL by this point, so they got declined.

My mum wanted me to apply for Bristol, she was making such a big fuss about everything else so I just put it down. My entire tutor group got rejected, although one of my friends did get accepted but decided not to go there. People say it's full of posh people, but I also hear that they reject people from private schools these days.

My tutor said that they don't care about their undergraduates, only their own research, and their teaching is rubbish and there's no module choices on my course there. She might be slightly biased, or trying to make us feel better about being rejected.

I wish my parents interfered a bit with my UCAS. They have no clue and presume it's just a case of if you apply you're in.

My sister is now in the position where I am as of August, so they can't just put a one-sided opinion that I'm lame and not doing much, as I'll be in the same boat as her.

Sure enough they still do though. "Oh your sister has an offer at Leeds and we're sure she'll get into Norwich art school".

Her response to me? "Oh well I can't imagine you'll get in anywhere, so it'll be straight to work for you as you're just a failure". Hmmph.

That's not very nice. I'm sure they don't mean to be discouraging, they probably think that in some way they're helping.

I had serious battles with my mum and in the end had to get half the teachers in the school to persuade her to let me do Geography. I guess it meant I sorted things out for myself, because she was using subversive tactics to make me go to open days for other subjects and stuff. Then she tried to interfere with my UCAS choices and in the end I just did them and told her afterwards. My dad is happy to let me do what I want to do (as long as it doesn't involve smoking) but my mum feels the need to interfere.

My mum told me I'd end up living in the gutter because no one would employ me with a geography degree. Proving her wrong is my motivation.

I didn't apply to university last year because they discouraged me from it. Ah well, we'll see what happens.

Their opinion is I do a newspaper column, this website and a bit of talking on local radio, which I was doing during sixth form. Everyone seems to take interest in what I'm doing, but because I've not taken on anything else since, and because I've got a proper job they see me as a failure.

"We expected big things, and you've not proved yourself."

They just seem to think everything works at the click of a finger. Truth is I miss a daily routine. I don't want to work somewhere where I'm not going to enjoy it. But I miss going to bed early, getting up early, and taking a bus or train journey somewhere. I'd love to do that at the Uni in Norwich. That's why I've applied to university, as a decent job seems years off.

My parents and especially my mum are never happy with what I do. I got B1s for my exams nd my mum was disappointed because they werent As. Ive constantly been told that Ill never become anything and will end up in a council house stacking shelves in ASDA for the rest of my life. Im just want to prove her wrong.

Yeah, I know what you mean Jono, my mum just assumes I can find a job just like that for the holidays with no problems. She's stopped me from working while I was at school and also during term time at uni, yet expects that there'll be a job just waiting for me when the holidays come round. The last 2 summers have proved that jobs aren't like that these days.

I almost got a flexible term time job working for the university, I was already working for them in the summer and last term, but when they actually interviewed me a second time they decided that they didn't want me. My housemate, who is the most lazy, unmotivated and uninspiring drip of a person (and hopefully doesn't read this site!) got the job and kept telling me about how annoying it is and how it's so much effort. I shouted at him and said angry words and now he doesn't talk to me about it.

Every time I apply for something and get an interview, I feel more let down when they reject me. I know it happens to everyone and I shouldn't feel so bad about myself because of it but it really does get to me. It's not exactly related to university, but it is about my parents and the expectations they have and it affects what I'm likely to end up doing when I graduate in under 18 months time.

I also know what you mean about jobs, I had so much trouble finding one over the summer that I just gave up in the end - why is it that it always seems to be the people who are far lazier, more unsociable and less competent than you who get all the jobs? (Not meaning to offend anyone on here, I'm sure you're all dynamic and motivated workers!!) Guess it all comes down to experience really, no matter how sh*t you were at your previous job(s) it's the experience that matters at the end of the day. Hmph.

I guess I'm quite lucky in that my parents have never put any real pressure on me as far as uni/getting a job is concerned, they just leave me to make my own decisions most of the time. But I would rather be in uni at the moment than working, however much I may complain about it sometimes, 'cos hopefully I'll end up with a worthwhile degree that'll get me a relatively interesting job.

So save the last dance

For me my love 'cause I

I see you as an angel freshly fallen from the sky...

    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
    • Zoe Ball is back on the breakfast show on Monday.
    • Just listening to matt and mollie at work and heard them say it's their second to last show on weekends
    • And Arielle mentioned in her Instagram post that her final early breakfast show is the 27th of June - the Thursday before Glastonbury
    • When Matt covered breakfast on 22nd April, he said their new show was starting in 10 weeks, so that’d be the 1st July.
    • Would love for it to be like the Summer Friday Thing that me and @DC were remisincing about recently. Lots of events going on that could easily form part of it.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/summer/cardiff/thursday/1.shtml
    • I'm guessing there is also a stack of weekend events like Glastonbury
    • I think more likely it'll just be a temp presenter for weekends 1-4 to give Matt & Mollie time off, plus time to plan and pilot the new show.
    • Yeah I don’t think they’ll be anything that drastic - maybe a week or 2 of cover on early breakfast etc, but maybe just having that weekend afternoon slot covered over the summer means they can put someone on from September who maybe isn’t available until then?
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
    • I wouldn't be surprised if they do this around June time: 05.00 Ore Olukoga 07.00 Greg James 10.30 RMC 14.00 VKJ  That'll probably happen (for my guess) from the 17th June. And for weekends: 07:00 Sam & Danni 11:00 Gregor Davidson 15:00 Charlie Hedges Maybe Fridays aswell: 07:00 Greg James 11:00 Gregor Davidson 14:30 Jack Saunders
