The DJ Chris Evans, who was attacked as “too manic” when he took over Sir Terry Wogan’s breakfast slot on BBC Radio 2 in January, has proved his critics wrong. He has increased audiences for the show by as much as 10% to 9m, according to Rajar listening figures to be released on Thursday.

Moyles sets new record

Chris Moyles has set a new record as the latest figures show he is pulling in 7.88 million listeners at breakfast.

He's helped the station gain a high of 11.74 million listeners per week in the quarter, compared to 10.76m last quarter and 11.07m last year.

Moyles fans were expecting him to have the number one breakfast show after Wogan's exit, but with Evans increasing the Radio 2 audience, this looks highly unlikely.

Other BBC services have also done well, Radio 3 has a weekly reach of 2.03 million listeners – up from last year’s 1.99m and last quarter’s 1.87m. The network’s share is 1.2 per cent (up from 1.1% both last year and last quarter).

Radio 4’s reach is 10.03m, up from last year (9.98m) and last quarter (9.84m). Share is 12.2 per cent, down slightly from 12.5% last quarter and last year.

BBC Radio 5 live – this week named Station of the Year at the Sony Radio Academy Awards – posted a record combined reach with sister station 5 live sports extra of 6.56 million listeners – compared to 6.32m last year and 6.19m last quarter. Share for Radio 5 live (inc. sports extra) is 4.7 per cent - from 4.6 per cent last quarter and 4.8 per cent last year.

Curses, I thought Evans would see a drop. I think it would be likely that Radio 2 is now becoming the place for a generation that listens to the radio more. So I think Evans is fortunate to be coming in at a time when more people are listening to Radio 2. I'm sure there'll be some curious listeners adding up to those figures.

Axe-threatened digital station BBC 6 Music has seen a nearly 50% increase in its audience to a record 1 million listeners, according to the latest radio industry figures.

Published today, official RAJAR data for the three months to March 28 reveals that the station grew its weekly reach to 1.02m from 695,000 the previous quarter.

The station's growth in popularity was largely down to a high-profile campaign to save it from closure next year under BBC director general Mark Thompson's strategy review.

6Music, as predicted, doing very well.

Long weekend with my boys in Germany, week in Bangor with Moyles & Co next week..oh, and half a million new listeners to the show. Happy boy

But seriously, Moyles is the man! He simply must get a new contract with these figures. Others survive a year or two, but Moyles is at his best after seven years. Congrats and respect!
