Why hasn't this started a craze of people threatening to blow up airports over twitter?

i did think if tweeting something like that but thought i had better not just encase them MI5 & FBI sneaky bastards caught up with me, if they went after real threats the world wouldn't be in the state it is, they just go after the easy options = lazy.

anyway Sir Stephen Fry is a proper gent for this

http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/science_technology/man+fined+for+twitter+airport+aposbomb+threatapos/3643287

In a statement, the Crown Prosecution Service told Channel 4 News: "While Mr Chambers may have meant this as a joke, the airport could not risk treating it as such. The threat had to be taken seriously by the airport authorities, who contacted the police. It caused unnecessary disruption because of a menacing communication.

"There is nothing funny about remarks of this nature as they can cause serious disruption to transport services and divert police attention away from genuine crimes. Where a complaint is made to the police and they pass a file of evidence to the CPS we will examine it. If the evidence is there, then the public interest will usually require a prosecution.

um hello, CPS? These innocent comment DID divert police attention away from serious crimes, due to some idiot's lack of a sense of humour!

Also that line in the CPS statement about causing unnecessary disruption contradicts an earlier point in the article that says "The court heard the tweet had no operational effect on the airport.".

It's not like a real threat would actually be made over Twitter... I think this should have gone before a Jury and not Magistrates who are probably naive about technology in general and Twitter in particular... if it had to go to Court at all.

And yeah, Stephen Fry, someone who DOES understand Twitter and technology, being an absolute legend as ever :D

  • 4 months later...

Sorry to resurrect a thread, but this is relevant and I didn't think it needed a new thread;

Just an update, this guy has taken this to appeal which is happening right now at Doncaster Crown Court.

One of the things that has come out so far is the Prosecution trying to desperately stall for time and get the appeal chucked out, and that the Policeman who interviewed Chambers about it was just one in a long line of people who could tell it was obviously a joke (something the Crown Prosecution Service conveniently omitted from the original case and information the defending lawyers had no access to at the time). Even he took the text fully in context (i.e as a JOKE) like the guy at the airport, it appears only the CPS failed in that regard... a rather important failing.

"Biggest news so far is that interviewing police officer concluded that it was only a joke for his twitter followers."

"For some reason, CPS failed to disclose this police officer's evaluation to defence at first trial... " are two of the Tweets from the Lawyer fighting the appeal on Mr Chambers' side.

BBC TV Coverage attempted to recreate the tweet.. shame they got it completely wrong, with their wording of it turning it into a direct threat and missing out vital words, taking it right out of context (Once again I lose faith in the impartiality of the BBC, but that's a discussion for another time).

Sorry, but in this day + age of terrorism, things like that are just not funny!!

It's the same if you go to an airport and are stupid enough to say you have a bomb with you, you wind up being strip-searched, arrested, etc., etc. How can the airport tell from a tweet what is going on in someone's head.

By all means bring him in for questionning, establish the facts (i.e it was a frustrated rant) maybe doing a bit of an investigation into whether this guy is likely to commit an atrocious act of terrorism without hauling it through the courts and drawing it out for months and months. I.E sort it at grassroots.

Yeah, especially when no-one investigating took it seriously in the first place.

Also the CPS fail for not making some evidence available at the original trial (i.e the interviewing policeman's conclusion that it was NOT a viable threat). I could understand the sentence if they'd investigated and maybe found evidence that he had the means as well as motive. Kinda sickens me how this guy was convicted, but the people threatening troops returning from Afghanistan get nothing done about them, and don't even get me started on Al-magrahi. Seems to me he was probably seen as an easy target by an officious idiot at the CPS, even when the airport and police had deemed this a NON-CREDIBLE threat.

Yeh, but how can anyone be certain it was "without intent" without bringing the person in for questioning.

They did bring him in for questioning. The interviewing officer said his conclusion was that it wasn't a credible threat, and that was after the Airport Security guy and the Airport Manager also deemed it not a genuine threat. It should have been filed away at that point with the guy given a warning to be more careful.

shouldn't have delayed him then ?

yeah like a terrorists is going to tweet that they are going to blow up a airport, yes the CIA do follow what people say on the internet *go fuck yourself CIA wankers lots of people know who really did 9/11*

seems strange to arrest this guy for a tweet when Tony Blair releases real terrorists who have murdered hundreds of people & then invites then to number 10 for tea & biscuits all in the name of peace, everyone calls him a god for bringing about peace, epic fail !

good on Stephen Fry for helping fund the legal fee's for this fake trial :)

as for bringing him in for questioning :hahaha: you really have no idea do you

http://www.daelnet.co.uk/features/menwithhill/ that's just the start !

about time the CPS did something about real criminals, no wonder nobody has any respect for the police.

    • Yep am very much Capital Breakfast now. Jordan, Chris and Sian are a great trio and it's got that feel of the old shows Jordan and Chris used to do on Radio 1. It doesn't take itself too seriously but is packed full of content and slick. With Greg he's great but 6 years in you've probably heard it all before plus frankly I can sit through the Capital Playlist a lot more easily than the Radio 1 playlist (where some of the inclusions and omissions can be quite baffling at times). Plus after things like the Oscars or Met Gala or if there's a particularly big TV show or film or popstar then Greg won't half wang on about it at times. I guess it's partly to be expected with it being a Breakfast show on a young station but it can feel very London bubble and get tired.
    • Ore Olukoga is in for Arielle on Tuesday 14th May. James Cusack is in for Danny Beard on Saturday 1st June. James Cusack is in for Nat on Sunday 2nd June.
    • I honestly never thought in a million years I’d move from Radio 1 to be a regular Capital breakfast show listener. But it’s got pretty much everything I want - 3 really genuine, entertaining mates having a laugh, playing silly games and it all sounds great. I became a big fan of Chris from his days with Scott, became a Jordan fan on Going Home, and Sian Welby is newer to me but is loads of fun too.  It’s great and I’ve shocked myself by transferring my listening at breakfast. For me Greg’s show now feels very tired and it’s time for something new. But with Jordan gone that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Greg’s had a great run and I’m a fan - but there’s no new ideas now. I still listen to Radio 1 at other times - but this show feels like very serious competition for Greg.
    • They have built four new studios to increase capacity, alongside the existing six.  Bearing in mind that some of the output of R1, 1X, R2 & 6M comes from elsewhere, and Asian Network is gradually moving all output to Birmingham, this should be enough!
    • How do they manage to cater for 6Music and Radio 2 on that floor? Did they adapt it?
    • I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!
    • A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.
    • He must be in his element. At Eurovision and a Gold award!
    • I really like Rylan, and as much of a fun idea it would be to have Scott and Rylan together, I think Rylan is too much of a main character.  Scott needs a side-kick rather than a full on co-host I think. That’s why he and Chris worked so well, Scott steered the show, and Chris was the perfect person to have alongside him.    I don’t religiously listen to Rylan’s show, but when I do catch it, it’s perfect weekend energy. He has a very warm presenting style too, but something makes me think he and Scott together every day would be a bit too much.
    • So pleased for Scott on his best entertainment show win. As much as I miss his R1 style, he clearly puts so much into his shows, well deserved and it’s a big two fingers up to all the abuse he has had since joining R2
    • There are a lot that share your sentiments. People have made comparisons to the different takes to Ukraine.
    • It's a big 'No' from me (Israel-Palestine). No further comments.
    • A joke about pirates: ‘but we’re not jumping ship, like someone else’
    • I felt it was much better with the staging and everything.  I still cannot warm to his voice but he's a very good performer. Ireland was everything though.
    • Scott must feel somewhat vindicated to have won his award last night, after all the manure thrown at him by Steve Wright fans.
