Radio 1 star hit by huge fines over parking

Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills racked up more than £1,000 in unpaid fines after flouting parking laws.

The presenter, who earns £150,000 a year, got urgent demands as the penalties on his electric scooter mounted over the last month - and he was facing court action.

But when the Mirror contacted the BBC yesterday, 36-year-old Mills paid the fines immediately.

In a statement, he admitted he was "having a bit of a nightmare" and added: "I didn't realise you couldn't park anywhere.

"You will be glad to know I have now sorted out a parking permit. No more fines for me."

Mills was given the £2,999 e-motive e3 electric scooter as a freebie by the makers in return for him promoting it. However, the scooter company failed to register him as the owner so the fines were initially sent to the firm.

A source said: "Scott was parking his scooter all over London and he was racking up fine after fine.

"Maybe he thought that because it's electric and he didn't have to pay tax or congestion charge, he was exempt from parking rules as well. He was very much mistaken."

The source added: "He's only had the scooter a month so to have accrued a grand in fines was quite an impressive effort."

Mills was facing a debt recovery firm, and county court action would have followed if he had refused to pay up.

Ironically, when he got the eco-friendly scooter last month, he said he was looking forward to avoiding tickets.

He said: "I recently gave up my car as I found owning one in London was pointless. I was always getting parking tickets and was paying so much to keep something that just sat there unused most of the time."

Mills, one of Radio 1's rising stars, is currently filling in for motormouth Chris Moyles on the breakfast show.

erm it is exempt from the congestion charge, both being a scooter & a electric one.

EXEMPTIONS TO CHARGES

There are several groups of users and vehicles that are exempt from the Central London Congestion Charging scheme. These include disabled drivers, licensed taxis, minicabs and public service vehicles, motorbikes, mopeds and scooters and emergency service vehicles. Also, residents in the congestion charging zone pay only 10% of the charge (£4 a week instead of £8 per day) and cars that are diverted into the zone will not be charged so long as they do not deviate from the diversion.

In addition to this, 'green' cars using alternative fuels (gas, electric, fuel cells and bi/dual fuel vehicles) are exempt from the charge. When the congestion charge becomes based on emissions, owners of larger polluting vehicles living in London will receive no discount and will have to pay the full £25 per day; while the list of vehicles with exemption because of low emissions may well be extended.

It's not the congestion charge he's got done for - It's the parking

My goodness, that's a pretty funky donkey!
