Would you pass the 11+?

A collection of old test papers from the 1940s and 50s is being published in a new book. For some people, the thought of the exam will bring back happy memories of success and achievement. For others it inspires dread and disappointment.

Out of eight questions from the old-school 11+, how many can you get right?

I'm quite proud that I got all eight, but it did take me a while and I needed to make notes because I find visualising maths stuff in my head really hard.

I got 7 out of 8. I never did the 11+ although I did do an exam and got into a grammar school when I was 10 so I guess that must have been similar. My area doesn't have any grammar schools but another one fairly nearby does.

I got 7 out of 8 correct.

It's remarkable that the education system of yesteryear could be so callous and unforgiving as to divide children into a tripartite system based solely on academic ability and apparent lack thereof.

Grammar schools in the tripartite system were to be aspired to but were ultimately soulless places where you were given two choices: become a lawyer, a doctor or a teacher et al or drop out. Even though they were at the highest end of the education spectrum, they were by no means nurturing of the talents of the finest individuals under their auspices. Simply put, they were machines for manufacturing societies 'best' people.

It seems 'secondary modern schools' of which today's comprehensives are a vestigial reminder (in building form not practice), were devoid of most academic learning except for basic mathematics. I think that's appalling. Whilst teaching non-academic skills may have seemed like the right choice for 'borderline' pupils such as those, it certainly resulted in most leaving with little or no wider knowledge and understanding of the world.

As for 'technical schools', they're beyond me.

I am truly grateful that I was never subjected to this most rotten system. Whilst I have been critical of our present education system which offers every child an equal opportunity to progress to higher learning or not, whilst imperfect in some respects, is a system that should be maintained and by all means necessary.

I got 7 out of 8 right, and that was because my touch pad was slightly over sensative, but I hadnt worked out the answer yet and so couldnt tell you if I'd have got it right or not.

That did seem very difficult, and I am not sure if I would have had the ability to do it when I was younger. Although I did pass my 11+ exam with a good mark and was offered a secure place at the grammer school (but I didnt take it lol).

I think its easier to do 'tests' when you're little because your brain is conintually taught how to do test subjects. As we get older we rely more on common sense and avoid sitting down doing sums etc. Plus as we develop more technology to help us we as a whole are becoming more lazy. Many people dont know correct grammar because spell checkers correct it, and calculators tackle the most difficult sums.

    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
