I heard about this earlier, they say the lineup and playlist WONT change, which just makes me think what's the point of an EXPENSIVE rebrand at all in that case? Just cut the stations no-one wants and leave the rest instead of making any newer ones an 'extra' of the original 5...

I like this! Look how succesful 1xtra has been! If it had been Radio 8/8music then it would have been rubbish! and from a marketing perspective it allows so much more to be done to raise awareness of the station!

Actually i bet you will find loads of cross overs happening/simulcasts etc so it will essentially become cheaper to run but also more visible as a station.

The issue, though, is that 6Music is distinctive. Unlike 1Xtra which you could argue goes hand in hand with Radio 1 (similar shows and DJs) it doesn't seem to work the same way with 6Music and Radio 2. It's why it was 6Music to start with rather than Radio 2 Extra.

Wait, by what standards exactly has 1Xtra been a 'success'... Is it a successful station when a DJ on air actually says the ratings are so low they technically register as Zero and that he's broadcasting to no-one?

Westwood said it as a joke, and no the ratings don't register as zero. I think that 1Xtra is a great station that serves its purpose well. The playlist plays a wide and diverse range of music from the genres it plays that other similar stations like Choice and Galaxy can't/don't offer. The overnight specialist programming is awesome too.

The BBC's head of audio and music Tim Davie has said 6 Music will not be rebranded as Radio 2 Extra, quashing speculation that it might be revamped rather than shut down as part of the corporation's strategic review.

Writing on his BBC blog, Davie said there were "no plans" to rebrand the station, which has been earmarked for closure in a review ordered by the BBC Trust. A consultation is under way and the trust is due to report is final findings late next month.

Davie has previously talked about salvaging some of 6 Music's programmes and content by moving it to other parts of the BBC's radio network. He said that remained likely. "I said we would look at protecting some 6 Music programming by redeploying it elsewhere and considering how we can also do justice to its legacy in areas like new music development. This commitment also remains...... But simply rebranding 6 Music as Radio 2 Extra is not one of our plans."

Davie has also confirmed that Radio 7 will become a sister channel to Radio 4, prompting reports that a smilar arrangement could be applied at Radio 6.

Davie reiterated: "While we have proposed rebranding Radio 7 as Radio 4 Extra, there are no such plans for 6 Music."
