Anyone else find it odd that they dropped this at midnight on a Saturday? Sounds like someone got a hold of the news and was going to publish before they said anything.

It looked to me like it was embargoed until midnight as all the articles went up bang on 12. Could be a number of reasons but it happens a lot with announcements such as this.

It must have been embargoed until Sunday and they released it bang on midnight. I think it was slightly odd and a bit of a shame that Zane didn't reveal it himself on his show tomorrow though.

Strewth ! I wasn't expecting that news. That leaves Scott as the only DJ over 40 with a daily show on radio one !Zane will b missed :(

Always thought Huw Stevens would have taken over Zane's show when he departed, but I think Annie is a good choice. Very pleased that Phil Taggart has a new show.

I'll miss Zane's show. A fantastic and passionate broadcaster who's show has always been consistently good.

Is this the beginnings of more announcements to schedule changes?...

This is a complete shock- I thought Zane would become a permanent feature of the schedule. I never really listened to his show, but as the man himself would've said, "you gotta respect what he's doing". I guess this explains his recent "u ok hun" moments- with only a few weeks left on air, he's gotta make the most of all his talents. I'm gonna miss his handovers with Greg the most, two minutes every day of complete weirdness and hilarity. Annie Mac is funny, but I just can't see the handovers being quite as good.

Also, if they're announcing this three weeks in advance, and Scott's contract ends in April... We're not out of the woods yet.

Also, a DJ being poached to work at Apple? Unless he's planning on utilising his secret coding skills, he's probably going to be working at the Beats division. They've probably offered him sh**tonnes of money as well. I'd better get recording a couple of his shows for the archive then!

EDIT: Actually, I've just seen in The Guardian (my favourite) that he's going to iTunes Radio (a streaming service, not an actual radio station) and he's moving to the States with his family.

Really sad that Zane is going, his show is one of the best around and his interviews are one of a kind, particularly Jay Z, Kanye, Eminem, Rick Rubin and Chris Martin, such ease during his interviews and doesn't use prompts, just his memory. Also his masterpiece series is pretty incredible, definitely pushing the boundaries of radio by playing out entire albums on air.

Really excited for Annie's new show though, she'll be a brilliant replacement, it will be interesting to see what she does though with some of the features. I was quite surprised she took it though considering her busy DJ career which has extended to America now.

Super happy for Phil though, he really needed more than 1 hour a week, particularly as one of the best specialist DJ's on the station.

I don't think Scott is going anytime soon, I think we still have 1-2 more years of him on the station, I think he might make it to 20 years on Daytime. (Does anyone know the record for longest daytime DJ?)

I think that would be Simon Bates who did the mid morning show for 16 years from 1977 to 1993.

Wow. This news both surprises and baffles me. Surely Radio 1 should be making changes before all the usual presenters get back around Christmas time, so they're all ready for the new year (Jan 1st). Sporadically announcing "Jameela is being replaced", "Scott might leave", "Zane is leaving", "Phil is getting more airtime", etc seems strange.

It's nice to keep it fresh though, and while I respect the Radio 1 Gods (aka Ben Cooper and co.) decision, I feel it was a bold (see what I did there?) move.

RIP Zane Lowe, Radio 1 Presenter / Future Apple Employee. You will be sadly missed by all.

In fairness it seems JamEela and Zane both chose to leave for their own

seperate reasons. In fact Jameela might come back one day

The fact that he's got a job to go to at Apple makes it sound more like he was poached than forced out. To be fair, Apple do have ALLLLLLL the monies.

I guess even though we're on board, Zane's walking the plank.

EDIT: Oh, also, isn't Annie Mac a dance DJ as opposed to a cross genre new music (wo)man? I would've thought Phil Taggart was a better choice, unless they're making the 7PM slot a dance show five days a week.

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
