Wow she's getting all over TV again, that woman.. first The Gadget Show reviewing music download services (my favourite service of choice got 4Gs out of 5, I think), now this... shame this clashes with the Gadget Show, but I can iplayer this Who says the licence fee isn't paying for anything worthwhile

Interesting that the DJs moved out of the weekday slots have now become fascinated with the power of TV. Co-incidence?? Mmmmmm.

Well if they now have time to film stuff, why not? Whiley's old slot wasn't exactly ideal for having her film stuff that could take an entire day, same with the lunchtime and afternoons.

I'm just thinking cynical thoughts: I mean, if the radio stuff goes altogether, they'll have neatly slotted themselves into tv. :-)

I don't think it will quite happen for Whiley though, aside little guest appearances talking about music or in behind-the-scenes docos about Doctor Who. Much rather hear her on a surviving and thriving 6Music really, back to what she made her name doing on Radio 1.

Not if the BBC Trust listen to all the campaigns that are going on to save it... it's not the DGs decision and it's still up for 'consultation' last I heard. Optimism :tup: It's not something I have bouts of too often, but in this case, for whatever reason, I do.

It was a really interesting programme. Jo did a really good job, I think my favourite fact was that people that download illegally actually spend more money on legal downloads and music at about £77 a year, than people that only download legally who spend about £46 annually!

But what really confused me was how the police and internet providers intend to trace illegal downloads. They talked about tracing the IEP address or something similar, and penalising the account holder, which made me wonder how wireless connections work.

I admit to not being a computer expert, so I wondered how they will stop errant teenagers with laptops etc from tapping into different wireless connections, Like a group of students sitting there with their laptops connected into the next door neighbours wireless connection, whose internet address comes up if pirated materials is then downloaded?

next doors connection would be blocked, and thats where this law is flawed.... that and the European court of human rights deemed it illegal....

Yep and the record companies continue to whinge about how they're 'losing out' so badly... same as the movie studios who bring out movies that break (and by break I mean absolutely trample) previous records and complain the same thing... I mean hasn't the new Alice movie already beaten the point Avatar was at this long after release?

Find it strange that it's the artists that have made their millions and have had massive backing from record labels are the ones who have no problem with people dowloading for free.they don't care as long as they are ok they could'nt give a toss about new artists who need the record labels.

Yeah but how many newer artists are now going down the Myspace route or being completely independent? If anything from what I can tell it's the ones who have made the millions who DO have a problem with downloading, aside from Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails etc. Anyone remember Lily Allen's rant and how she said she was quitting music over it?

I'm not so sure artists DO actually need greedy record labels who take the lion's share of the profit and give artists very little anymore. Hell I used to work with a guy who was in a band and he said he'd rather give away the actual music online etc and make the money from touring, and that's by no means something he's alone on. It's the record companies that have the problem even though they're still raking it in, and if they tell one of their artists (Lily Allen, for example) to speak out against it, possibly with threats to their contract etc, is it any surprise we have these artists conveniently speaking out.

I'm also sure it doesn't need to be said yet again that downloading would probably be cut if they brought down the prices. Itunes has helped somewhat with this.

Fallacy.

There's plenty of millionaire artists who want such bills passed worldwide so that they can make more money (even though they won't - the bill won't force people to buy music, it'll just push them away from music, full stop).

And there are also a lot of new artists emerging with a brain who realise that you can make money because of your music rather than just from your music. If a new artist feels they NEED a big record label, they're a f*cking idiot who don't deserve to release music.

i think that if you write the music yourself & can play the instruments a artiest /band can still make money, its the x-factor ones who are worst off as they don't write anything (cannot sing most of the time).

i dunno there are some big bands who like to get on their high horse about downloading U2 are one & (cannot remember the name) some big American band the lead singer (i think it was) was going on about if you have his music for free then if he has to call a plumber out then that plumber should fix his sink for free also (he was saying this whilst sat next to a huge swimming pool in the grounds of a huge house {may have been his i dunno})
