He presents a weekly specialist show dealing with people's problems and has done so for all of... what, a year now?

With the greatest respect to Aled, that's no recommendation for potential breakfast show material, no matter how little the stint is. Surely if you were going to take someone from the show to present it, Comedy Dave is more suited to the role. Aled has been the joke character ridiculed for most of his time there - to move from that into the dominant anchor role just doesn't work at all, especially overnight. Plus, he has producer duties to be concerned with.

I don't think it's going to happen though.

He also presents the shows in Wales. I found the birthday half hour they did a while back quite amusing having the team by his side. I wouldn't see the problem - it makes no difference to having someone else come in?

The birthday half hour was clearly designed to be a joke show and wouldn't have been nearly as good without the gimmicked nature of it; the game, the amateurness of it, the constant teasing by the other members of the team. It wasn't a real show and was certainly not a show to base any future possibilities of Aled presenting in a more serious tone.

And it very clearly does make a difference to have someone come in because Vernon, who usually comes in, is actually a very good presenter who carries himself like a star which is what a show of this magnitude needs. Aled, in the context of the show, is the likeable but dimwitted, almost childlike-in-his-innocence producer who often serves as the comic relief for people to make fun of as they see fit. Now that's just a character and not representing his presenting abilities, but it would be like continuing Father Ted after Dermot's death and making Mrs. Doyle the lead character; Pauline McLynn is a fantastic actress but Mrs. Doyle is the weird housekeeper used as comic relief to the serious and level-headed nature of Father Ted. To make her the lead character would require a complete reworking of the character and by that point, what's the point? Especially if, by some complete fluke of nature, Father Ted returns the week after to take back the role.

And again, maybe this is just me, but I don't think Aled has the talent nor the aura to carry the second biggest show in the country for longer than half an hour. This isn't some two-bit f*ck-all nothing show on local radio; this is the breakfast show on Radio One and it deserves at least a bit of respect, which is why I refuse to believe that Aled is presenting the show. I flat-out refuse to believe that they'd ridicule the show to that level when there are so many better choices, including one on their very own show team. And I'm sure that even Aled himself would agree that he's not the right choice to anchor the show.

Aled's a great producer and a good presenter of The Surgery. Leave it at that.

am I right in thinking max is usually the stand in for aled? I'm not too keen on max's style of presenting when I've heard her covering for Dev, and previously Greg. I dont listen to the surgery but I'd hope for R1's sake this isnt a permanant thing.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure I heard Moyles and co talking about her having nearly entered into an argument with Aled about people checking out people when they're in a relationship. To me the surgery should really be presented by someone with an open mind, and from having listened to Aled's appearances on the breakfast show he seems much more open minded to other peoples opinions etc etc

Not impressed with censorship

Yeah, Aled's perfectly suited for the type of show that the Surgery is, because he's perfectly fine at being fair-minded, calm and friendly, and letting the specialists do their thing and be the experts. The questions that he asks them are fairly simple but it's the tried and tested formula that works the world over. I've made the comparison before, but it's like the UK version of Loveline, except that Adam Carolla was ever so slightly more involved than Aled (and more likely to interject with jokes and personality - Aled knows his place and doesn't overshadow the real issues, whereas Carolla was prone to do so sometimes, for better or worse).

I just don't think that it's wise to transition that kind of presentation towards the breakfast show. Aled hasn't even truly definied himself with the Surgery yet, and could end up doing so and making the show his own in the way that very few are able to. I'd say that's more important, especially for the station and the remit.

Yes. As well as being a naturally sensitive, intelligent individual, having experienced a LOT himself (overcoming the bullies, just as an example).

Like any person who has overcome trauma, it will make them more sensitive towards other people and their issues, and less judgemental. Hence, the perfect person for a Surgery-type show!! The sort of person which people can naturally tell things to!!

Aled's currently the brightest star in the Universe.

    • I see Katie (and Mairead) were out with Jordan tonight.  I don’t listen to the show any longer, I am shocked they are allowed to mention Jordan.
    • At least I do not ask stupid questions…😂
    • I suggest you follow the other DJs too if so, you will learn the hardest working will go further 🤣
    • A simple check on his instagram would answer all your questions , he’s on tour with his wife and the team behind his podcast. I suggest anyone to follow the radio presenters, you will learn a lot about their other jobs and work commitments.
    • Where is Jamie? It felt like he was settling in when Vick wasn’t on but he’s not been on since last Tuesday now. They’ve not even mentioned him, in fact they’ve mentioned Jordan more than they’ve mentioned him in the last two days.
    • Scott's show is on the road next week, live from Malmö in Sweden on Wednesday and Friday, ahead of Eurovision. As he's doing the semi final coverage on the TV on Tuesday and Thursday alongside Rylan, Gary Davies sits in for him on those days.
    • I don't feel there's so much overlap between M&M and Scott's shows. M&M is of a similar calibre to Scott & Chris on R1, with genuine laugh out loud moments and usually a show packed full of real interesting content. Scott's R2 show is IMO a shadow of the stuff he did on R1 (not his fault, he's doing exactly what station management want), with music and content to appeal to a much older audience.
    • To be fair, Scott & Chris would've still been fine on Radio 1. It was mentioned at the time that Scott's move was very much on Radio 2's part rather than Radio 1 wanting to move them on. That's the one problem that Radio 2 has, trying to appeal to such a wide demographic.. it's the perfect listen for many, but equally a turn off for many others. I think they have the balance fairly right.
    • I agree Scott has always been a good standalone presenter, but always better when with someone. When chappers left the radio one show it felt a different show and Chris joining was what it needed and brought new life. for the format of the radio 2 show Scott’s show fits well with the station but again, there’s the huge gap between radio1 and 2 As been said already old radio2 listeners feel it now feels too young with latest changes, yet old radio1 listeners still feel radio 2 feels too old. The inbetween stage demographic of too old for radio 1 but too young for radio 2 is still not catered for radio 2 was left to grow old with its audience for too long and to change things up now feels to try and change a brand image the right thing to do is leave it as it is and cater for that 1.5 demographic which I’m sure the new proposed 00s and 10s station will do if approved. Problem is it’s so overdue that by the time it gets off the ground these listeners are already likely to be lost and the changing image of radio2 likely to lose what it stands for as a brand with the “it’s too young now “  moving to boom and the “ it still sounds old “ crowd not able to move with their favourite presenters like Scott so finding themself on capital a radio 1.5 would have been perfect for Scott and Chris, seems unlikely but this is why I think who branding of bbc radio needs a rethink if these new stations get off ground
    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
