The BBC will need to show that Radios 1 and 2 are not damaging their commercial rivals under a Tory government, shadow culture, Jeremy Hunt, signalled yesterday.

Mr Hunt expressed concern that the stations are no longer providing listeners with a "distinct service".

He said he wanted to unerstand the logic of the corporation's decision to axe minority radio stations, like 6 Music, while its two main music stations remain untouched.

He said that a Tory government would act to ensure that the broadcaster's dominance was kept in check so that Britain continues to have a vibrant media industry.

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Mr Hunt also said that a Tory government would help boost ITV to help it compete with BBC television, by allowing the commercial channel to increase its advertising revenue.

Mr Hunt indicated that the Corporation's two largest music radio stations were too similar to their commercial rivals, such as Absolute Radio, and local stations such as Capital FM.

He said: "When you have huge stations like Radio 1 and Radio 2 that really dominate the UK radio market they do need to make sure that they're providing distinct services.

"If the BBC starts providing stuff that the market would provide of its own accord you'll drive out the independent sector and you'll end up with one show in town and that's bad for consumers."

Radio audience figures released by Rajar in February showed that BBC radio stations, including its local stations, had a 55% listening share. Radio 1 had a ten per cent share, while Radio 2 had a 17 per cent share.

lol Moyles is one of the few on radio1 doing something off-format, he plays less music etc (commercial stations tend to go for more music, even advertising the fact that they 'don't repeat any songs all day' and other such BS.

Radio-1 & Radio-2 were first, so it is the commercial stations who are copying Radio-1, Radio-2, not the other way round.

Come over to Holland and enjoy Sky Radio and Slam FM. Slam FM has a far shorter playlist than the Scott Mills Show on really heavy rotation. And all of them have 5 minutes of ads all at the same time at five to the half hour. Commercial radio Dutch style. Bloody great!
