Moyles Not On The Payroll

Loudmouth Chris Moyles has been taken off the BBC payroll while his future remains undecided after losing his Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

The controversial DJ was once one of the Beeb’s biggest stars — but he hasn’t worked for them since sulkily signing off on September 14, despite being on a £1 million, two-year contract meant to keep him on air until 2014.

Instead, Moyles, 38, has been earning significant money for outside work, including the release of an album, hosting a dating show for Sky Living and appearing in the arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. BBC chiefs, reeling from Director-General George Entwistle’s expensive payoff this week, ruled Moyles will not be paid until he agrees a new job.

Even then, I’m told it’s likely he’ll be forced to take a significant pay cut. Moyles has yet to agree his next move with Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper, who wants to make the station appeal to younger listeners. Moyles was replaced by Nick Grimshaw, 28.

Radio 1 is keeping the 10pm slot, for years occupied by John Peel, available for Moyles. But a source tells me: ‘The longer Chris delays, the more likely it is he won’t return at all. If he thinks he can walk back next year on £1 million to do a lower-profile show, he’s mistaken.’

I previously revealed Moyles might land a show on Radio 5 Live, but that’s been resisted by some staff at the news station who dismiss him as a ‘brash entertainer’. Moving to Radio 2 is another possibility.

A BBC spokesman says: ‘Chris stepped down from the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in September and has since been working on other projects. He is not being paid by Radio 1 while he’s not on air.’
