Weird topic is this but its something i was talking about briefly in work today, would you want to go into this type of work knowing the stats of the numbers of dcotors and and NHS carers been attacked on the job? 8 out of 10 nurses have been attacked in some form in the last year. Would that put you off if you was interested in becoming a nurse or a doctor or just a general carer?

Amen to that, and the staff shortage is getting deeper as well. The attacks on A&E staff are mainly from drunks and people on drugs. The attacks on the actual wards are from dementia patients who are basically lost and its almost an instinct

I feel sorry for nurses TBO, having drunk people spewing up all over them, being attacked and also underpaid for what they do. Little wonder there is a shortage of medical staff if that is the way they are treated really, is it?

There is too many men in suits in hospitals my dad reckons. Walking around doing nothing, thats what he he sees anyway when he goes there to fit x-ray lead lined protection screens. Mabie get rid of some of them and get some more nurses and doctors in who do work...

Would never become a nurse .... wouldn't have patience with any of the hooligans that come into A & E. Would have to give them a piece of my mind. Also don't like blood. Guess this rules me out.

It isn't a career I've ever considered, so on that basis, probably not.

I have the utmost respect for nurses though (and more or less anyone involved in the medical profession) - you do a great job and deserve more pay.

cant say I can stand the site of real blood either Viv. Had to make the following note to myself as listed below after twice requiring a visit to A & E.

Note to self : when cutting paper into a size watch where you place fingers on ruler when using stanley knife.

I couldn't do it, I'm way too impatient and can't work well under stress. And in psychology we're talking about shift work and it doesn't sound too fun and I probably wouldn't adjust well to it.

No i couldnt do it,not only do i have a fear of needles and blood and so on..i dont think i could be able to work shifts.

after starting my placement...emm...im not sure i wanna be a nurse anymore!! but who knows maybe ill change my mind, some aspects of it i like...but most of it..i do not like!!

I dont think i would become a nurse but thats just because its not something im intrested in but i think the nurses we do have are great :biggrin:

Its not all its cracked up to be. I love my job alot and i like the people i work with, but the work load is heavy, and the expectations are very high as well. Linz, i can speak to you on MSN about it more, but what thinks put you off?

john...it was abit of the shock to the system i think,it wasnt what i expected at all and it really opened my eyes...aspects i dont like...erm all the "dirty" jobs...abusive patients....the neglect that i see....

I am a 3rd Year student nurse. All the time during my course I have questioned if I actually want to do the job I am training for. I can honestly say I still don't know. At the moment where I am there are no newly qualified jobs, so am looking on a wider scale, Or I might just move!

But the 700 odd people in my year are still going through with it. Nursing like any job can be stressful, Before I started my training my background was in customer service, Call centres and cash processing. It was a massive shock to my system, I too doubted it but I can assure you things get better the more you progess in your training (except my english!) Being a 1st year sucks you feel like a spare part but once you get through your first placement it gets more interesing

Welcome to the forum! The NHS is certainly more than just nursing and quite good for ICT

Yep the NHS is excellent for healthcare and i feel is just as good as private healthcare.

and ofcourse its paid for by your taxes so why bother spending more on healthcare than necessary?

I've worked with many many students as an auxilarry and the 1st year is usually a tough year for a student because you are learning just basic nursing skills, but the only way to get recognised and to get the experience is to muck in and get your hands dirty just like the regular staff do because that is what you will be doing in 3 years time when you qualify

one word: no. i dont really like all the gooey bloody stuff and i would have to study biology, chemistry and physics for AS and A-levels i think. Chemistry is by far enough, and im dropping it after this year :biggrin:
