This news put me in a sad mood. I had a suspicion that Chris having to sign a  contract, to stay on the TPC podcast, with a commercial broadcaster might lead to a split eventually and I did always wonder if both would go together, but never expected it to come to this so soon. Going to this miss these two on R1, and more importantly the content.
Greg's show still feels likes it's pandering to kids of a pre-TikTok age, RM&C feels a bit too chaotic and V&J for me just isn't natural enough yet.
Hope Katie Thistleton gets the slot instead of Dean, but I feel instinctively the bosses will do the opposite.
Oh well. Times were good whilst they lasted.

    Very good point.
Radio 1 is developing talent for the entire radio industry right now.

I find Jack Saunders better at future sounds and music shows than Clara Amfo. She has some passion but not strong enough as a music curating presenter breathing new and exciting sounds to platform the next generation of music talent.

I like your thinking. A co host each week could be quite fun.
As well as using to test new hosts out.

I think if there was ever to be a return of the evening entertainment show may do it in something like ‘the 8th’ but would tend to go maybe with one permanent presenter and different co-host for each week with different regular and reoccurring talent going for new and emerging comedic talent and some established names maybe people who may produce content for BBC’s comedy social media channels. Comedians with experiences doing podcasting or more guesting if more digital comedy talent. Maybe a show with purpose of some rest breaks within the year to trial different pilot ideas or seasonal music shows maybe if say round post big weekend if wanted to reflect festival highlights in such a slot or do some dance shows around Ibiza weekend and some summer weeks

For me, it’s the playlist, the presenters and the news output.
Radio 1 has a much wider and more varied playlist than its commercial rivals, and I love the fact that they devote more airtime to smaller artists, many of whom just aren’t being played by competing stations.
The presenters on Radio 1 are given greater freedom to be themselves on air, rather than having to stick to short and sometimes very infrequent links, which greatly reduces the personality of a presenter in my opinion. Listeners are therefore much more able to connect with presenters, and are often featured as part of their shows. Greg in particular features listeners for much of his show, which is what makes it such a fun and entertaining listen.

Newsbeat provides regular bulletins which make the news of the day to more accessible to young people, without any patronisation. Radio 1 are the only radio station I know of that air two long-form (ie longer than 2/3 minutes) news bulletins each weekday, which is therefore a unique service.
Overall, Radio 1 know how to make radio interesting and exciting for a generation of people who have many options when it comes to entertainment, and are succeeding at getting them to listen.

I find with Scott he did drive for a while one of the major shows. I think one thing that helped him he never presented breakfast show full time and never been a full time presenter of that show. I think breakfast radio can be a poisoned challace no digs in anyway it’s difficult craft to master as points in Greg James, Nick Grimshaw etc breakfast career hit moments of exhaustion and burnout of the difficult hours of if. A lot more pressure.
Think with it doesn’t leave great deal of space to keep things fresh after so many years.
Think it’s an end of chapter most time if switch from that slot

I only see OJ on daytime radio 2 if was early breakfast or for few weeks interim before a new daytime show was to launch like how Chris Hawkins did before Craig Charles launched his show. Wouldn’t be surprised if several years down the line OJ ended up on commercial

Agree with keeping indie on Thursdays. Think he has the right audience for then I’d think Sunday
    SUNDAY
Group Chat (rename it from lifehacks keep it broad) 16:00-18:00 maybe launch a podcast that goes with it again and would be released through the week with bits of Newsbeat and any extra bits of conversations or segments that could create news, topical, lifestyle and investigative segments and series for R1 audience. Katie solo but with regular co-hosts to chat on certain topics and issues. Sometimes also with BBC Three TV specials that would be on there and podcast only under same name.
Chart First Look 18:00-18:30 just half an hour is probably better w/M.King
    Future Pop with/M.King 18:30-20:00
    Future Soul 20:00-22:00
Radio 1’s Chillest Show back to 22:00-01:00
BBC Introducing would move to Wednesday 22:00-23:00

Yes think one reservation do find that Jack Saunders should be on as the first presenter of the evening when future sounds programming kicks in the right energy that would work when people are getting home from work or making tea to. Sort of energy that would build up rest of evenings programming.

I think by the seems of it September is now annually the month of actually reflecting touching up the station and making some altercations. I can see it as bit stability in managerial team to sort of plan to look of content where the station can say that doesn't work great at x time need more of this. By this lay out I imagine September 2023 may see potentially some changes in overnight programming whether thats just making changes to content after 1 AM or if some small changes to weekends. Maybe September 2024 will be the closest to next potential window of change to daytime or any major slots.

@Jonoi think rock and indie music comes around in cycles comes back bit different each time felt like the sort of late 00’s and tens period was very edmey and rap I mean when Stormzy began to breakthrough rap and grime was on a lot with what ever Calvin Harris, dancy tracks on playlists.  I also think may seeing Rock and Indie coming back into fashion as they are very emotive genres they tend to respond to the times of the day. Whether its experiences of racism, mental health and trauma, sexuality, covid, more unrest and more unpredictable right now. If theres a challenging time in the world we live in art responds. I mean in the hardest of times its art comes at a different quality. Reflecting the culture at the minute.

@R1Fan1 It’s disappointing that they don’t have presenters giving facts about the years music they are playing conversations around the memories listeners would have round then adding bit of creative responses to said anecdotes and get the presenters to drop one or two interesting, funny relevant anecdotes to music playing. Some sort of text topic. I mean it would’ve been good if this week for different chuck some live longe sessions or Maida Vale sessions to make things interesting or a yesteryear quiz as an alternative yesterday quiz.
Think the presenters should be encouraged to give listeners facts about them or allow listeners to suggest questions to presenters to build a rapour

I agree. The late night specialist stuff is good. I don’t like the heavy hip hop focused stuff after dark. I’d be happier if we just get more varied playlists- maybe a few sweary songs mixed in with the rest of the playlist.

I find it rather baffling that with the pandemic other stations are able to find the resources to get last minute presenters and stand in within days even with low production resources. Is it somehow bit difficult for a music station like radio 1 I’m surprised theres no one that is available id just start breakfast bit earlier possibly end it earlier to pre pandemic times if was stuck with that dilemma. Do find selecting purely Radio 1 Dance shows is bit of a cop out on Christmas period. Maybe air some Christmas playlists from BBC Sounds or any other BBC Sounds mixes. It seems that since the new schedule for duo and trio pairings have lead to presenting dilemmas

I don't think it's where they want their social media direction to go, but I honestly still will keep saying I think more behind-the-scenes stuff is what they should be doing. Facebook Live and Instagram Live from Radio 1 Out Out, content from the shows. It's what will make them stand out over their rivals, rather than just Harry Styles and BTS content. At the end of their day their aim is to have people listening to the station, not doing what Capital does. I'd love to have seen Charlie Hedges' DJ set at Out Out for example.. it was left to the DJs Instagram feeds to offer glimpses.

I think it was mentioned at the start of the week that Matt Edmondson is solo this weekend. Best New Pop I assume is recorded later in the week, so it's easier to keep the Friday early breakfast host on for an extra half hour to do it live. Either way, whatever reason they're off, it's their business.
