Johnny Yawn reunited with Denise Van Outen

Johnny Vaughan is to team up with Denise Van Outen again this month as part of Capital Radio's "new look" breakfast show. Both presenters will be paid £1 million and hope this will gain the listeners lost when Chris Tarrant stepped down from breakfast.

The pair were quite good on the Big Breakfast but will they be strong enough to take on Moyles in London? Or will she be the final nail in the coffin for the show?

When you're on a national radio station with a listenership of 8 million people you don't need to worry about some local radio station dj and his sidekick.

Moyles' biggest compettition comes from Christian O'Connel on Virgin which is why he never gets mentioned. People outside the M25 (crazy I know but there are places) don't care about Johnny Vaughn or Crapital.

I think the trouble with Capital these days is it doesn't have a unique sound. It no longer plays the songs that it used to that made it stand out from Radio 1. Now local stations just seem to morph into playing whatever 'the greatest radio station in the world' plays.

The only songs that differ on their playlist to Radio 1 is Enrique Iglesias, Janet Jackson, and Joss Stone.

They had it right, now too many want to be Radio 1 these days.

Browsing Capital's website etc. I Can't find ANY info on this? What is the source?

Daily Mail.

They dont usually put their own news on their website until its done and dusted, but its been all over the newspapers today. It seems 95.8 are after the chemistry they created on the telly. Should be good, and well done to Van Outen!

Its actually a good station, and Johnny is doing okay as a presenter. Why do you kids give other stations such a hard time? The chemistry between them hopefully is still there. :)

Kids?

I have listened to Vaughn occasionally and found him to be very boring, he doesn't actually seem to say anything that interests me. It's all banal waffle, I like my morning show to be a bit more random and a lot less "nice"

I give other stations a hard time because I love radio and most other stations exist purely to make money for the investors rather than seeing the adverts as a way to finance the station. All GWR stations sound the same, they are the McDonalds of Radio and every presenter/ station is indistinguishable from another. The same can generally be said of Capital stations as well although they do allow slightly more personality.

Scott's original station (PowerFM) was my local station and I couldn't stand it. It played the most mundane middle of the road tripe and seemed to have an ad break every 5 minutes that lasted for 10 minutes and it was the same adverts in the same order over and over again.

I could go on but fear of using Jono's yearly bandwith allowance prevents me.

This time last year I was listening to O'Connell on Virgin. It's not a bad show at all, though still not in Moyles' league.

Agree with Andy about Johnny Vaughan. His show is fairly uneventful. It just plods along, planned out in advance and not very spontaneous.

they can have their little shows on capital and virgin. but what people fail to realise is that everyone dosent live in london. not everybody can be arsed to fork out for a dab radio everywhere they need to listen, or put up with virgins signal on medium wave. thats where radio 1 will always hold an advantage, through fm.

on the grid.

I can't believe there is a world outside the M25! Surely everyone has access to some of the finest galleries, museums, live shows, art, culture, restaurants, bars, clubs and public transport system in the world!

Hehehehe I've become a proper london Tw@t

Maybe Denise should have the show, and Johnny should go. I think she's more talented judging by her theatrical work.

She definitely has talent theatrically, didn't she do a lengthy run on stage on Broadway in the States? As to whether that makes her a good radio presenter I'm not so sure as it's a different talent. Johnny Yawn just annoys me these days - his time is up.

Or even better, make them into glue.

Haha, yes. Or handbags/coats. Vaughn might even make good dogfood.

    • Since Easter at the beginning of April, Vick, Katie and Jamie have been on together just 4 times. Which is crazy for a brand new, high profile Radio 1 show. Imagine Jordan being off that regularly on Capital because of ‘other commitments’ - would never happen.  Jamie has only presented 6 times in the past month. Katie has presented every single show. Given how she got the job at the last minute I think very likely she would have had other commitments, which she will have cancelled/rearranged, cos being Radio 1 drive time host is a massive gig.   Vick, Katie and Jamie - 4 times; Vick and Katie - 10 times; Katie and Jamie - 2 times; Katie and Lauren - 2 times.
    • I see Katie (and Mairead) were out with Jordan tonight.  I don’t listen to the show any longer, I am shocked they are allowed to mention Jordan.
    • At least I do not ask stupid questions…😂
    • I suggest you follow the other DJs too if so, you will learn the hardest working will go further 🤣
    • A simple check on his instagram would answer all your questions , he’s on tour with his wife and the team behind his podcast. I suggest anyone to follow the radio presenters, you will learn a lot about their other jobs and work commitments.
    • Where is Jamie? It felt like he was settling in when Vick wasn’t on but he’s not been on since last Tuesday now. They’ve not even mentioned him, in fact they’ve mentioned Jordan more than they’ve mentioned him in the last two days.
    • Scott's show is on the road next week, live from Malmö in Sweden on Wednesday and Friday, ahead of Eurovision. As he's doing the semi final coverage on the TV on Tuesday and Thursday alongside Rylan, Gary Davies sits in for him on those days.
    • I don't feel there's so much overlap between M&M and Scott's shows. M&M is of a similar calibre to Scott & Chris on R1, with genuine laugh out loud moments and usually a show packed full of real interesting content. Scott's R2 show is IMO a shadow of the stuff he did on R1 (not his fault, he's doing exactly what station management want), with music and content to appeal to a much older audience.
    • To be fair, Scott & Chris would've still been fine on Radio 1. It was mentioned at the time that Scott's move was very much on Radio 2's part rather than Radio 1 wanting to move them on. That's the one problem that Radio 2 has, trying to appeal to such a wide demographic.. it's the perfect listen for many, but equally a turn off for many others. I think they have the balance fairly right.
    • I agree Scott has always been a good standalone presenter, but always better when with someone. When chappers left the radio one show it felt a different show and Chris joining was what it needed and brought new life. for the format of the radio 2 show Scott’s show fits well with the station but again, there’s the huge gap between radio1 and 2 As been said already old radio2 listeners feel it now feels too young with latest changes, yet old radio1 listeners still feel radio 2 feels too old. The inbetween stage demographic of too old for radio 1 but too young for radio 2 is still not catered for radio 2 was left to grow old with its audience for too long and to change things up now feels to try and change a brand image the right thing to do is leave it as it is and cater for that 1.5 demographic which I’m sure the new proposed 00s and 10s station will do if approved. Problem is it’s so overdue that by the time it gets off the ground these listeners are already likely to be lost and the changing image of radio2 likely to lose what it stands for as a brand with the “it’s too young now “  moving to boom and the “ it still sounds old “ crowd not able to move with their favourite presenters like Scott so finding themself on capital a radio 1.5 would have been perfect for Scott and Chris, seems unlikely but this is why I think who branding of bbc radio needs a rethink if these new stations get off ground
    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
