Missing West Yorkshire schoolgirl Shannon Matthews has been found alive, it has been reported.

West Yorkshire Police are yet to confirm that she has been found but said they were investigating reports the nine-year-old had been found.

She was last seen at Westmoor Junior School, Dewsbury on 19 February.

The force said the operation was the biggest missing person's case it had undertaken since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper.

New story!!

Missing West Yorkshire schoolgirl Shannon Matthews has been found alive, three weeks after going missing.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed the girl had been found concealed in the base of a divan bed in a house in Lidgate Gardens in Batley Carr.

Neighbours said police smashed their way in and emerged carrying Shannon who was last seen leaving Westmoor Junior School in Dewsbury on 19 February.

A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of abduction.

The young girl looked "quite calm" and officers confirmed that she was ok, the neighbours added.

Shannon's aunt Amanda Hyett said the schoolgirl's mother Karen Matthews had been driven away by police from the family home shortly before 1400 GMT.

Earlier this week mother-of-seven Mrs Matthews, 32, said she believed someone she knows had snatched her daughter to hurt her.

Mrs Matthews said: "She got abducted. That's all I can say."

It's good she's been found alive. I can't help but think though had her parents been middle-class doctors the media would've promoted her story to the front pages and headlines everyday for the last three weeks. When this news broke I couldn't even remember hearing about her going missing initially or who she was.

Shannon's mother has come in for a lot of stick from the press apparently, just as we all speculated would happen last year during the Madeline McCann saga had her parents been poor, or she had had only one.

I have to say I am starting to always tune to Sky News now for breaking news. BBC News is becoming unreliable and slow. Even when they do a break story first they appear to get the information wrong.

Although I did see one of Sky's reporters burst into the house of the parents to try and get a scoop or find someone to interview. That was rather cringey.

I can't help wondering whether there was a hoax behind this though. Shannon's mother knew she was alive and said it up till the last day. Maybe it's just optimism, but it seemed odd that we then hear this.

I just laughed when i heard - Found in a draw under a bed.

Missing people seem to be hiding in such obvious places these days, with the man behind the wardrobe and Shannon under a bed. Maybe the hunt for Madeleine should check behind the apartment curtains?

I reckon it'll be quite a while before they actually detangle why she was taken and what the deal is with her family. They seem like some strange people. It is odd that her mother suddenly decided a couple of days ago that she'd been taken by someone who knew her to get at her, suggests there were some serious family issues.

It's good that a missing kid has been found alive though.

  • 4 weeks later...

"Shannon vanished on 19 February and was found 24 days later after one of the largest missing person hunt's West Yorkshire Police had ever conducted."

Arghhh the BBC should know better than to misuse apostrophes!

It doesn't look like she'll be getting her kids back any time soon. The case gets more complex by the day.

I think from day one we were aware it wasn't going to be a straight forward 'nasty man on your street' abduction. Everyone was quick to point the finger at the family for knocking, and then it we were told it was some man that just happened to live close to the grandparents and rumours died down.

Don't think you're too psychic there Tamba...

    • I would be pretty confident that if they keep avoiding using James Cusack on that slot over the next few weeks, then it will probably be him that gets the show permanently!
    • That’s two names who probably won’t be doing that slot permanently then.
    • Moyles spent most of the 52hr sgow calling him that lol
    • I stand guilty as charged as the DS poster.... It was I Okay, so yes Connor has good energy and does the show well, I take it back, however, my last experience of him he spent every other link saying "It's Connor Coates in for the ledge that is Charlie Hedges" and then he started saying "Clem Douglas" - again after critisising that I see she is styled as that sometimes The point I was trying to make was, yes we know it's Charlies show, we know she is a ledge, and we know she is not here today, no need to keep reminding us Regards R1 dance, I suspect Arielle is pointed at the drivetime slot to go against Mistajam unless we know it is breakfast that will be live ? Apologies to Connor and anyone offended by my comments, was just going on my past experience of Mr Coates, who seems to be a very competnt presenter
    • I know we have discussed this before, but can someone shed some light hoping @Lily Georgia can help Since the Wogan House closure, and 1-330 from Manchester, studio 82A (Mills) has been used by Scott's R2 show, in fact i note that him and Grandad Nelson are from there now days The question I have is with 1-330 coming from London again soon, who is getting a new studio? will Scott move to one of the newer ones down the corridor or will he remain in 82A and M&M get a new studio They cannot use 82D as that is used for drive, and currenlty 82A is in use by Scott from 2-4pm In the old days it used to be 82A for Greg, Scott, Annie and 82D Adele, RMC, Drive, Jack I note that Jack is in a brand new studio so maybe M&M will come from that one as well, maybe the same one as Vine uses?
    • Maia Beth is doing Friday Early Breakfast on 7th & 14th June.
    • Joel Mitchell is in for Nat on Sunday 9th June.
    • Ore Olukoga is on 13.00-16.00 on Friday 31st May and Friday 7th June.  Nikita Kanda is doing Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June.
    • Very pleased for producer Amy - it's no coincidence many of the best shows in recent years have had her working on them. You can tell her & Helena are a great production duo and that the whole Matt & Mollie team are a really close-knit unit in general. Some lovely speeches by both Matt & Mollie too to end the show on Sunday.
    • Echo what most have said here. Connor has great energy which is important for that sort of slot and the shame for him is that the dance line-up is so strong that there's no obvious 'in' for him to get a regular slot -Danny, Sarah, Pete Tong, Arielle, Charlie Hedges, Jerry and Charlie Tee are all great in their slots. A live show on Radio 1 Dance really feels the obvious way to get a proper foot in the door at Radio 1. Although to be fair to the DS critic I think it was just the one poster and can very much hear Connor in my head saying 'in for the legend that is Charlie Hedges'.
    • James Cusack is in for Jack on Friday 14th June, doing the chart while Jack is at Download.
    • I remember hearing Amy first on Scotts show and she was great on that, the daft quiz questions always made me smile. It's really nice to see the hard work has paid off for them all.
    • Actually the worst tends to be those who comment on Radio Today news stories. People who haven’t listened to younger oriented radio stations in years who say things like “who?” about any job going to any presenter aged younger than 50.
    • Ahhh very happy for Amy - that’s very well deserved! I didn’t hear their final show but are Matt and Mollie keeping Helena? Hopefully she might be the main producer of their new show!
