Newsbeat

I am a regular listener to Radio 1 during the week and weekends and am surprised they are continuing to share Newsbeat between Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Vernon just totally cut a song short to be in time for the 10:30am news this morning. Sounds very unprofessional and somewhat annoying also. Don't seem to get this problem quite as much though during the week. Could this be the DJ at fault?

I would imagine getting the timings to match up on 2 different shows is tricky. It's all part of the newsbeat cuts. They have cut the news from dev's show as well

I just don't agree with them just cutting a song mid way through - a BBC National Radio Station. A local one maybe you would expect it but Radio 1, you would think they could find a way to make it work better to sound better!

Personally my response would be that if the DJ can't get his timings right to get to the news on time, then he's to blame, not the scheduled news programming?

Hmm I guess cutbacks are cutbacks and I can see the need/desire to combine 1/1x newsbeats. Seems so wasteful doing them differentely! I agree with Nik, its not Newbeats fault. If they are given a time of 10:30 for example, its the producers/presenters role to ensure they are both ready for news at 10:30. Obviously took their eye off the ball yesterday!

Yes this was bought in a few months. There is a post on my blog outlining the changes. It was made due to BBC budget cuts. Weekends simuilcasted the news and now so do daytime. Therefore, all shows have a running order and it is down to the presenter and producer to stick that running order. The one positive is that the newsreaders don't have to hang around anymore!

Because they can't just have silence til the news if they run out of things to say..

Even "And now itis time for Newsbeat with Nomia Iqbal, at 1:30, on bbc radio 1" would have filled the time better, or saying what's coming up on the show...

At school we did a cheesy radio show for charity, and even we worked out time management, had scripts being written to fill just the right amount of time and cutting songs out / changing them to fit... we lengthened a cheesy interview by a question to give us exactly the right amount of time to play Rick Astley before the end of lunch so the bell didn't cut over it... not difficult.

I would love to see Moyles being forced to stop a song to go to the news...

Is it something to do with ticking songs that need to be played off a list? Especially today...when they needed to make up time following the Peter Andre interview which was a bit later than expected.

Either way, I'm also not happy with this. Agree that it sounds very unprofessional, and today was just ridiculous when Stingin' Belle was cut short for Gangnam Style...which in turn didn't even make it to the end befoe 3:30..

It does seem like the playlist song count is on the increase. Less talking, more shorter "bits" across the board outside of interviews. I can remember Scott talking on-air about pushing songs to the next half hour if they couldn't fit them in. Doesn't seem like they're allowed to do that anymore.

    • OJ Borg is in for Trevor Nelson on the Rhythm Nation tonight (with Phill Williams on overnight). He's also in for Michael Ball for the next two Sundays (12th and 19th May). Ros Atkins (BBC's Analysis editior) is in for Jeremy Vine on Thursday. Another new name to Radio 2 is Oliver Hides from BBC Radio Wales. He sat in for Owain Wynn Evans yesterday and he's in again this Thursday (9th May) and Bank Holiday Monday (27th) Spoony in for Scott Mills from Tuesday 28th till Friday 31st May.
    • Thought they would make it easier to get to this event. There's been no communication from the council or organisers about travel, even though there's talk of train strikes. Smaller councils have done a better job.
    • They do sound good together, but I'm not sure Rylan will want the extra commitments.
    • I have accepted Chris is unlikely to join Scott's show, and that Chappers has moved on, but I still think he could do with a co-host. The most logical solution, I think, is Rylan. He appears more often on his show than not, and they are great together. Radio 2 could lose Rylan's Saturday show and extend his reach by appearing during the week. I think they'd be great!
    • Tattoo took a while to grow on me. I couldn't see the fuss until weeks after. We have a split household here where the war on Gaza is overshadowing an enjoyment. I'm hoping for a protest of some sort.
    • I've heard that the staging is very impressive.  That and him being "known" might prevent an embarrassing result.  I'm a terrible judge of Eurovision though as Tattoo is still so very meh to me.
    • Feels like after the success of Sam Ryder we are going back to our old ways. Olly Alexander's song is pretty weak. Anyone fancy our chances this year?
    • The more time goes on the more you think if they'd actually put some thought into it it should've been Vick & Katie from the start. A proven pairing and Katie ended up on the show anyway - whereas Katie's even mentioned she was only asked to join after the Jamie announcement And even by Going Home standards on time off, it's quite funny that a few months in we still haven't had a full week of the supposed line-up - and that's with a 4-day week.
    • I heard something about what is your favourite wood? Wtf 😂
    • Was the same vibe on the Easter Monday show they did too. Just random questions and the like…. Katie is definitely the glue around making the show listenable.
    • Vick and Jamie together are quite… awkward. Random discussion seems to be at an all time high without Katie. Maybe it’s just that there’s a lack of features today.
    • Jamie not even knowing about the big weekend day and the fact he starts the show at 14:00 just says everything.
    • I still haven’t forgiven Radio 1 for signing Laing. Vick and Jordan was good, you could hear the chemistry on air
    • I just want to add though that I am beginning to enjoy the show a bit more now that it’s settled in - I think Jamie (when he’s there) has calmed down a bit and then the new features that have been progressively added over the last couple of weeks have been good too.    I still don’t think it’s a patch on Vick and Jordan together, but it is now a show that seems like it could have legs into the future and once Matt and Mollie start in July, I could see myself sticking with R1 all afternoon.
    • I think it’s a slimmer line-up and seems to fall short in previous years where it seemed almost double that I know Raye is booked to perform and is a headline name. I think the issue with a station like capital they are dealing with a rather lacklustre year for pop and theres no real big pulls for pop festivals that are an easy sell out right now. I think Capital has had seen it’s Capital Ball’s as for any generic pop music listener I don’t know whether Bradley Simpson, Aitch and Paul Russel have the universality to play in a stadium even Sugababes think it would be better if they chosen a smaller outdoor location or Wembley arena.
