BBC or Commericial is there any other stations you may listen to or have done in past or see it would sound so good like people say on here if they did that that show and had that presenter sometimes flick over to stuff like Radio X, 6M, Capital Dance and wondered your thoughts

Do you mean - Which shows from other stations do we consider to be particularly good quality?

Just mean is there any changes you’d make to other stations. But can answer both .

Oooh boy, I could be here all day!

So best just pick one for now - Absolute Radio. Two major annoyances - Too many adverts, and not enough range 'across the decades' on DAB/ MW.   I'd earmark particular one-hour blocks through the week, with no adverts in them. And then further earmark the middle-hours of some three-hour shows a particular decade, on a rota. So a 'no-advert guarantee', 7pm-8pm on Sundays (during request show), for example ... And 5pm-6pm with Bush & Ritchie could be 80's on Mon, 90's on Tues, 00's on Wed, and 10's on Thurs.

seemed likely you planned out well to get good veriety do like their indie disco show that’s on a Saturday may have to tune into the no advert guarantee slots and request more and more tuning to different stations for verity I’d playlist

Greatest Hits Radio: It's good for an hour, here and there, but the '70s, 80s and 90s' rule is way too restrictive. It means they can't even play newer releases by the oldsters, that their audience might like (e.g. Tom Jones). Would be a fine thing just to have an allowance to go 'off-rule' with one track, per show ...

Virgin, Virgin Anthems, Virgin Groove, TalkSport, TalkSport 2, TalkRadio and Times Radio: Way too much indifferent material being churned out by this group. Could easily be condensed down to 'Virgin', 'Virgin 2' and 'Virgin 3'.

I listen to Times and think it works being a distinct station as accompanies the paper found virgin sounded better when it relaunched in 2016 with people like Edith Bowman and Mac Twins and Jamie East had more of a distinct sound as seemed more of a targetted audience base as being a more wedge between Radio 1 and 2 with a more of an indie feel. I do find it’s only riding on the Chris Evans and Graham Norton thing agree a rebrand to be numbered could be good but do find Groove, Chill and Anthems don’t seem quite good at getting an audience in do find it’s odd using Virgin brand when Virgin dont own it. Find talk radio is probably going to struggle with GB News and seems too much of a video output think talk sport is fairly good as only commercial sports station

Absolute-

Fire Berry. Put Bush and Richie (my go to drive show) on breakfast. Keeping newsreaders on air. Fix their guarantee to play different songs each day. Maybe mix in some new stuff with some older stuff a bit better.  Maybe hire someone like Alice Levine to fill their drive time slot.

Virgin-

Stop being a Radio 2 wannabe. Hiring Graham Norton and Chris Evans. I thought their output was good before Evans signed for more money. Their branding is awful. Why use the old virgin name? Anyone who can get Wikipedia knows that’s now Absolute.

HITS-

Hire some bigger more talented names. Fluer East isn’t a good Radio host.  They need to hire someone who’s a big name and good at radio. I feel like Grimmy would be good on breakfast there. And I could also see him doing some sort of throwback show on the pride spin-off station.

Capital-

Simulcast  Coco Cole’s show on the main station as well as Dance. I think their breakfast show team is very charismatic especially Roman and Sian less so Sonny. I don’t listen live but often watch clips they put on Twitter or Instagram. I’d say maybe find a better third wheel there.

Yep, fair enough - Just to be clear though, I'm primarily talking about boiling the best output from the whole group down into three stations .... So the sports coverage could have a home on 'Virgin 2' (or whatever you want to call it) - Likewise, more serious talk spots on '3' could still be sponsored by The Times ....

6Music and Radio 2: I've said this before - and- before anyone jumps in, I do know this is never going to happen! - But this is my fantasy-world of being in charge of everything, so there! .... Greg James for a 'Triple Decker Breakfast' show, simulcasting across Radio 1, Radio 2 and 6Music. With an equal mix of the most perky/ catchy numbers from the current three playlists.

Interesting idea to say the least thought of it before but it would upset and cause mass outrage amongst Radio 2 and 6 Music listeners pwersonally like flcioming over to 6M as bit different to radio 1. At cost cutting and streamlining you’d be a good hire if they wanted to shake things up to cut costs. Don’t think Greg’s a strong presenter to do such thing tho in a decade he maybe on R2 drive or something

Indeed so - We can especially do without constant reminders of artists very few of us cared about, first time round (e.g. Spin Doctors) ...

I kind of like a bit more specialist and niche which think like 6M. Absolute and Rad X should embrace personally think abosolute 20s should rebrand as Absolute New or Absolute fresh something like that with more genres covered.

Honestly sometimes prefer it when Stations are named after what they cover and what you likely to hear but do think wireless global boater etc could have more cohesive brand like BBC would rename the bbc stations and shake up some content to make it feel more of one would call BBCR3 BBC Classical, and BBC 6 Music BBC Music, BBC Radio 1 BBC Radio Y (y standing for youth not 100% but bringing in youth podcasts bbc three of)tent under same brand)

Not entirely related...

but I’ve always wondered why ‘6 Music’ is not ‘Radio 2 Extra’, as it basically is to Radio 2 listeners what 1Xtra, 4 Extra, 5LSX are to their sister stations.

Find 6M is more distinct than BBC R2. Riadio 1 and R1 Xtra have plenty of simulcasts e.g Saturday evenings news beat and overnight slots aswell when the 8th was on and tend to share some songs in playsltis and cover very occasionally shared from both. R 4 Extra mostly repeats recent R4 shows or stuff from R4 archives so nothing distinct and new or original and Sports extra is there fro when there’s two sports things for Radio 5 live to cover or clashes with daytime news programming .

so don’t inteirly see your point the playlists between 2 and 6 are very different few have come from and present on 2 to 6 Craig Radcliffe and Maconie mauve Robinson had but think Radio 2 is heart where as 6M is a more left field and less mainstream Radio X that has stuff for a more younger audience with shows like Blessed Madonna and Artists in Residence, Jamz Supernova, Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs it’s not as much of a same audience as two is when Radio 2 is like Heart mixed with Gretwst Hits Radio

Think if I was BBC Radio head would rebrand the stations but keeping of course the themes of the station try to maybe create a BBC Sounds News (Newsbeat,PM,Your Call,NewsCast,Today etc) BBC Sounds Sport, BBC Sounds Talk (original entertainment and topical factual stuff like R4 comedy, dramas and Scott and Chris’s 5L show and Eli’s and John show), BBC Sounds New Music (Clara Amfo, Jack Saunders, Jamz Supernova, Gemma Bradley, DJ Target, Regional intro presenters etc, Benji B some other 6M presenters) BBC Sounds Good (what Radio 2 is mainly upbeat pop adult contemporary playlist incl the Mills switch

Interesting concept, although I'd still want to keep the traditional '1,2,3' etc on the actual stations, mixing it up a bit on BBC Sounds could encourage more adventurous listening, for those who are a little stuck in their ways ... That said, and going off-piste again for a moment - I would have kept BBC3 on television, but re-named it 'BBC Fun & Games' - making it the home of all sport and quiz shows ...

Kind of - but to make that more plausible, a '2 Extra' would need to re-adopt some of the 'pre-rock' material that R2 has been quietly abandoning for years ....

Sounds like what would’ve worked with listeners as would allow to explore niches and providing public service broadcasting doesnt export its older or less mainstream listener

I find there’s definatley more of a trend of switching the dial these days and think having stations where would get news stuff or sport stuff news music etc when you want that could encourage people to switch cross station and could say that e.g if want some of that flick over to different bbc station encourage cross listening. Sort of get what you mean fun and games title probably wouldn’t probably by marketing teams what final name would be but interesting consept I think what they could do interms of that content maybe devise televison stations based on more different categories again

On the televison note could go to doing channels with called BBC Culture featuring music shied and stuff from archive different live events coverage of proms Mercury Prize, Literature shows like  Sara Coxes one gesture stand up comedy art competition shows and Bbc films and homegrown cultural content. Think I mean BBC Two could is more of a light entertainment channel but feel BBC Two or One could allow for more regional output on prime time slots and more original national focused on other

All in all (with a handful of exceptions), BBC4 is what BBC2 should be --- BBC2 is what BBC1 should be --- Ergo: BBC1 is pointless (sometimes literally 'Pointless').

I agree but feel like it’s pointless with bbc two day times they playing bbc one archive content from past few years or simulcast the news channel feel bbc two sometimes does more psb services but would be better if there was one focused on playing original national content and one original regional and local focused

    • Jordan North… Seriously though, out of the commercial stations I only really listen to Capital but I do think Will Manning is very strong (and could quite easily slot into R1). I also think Jimmy Hill is a very good commercial DJ (but probably wouldn’t be as good on R1).
    • First link made me blush
    • Who do you think is the best commercial presenter? This is your view, doesn't have to be who has the most ratings
    • Starting off strong.
    • I remember Chase and Status being added to the line-up for Coventry after a drop out. At the time it seemed a bit random, but they seem massive again now!
    • That is a bit strange, yes. Fair point. Oh yes, I'd say both are equal. It's just they'll have been on Instagram for some time, whereas TikTok will have been a new addition in recent years, so something probably has to give. Us anoraks like to see Twitter as important, but I find myself putting much more time into those other platforms. Incidentally when I applied for a social job there probably four years back (wasn't successful!) I did say I thought the audience wanted more insight from the station rather than just content around the stars. I think they've moved a lot more in that direction, especially with the visualisation in the studio. You see more of Greg James than Harry Styles. I don't envy the PR machine at Radio 1 going straight from Mollie King's challenge to Big Weekend announcements without a break!
    • Since they starting the big weekend right at the end of Matt & Mollie’s show I expect they get to do the duties of opening up the festival.
    • Matt and Mollie and Sam and Danni have DJ sets on Friday of Big Weekend, still makes me think they are really keen to push both pairings in a hole left by Jordan.
    • Broadcast wise it’s going to be interesting to see how they handle the performances starting at the same time as the chart show.
    • Yes sort of, although it’s still weird that they tweeted when Mollie was halfway completed but did not do so when she crossed the finish line.
    • it would make sense to ensure both instagram and TikTok are treated as equals and kept in tandem as reels and downloads of instagram are growing when TikTok I think I’ve heard is stagnating.    I mean it makes sense to do less with Twitter or X as it has change. There has been a lot of change in how its run and operate with focus on making it a platform people pay for and its been volatile for advertising with lots of loss in paid promotions on the platform and the business worth has been waining and any communications and marketing for any business and organisations are seeing that
    • I feel like all ATB songs started with some sort of airport in their video
    • Brings back some memories. Your Call for the second hour between 5 and 5.45! The disappointment when someone would call in asking for James Blunt which was already on the playlist.
    • Previously during Red Nose Day events or summer games they tweeted more than now. This year they tweeted less but still highlighted lots of tweets from listeners on the R1 live blog.
