R1 predictions for 2010?

I think the reason that this kind of thread is appearing more is that the regular, current and loyal radio 1 listeners are unhappy with the new schedule. I dont know about anyone else but i am finding myself listening at moment out of habbit, hoping it will get better, and also that im not quite ready for steve wrights love songs!

Personally I think we will have more chnages next year, the station isnt sounding right, they havent found a balance and it doesnt seem to be working weekdays. I think we could see Moyles leave, the station isnt going where he is anymore. Mills will take over for one year only as an interim replacement until someone else is found or ready (reggie maybe?) and then he will leave or move to weekends, chart show etc. No one has mentioned Grimmy but I have a feeling he may be scotts replacement, or atleast be moved more into daylight (zane maybe?).

For me it will be this:

Early: Dev stays put (but if he left would we even notice - maybe they will slip someone new in here?)

Brekkie: Moyles Leaves, Mills as interim but Reggie Long term

Morning: Fearne will stay - I think she is in for the long run

Afternoon: If greg moves he will take drive, and he will be replaced by either Annie Mac or Coxy if she comes back (I doubt it though- i think this might be here final stint, and we see her as cover on radio 2 shows as they appeal to the more 25+ rather than the 35+ when chris evans takes over

Drive: If not greg it will be Grimmy

Evening: I dont think Zane will leave the station but I think he may take a different role, maybe move later on as they push the specialist/alternative & new music stuff out of the way. I could see a swap with grimmy or Huw taking this slot if grimmy gets daytime duties.

Weekend: Edith will stay as breakfast, vernon will go and we will get a new presenter who will take sat & sun 10-1. Jo will stay, she sounds good, as good as she has ever been and has a few more years left in her. Moving to this slot was great for her and it has totally freshened her up and given a new lease of life on radio 1. Maybe Vernon for request show?

, if not it will be a 1 xtra dj promoted (max maybe - oooh forgot about her she could do afternoons maybe or take over switch duties.

Wow, i didnt even mean to write all that but it just goes to show how things at R1 arent as we want that we all write this about it.

But at the same time, we are staying loyal and listening because I think we all know there are more chnages to come, and they are in the middle of one of those transitional periods that happen every 5 or 6 years at the station. I mean who can rememebr when May left - that was a sad day and we all thought it was down hill (well i did anyway)!

I agree actually. Best post so far.

I forgot, btw, that it's the BBC Trust who decide on the "age" thing. I've had this explained to me before. I still don't think it's right.

Once R1 was all about the new music, now it's all about keeping the UK's 10 year olds happy. :-/

You won't get on air, I can assure you!! Unless you lie about your age.

R1 producers ask ages when they ring you back about texts. I've had this happen a few times this year. Tell your real age, and the conversation ends. Fact. (Although they are polite enough, but you can tell 42 is not a good look for R1's ears).

it is interesting to see what people think, ive found myself listening to R1 a lot less this year, and think that something odd is happening with Chris Moyles and Scotts shows .

I dont enjoy listening to Chris's interactions with Aled especially, it makes Chris sound

much more adult and sensible than he used to sound. partly because aled's unusual sense of humour makes it harder to bounce ideas and jokes back. aled tends to take everything really seriously. He didnt seem to get the humour in the fact that he compared himself to Pete tong the other morning, when he was talking about doing a gig that no-none turned up to!

Another thing that is really irritating is that I think, if the powers that be really want R1 to be a station for young people then surely 80% of ALL the staff should be in the correct age bracket, including performers and producers etc. They made all this fuss about the switch shows being for teenagers between 13- 17 and then had all their usual staff who I assume are older than 17, all turning up and talking about it on air as well. If you want to make it into something for young people only, then give them the ownership of the station...

Use people like Jono and some of the members on this board to run R1!

I saw Fearne interviewing Peaches Geldorf the other day and was struck by how much older and patronising Fearne seemed to the much younger Peaches. And although I do think peaches is irritating...she is part of a different generation than most of the current media experts! Part of a generation of teenagers, who watch DVDs and listens to music via word of mouth, and part of a generation that rarely watch TV or listens to radio.

1. It'll probably be shite if they did that

2. John Peel had one of the youngest audience profiles on R1. How does that fit in to "only young people should speak to young people".

That's it. Right there. I knew I couldn't quite put my finger on it. That's what the BBC Trust are focusing too much on, trying to actually relate to younger people!!

Radio 1 was fantastic around c. 2003/2004 in my opinion. If only it could go back to the format of that time.

    • Radio 1 at Parklife will be presented by Vicky and Nat. Nat is currently listed to present her usual Sunday show on that weekend but I imagine that will change and someone else will be doing it instead. The Radio 1 presenters at Download will be Daniel P Carter, Jack Saunders, Alyx Holcombe and Nels Hylton.
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky as well that day.
    • So the end of weekend afternoons this week - new show is July 1st.
    • Arielle is in for Greg on Monday 27th May.
    • He’s definitely gotten better and the show has sounded fine this week. I think it been at its best when it’s been Katie and Jamie or Vick and Katie. Vick and Jamie are ok together, but I do think the show sounds better when it’s Vick and Katie and therefore I still don’t really understand the point of the trio.    Jamie is, however, a lot better than Danny Beard!
    • The RAJAR coming on later this year reflecting later summer to autumn will be interesting to how it reflects Matt and Mollie in afternoons to the revised changes on radio 1’s new music slots and the schedule re-shuffling Radio 3 introducing a new slate of programmes. Then, later on this year have speech radio stations having domestic political coverage of the election but also America’s presidential election.
    • I actually caught snippets of today’s show, and I found it much better than the last time I listened. I have made it no secret that I like Jamie on the radio, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Matt & him together last year. People have criticised him for not being relatable, but I have to agree with the comment above that I have always found him a naturally warm person to listen to. Maybe the going home set up was something that needed settling in and things are starting to take shape.  It must have been difficult for him joining an established duo in Vick & Katie to begin with.  Jamie was great on something songs today, fully engaged in the caller and sounded like a real presenter. Maybe he is doing as a lot of us hoped and really learning as he goes, how to do it properly.
    • Agree with this. The anti-Jamie feeling was IMO quite influenced by the negativity around him replacing Jordan, since Jordan was exceptional and also universally loved. When people mention Danny and Jamie in the same sentence about bad hiring decisions I almost choke - Jamie may not be perfect but he's several leagues better than Danny already and has bags of potential. Danny is poor and has shown zero potential...
    • Jamie started 4 March, and the figures only going up to 31 March, so it isn't reliable. But it has shown the numbers have dropped in afternoons compared to last quarter. It looks like it's Capital's gain.
    • Do these audience figures reflect Jordan leaving and Jamie replacing him?
    • I think Jamie is really starting to settle into the role well. He comes across as really warm, and genuinely invested in the listeners when he’s talking to them which is nice. I think he’s building a really great relationship with Vicki and Katie too. His recent great company podcast is great too, where he has quite a deep chat with someone new each week. He’s clearly a very genuine person and I think he has some real potential.
    • Most probably. But do wonder what the future of the relax themed programmes will be when they officially wind down that service.
    • I think it's just to replace Wind Down presents... which was in that timeslot, and I'm guessing Chillout Anthems was just a buffer since it'll still be played at 06:00 on Sundays.
    • With listening on the U.K. for the industry in general it is good overall as most stations reach is on the up and shows radio to be more sustainable and stable outlet than linear televisions channels. This RAJAR I think with the increase shift to DAB+ the BBC will be able to say it has it’s audiences for the proposed new stations it wishes to launch and think the new innovative ideas that it seems Jack himself can take credit for on the new music show think the younger under 30 gen z demographic could increase se in that time-slot.
    • Conor Knight is in for Sam & Danni on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. It's Radio 1 at Parklife, 13.00-16.00 on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. Matt & Mollie are in for Greg from Monday 10th to Friday 14th June - it's just Matt on the Thursday. It's Radio 1 at Download, 13.00-16.00 on Friday 14th June.
