Enjoying the Franz set tonight on BBC Three at the moment.

In straw hat and green wellies, the BBC’s Andrew Marr looked lost in thought as he picnicked at Glastonbury.

It could be that the Beeb’s big-hitter was contemplating stunning performances by Lady Gaga and Lily Allen.

Then again, he might have been deliberating on the complexities of a BBC operation that has seen more than 400 of its employees despatched to cover the festival.

The BBC was criticised for the huge scale of its Glastonbury operation yesterday, with some questioning whether it should be devoting so many publicly funded resources to a four-day music and arts event at a time of economic turbulence.

And some staff were accused of treating the occasion as a ‘junket’ after it came to light that several BBC executives had been given free tickets.

The BBC has admitted that 125 staff and 150 freelancers are at Glastonbury, either as presenters, producers, directors or technical crew in order to broadcast across BBC2, BBC3, BBC4 and an interactive channel, as well as on Radio 1, 6 Music, 5 Live and a dedicated website. Hosts include Jo Whiley, Zane Lowe and Steve Lamacq.

Alongside them are about 130 short-term contractors hired by the BBC to offer ‘support’ at the 1,100-acre Somerset site. It says these include people who provide ‘some specialist technical services, rigging at the start and end of the project, and security’.

But critics have pointed out that by offering such blanket coverage, the BBC is needlessly duplicating its output.

Conservative MP Philip Davies, who sits on the House of Commons Culture Select Committee, said: ‘I can’t imagine any other broadcaster sending this many people to cover one festival. This demonstrates once again that the BBC is a bloated organisation. It doesn’t operate according to the rules that other broadcasters have to follow.’

Can't believe Blur, The Prodigy and Calvin Harris have all been scheduled at the same time today. Epic programming fail.

In a way I'm glad I'm not at Glasto, don't think I'd know what to do with myself. Who to see? Bet it's causing lots of arguments between friends and couples.

'To disagree with three-fourths of the British public is one of the first requisites of sanity'.

I think Blur were knobs for restricting coverage. If they wanted it kept under wraps don't play Glasto before your secret gigs.

The Daily Mail made me chuckle. They spent the time questioning why they had so many BBC presenters and workers there apparently costing £1.5m - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1196149/BBCs-Glasto-army-Why-does-415-people-cost-1-5m-cover-pop-festival.html

And then sent their reporter to photograph Jo Whiley and other stars and comment on their shoes. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1195932/Glastonbury-Jo-Whileys-wellies--250-Jimmy-Choo-wonder-went-expenses.html Like that wasn't a waste of money.

To be fair both Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen did the same, and Rage Against The Machine refused to let the BBC record ANY of their sets at T and Reading last year. It's not an uncommon request, especially by headliners, we were slightly spoilt last year with live and full coverage of all 3 headliners.

    • On July 8th Greg will surpass Grimmy's tenure on Radio 1 breakfast (5 years, 319 days) as the second-longest breakfast show presenter. He has already passed Tony Blackburn and Sim Mayo. I'm not sure if he will make Moyles' record of 8 years, 253 days, but he certainly still seems fresh and full of ideas!
    • I guess we'll have to wait and see when the new schedule kicks in, although I could see Scott staying where he is.  Assuming that's the case and there are no other moves, there would be several available studios for Matt & Mollie - 82C or 82E of the 'old' studios, and 82M or 82N of the new ones.
    • The BBC commissioning brief mentions it is a 'mid morning show' for Radio 1 Dance https://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/radio/documents/comm_brief_r1_dance_morning_show.pdf
    • Nothing to apologise about, I was just intrigued on how DS and UM react
    • I would be pretty confident that if they keep avoiding using James Cusack on that slot over the next few weeks, then it will probably be him that gets the show permanently!
    • That’s two names who probably won’t be doing that slot permanently then.
    • Moyles spent most of the 52hr sgow calling him that lol
    • I stand guilty as charged as the DS poster.... It was I Okay, so yes Connor has good energy and does the show well, I take it back, however, my last experience of him he spent every other link saying "It's Connor Coates in for the ledge that is Charlie Hedges" and then he started saying "Clem Douglas" - again after critisising that I see she is styled as that sometimes The point I was trying to make was, yes we know it's Charlies show, we know she is a ledge, and we know she is not here today, no need to keep reminding us Regards R1 dance, I suspect Arielle is pointed at the drivetime slot to go against Mistajam unless we know it is breakfast that will be live ? Apologies to Connor and anyone offended by my comments, was just going on my past experience of Mr Coates, who seems to be a very competnt presenter
    • I know we have discussed this before, but can someone shed some light hoping @Lily Georgia can help Since the Wogan House closure, and 1-330 from Manchester, studio 82A (Mills) has been used by Scott's R2 show, in fact i note that him and Grandad Nelson are from there now days The question I have is with 1-330 coming from London again soon, who is getting a new studio? will Scott move to one of the newer ones down the corridor or will he remain in 82A and M&M get a new studio They cannot use 82D as that is used for drive, and currenlty 82A is in use by Scott from 2-4pm In the old days it used to be 82A for Greg, Scott, Annie and 82D Adele, RMC, Drive, Jack I note that Jack is in a brand new studio so maybe M&M will come from that one as well, maybe the same one as Vine uses?
    • Maia Beth is doing Friday Early Breakfast on 7th & 14th June.
    • Joel Mitchell is in for Nat on Sunday 9th June.
    • Ore Olukoga is on 13.00-16.00 on Friday 31st May and Friday 7th June.  Nikita Kanda is doing Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June.
    • Very pleased for producer Amy - it's no coincidence many of the best shows in recent years have had her working on them. You can tell her & Helena are a great production duo and that the whole Matt & Mollie team are a really close-knit unit in general. Some lovely speeches by both Matt & Mollie too to end the show on Sunday.
    • Echo what most have said here. Connor has great energy which is important for that sort of slot and the shame for him is that the dance line-up is so strong that there's no obvious 'in' for him to get a regular slot -Danny, Sarah, Pete Tong, Arielle, Charlie Hedges, Jerry and Charlie Tee are all great in their slots. A live show on Radio 1 Dance really feels the obvious way to get a proper foot in the door at Radio 1. Although to be fair to the DS critic I think it was just the one poster and can very much hear Connor in my head saying 'in for the legend that is Charlie Hedges'.
