Moyles hits out at 'dull' radio

Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles has accused the BBC of making dull programmes because it does not want to upset listeners.

He says that radio shows are "so formulaic [that] anyone different, like me or Jonathan (Ross), stands out".

Moyles has landed in hot water on several occasions. In March, he was censured by media watchdog Ofcom for mocking singer Will Young's sexuality.

But, he told the Radio Times: "The reality is you can't keep everyone happy all the time."

The furore surrounding the Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand's prank calls on Radio 2 last year led the BBC to bolster its compliance procedures.

"The BBC is in a very weird state where they just don't want to upset anybody," said Moyles.

"Everything now needs to be signed, sealed and approved 18 times."

He added: "We're not trying to change the world, but because radio is so dull, so boring and so formulaic, and anyone different - me or Jonathan - stands out.

"So the BBC is throwing down rules and regulations on you and then the newspapers are saying certain things and you're just trying to juggle everything while keeping everyone happy at the same time.

A BBC spokesman said: "Chris is never backwards in coming forwards but, while he is entitled to his opinion, we think that lively, distinctive and risk-taking radio is alive and well at the BBC.

"We have a duty to ensure all our programmes are editorially compliant, but that doesn't mean our producers and presenters can't take creative risks if it means better programmes for listeners."

Moyles was previously forced to apologise for swearing at a caller live on air.

His satirical song mocking Will Young was deemed inappropriate by Ofcom for condoning "negative stereotypes based on sexual orientation".

This the Daily Mail article Chris mentioned at the end of his show. Mostly the same as the BBC but with the Daily Mail spin

He's embarrassed the BBC on so many occasions that Jonathan Ross looks almost tame by his standards.

But controversial Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles has accused the Corporation of trying to silence him by 'throwing down rules and regulations' in the wake of the Andrew Sachs fiasco.

Moyles, who earns £630,000-a-year for his breakfast show, has been reprimanded for his on-air comments on numerous occasions and recently faced calls to be sacked after being accused of trivialising the Holocaust.

But the 35-year-old has whined that he has unfairly been labelled as an 'inhuman character' and has defended his conduct by claiming other presenters are 'dull and boring'.

'The BBC is in a very weird state where they just don't want to upset anybody,' he said. 'Everything now needs to be signed, sealed and approved 18 times.

'We're not trying to change the world, but because radio is so dull, so boring and so formulaic, anyone different - me or Jonathan - stands out.

'So the BBC is throwing down rules and regulations on you and then the newspapers are saying certain things and you're just trying to juggle everything while keeping everyone happy at the same time.

'The reality is that you can't keep everyone happy all the time.'

The Leeds-born DJ made the comments in the Radio Times ahead of his appearance on the BBC1 programme Who Do You Think You Are? which is to be shown on July 22nd.

In it, he learns about the tragic history of his poverty-stricken great-grandmother, who lost 10 of her fourteen siblings to disease whilst growing up in Ireland.

He was also reduced to tears during the show after discovering his great-grandfather was killed at Ypres in the First World War.

However, in January Moyles angered listeners shortly after filming the show when he said: 'I went off to Ireland and other places to film and unlike a lot of the Who Do You Think You Are? shows, I didn't go to Auschwitz.

'Pretty much everyone goes there whether or not they're Jewish. They seem to just pass through there on their way to Florida.'

He was accused of trivialising the Holocaust and reprimanded by his BBC managers amid calls to be sacked from listeners.

However, he has now complained that he is simply being targeted by people who do not agree with his loudmouth persona.

'I'm genuinely quite surprised at the reaction to it,' he adds. 'I think what happened is that there are some people whose view is that you can't say that word in any other context that what a horrible thing happened there.

'And it wasn't about anything that happened at Auschwitz at all. If everybody who had done Who Do You Think You Are? turned out to be royalty, I'd have said, 'Hey! It turns out I'm not related to royalty.

'A lot of it is people - the haters - using it as an attack on me. There are many perceptions of me, most of them false or exaggerated. The tabloidy version of me is this controversial, outrageous, almost inhuman character.

'Then there's the side friends see, which is kind of socially inept. At the end of the day, I'm just a guy on the radio, trying to make people smile on their way to work, or college or whatever. And I think I do it very well.'

Moyles, who has worked for Radio 1 since 1997 and styled himself as 'the saviour of early morning radio', has been reprimanded numerous times during his time there.

In 2002 he claimed on-air that he would take the virginity of Charlotte Church when she reached 16.

In February 2006 he apologised after telling a contestant on a live phone-in quiz, Donna from Newcastle, that her children were 'f*****g brats'.

Three months later he prompted his guest, Hollywood star Halle Berry, to ask 'are we having a racist moment?' after he impersonated a black man: 'I'm a black American guy. A big fat black guy. Put your hands in the air. I don't want to be shooting your a***.'

In December 2008 he issued a statement in apology after saying Poles make good prostitutes. Then in January 2009 he was accused of making homophobic remarks towards singer Will Young.

Chris is 100% right, Radio is dull and boring and the sooner bosses everywhere realise it, the better.

The end.

He was also right when he mentioned a bit about not taking a risk. Its got silly now that the slightest little joke people complain about.

People need to be more open minded when listening ti Moyles and Ross etc. If they dont agree with the content then why are they listening

People listen just so they can complain at the slightest thing I think. Of course then you get the complainers that read it in the papers and send their complaints in

They probably read it as you say then listen back just so they can say they heard it and were offended :hahaha:

They still talk about the Will Young thing as well, although not once has Will said he was upset or distressed by it! He probably saw the funny side!

Yeah they just wanted something to go on about. I bet if someone like Zane or Jo would have said it noone would have been bothered by it

Issues like racism and sexism(homophobia etc) will unfortunately always exist...so surely people should be allowed to complain and question things? although I generally like the Chris Moyles show, occasionally I do find him a bit too close to overstepping the mark!

But most of his recent interviews have shown a thoughtful sensible side to him. He and his team produce a popular show so should be trusted enough to get on with it!

I agree that the Beeb seem to have taken a "walk on eggshells" approach with their media now, I think it's really unnecessary, they shouldn't care what The Torygraph and The Daily Fail say, no matter what you do you are always going to offend and/or annoy someone and they shouldn't pander trying to please everyone, because that is impossible.

I'm not saying everything in life should be crude and cynical, but if you stamp out the more daring media things would be very boring indeed.

    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
    • Zoe Ball is back on the breakfast show on Monday.
    • Just listening to matt and mollie at work and heard them say it's their second to last show on weekends
    • And Arielle mentioned in her Instagram post that her final early breakfast show is the 27th of June - the Thursday before Glastonbury
    • When Matt covered breakfast on 22nd April, he said their new show was starting in 10 weeks, so that’d be the 1st July.
    • Would love for it to be like the Summer Friday Thing that me and @DC were remisincing about recently. Lots of events going on that could easily form part of it.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/summer/cardiff/thursday/1.shtml
    • I'm guessing there is also a stack of weekend events like Glastonbury
    • I think more likely it'll just be a temp presenter for weekends 1-4 to give Matt & Mollie time off, plus time to plan and pilot the new show.
    • Yeah I don’t think they’ll be anything that drastic - maybe a week or 2 of cover on early breakfast etc, but maybe just having that weekend afternoon slot covered over the summer means they can put someone on from September who maybe isn’t available until then?
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
