Mike Read: BANKRUPT

Former Radio 1 DJ Mike Read has been forced to sell his £1m record collection after going bankrupt.

The 62-year-old handed over 350 boxes of vinyl when he went bust for a second time earlier this year owing thousands in unpaid taxes.

The DJ’s collection of 120,000 discs have an auction guide price of £750,000, but is expected to fetch about £1m.

Read was first declared insolvent last year, but the order was annulled after he paid cash owed to Horsham Council.

But in February he was made bankrupt at Colchester County Court.

An insolvency practitioner has now taken legal control of his assets.

Valuation expert Hugh Thomson said: 'This is easily the most exciting vinyl collections to come on to the market in years.

'We have six experts working round the clock on it. Any big name in music over the past 60 years has been included.'

He revealed there were more than 100 rare Motown demos by artists such as Marvin Gaye.

Read has collected records since well before he made his breakthrough on a local station in Reading in 1976, where he spent a short time before joining Radio Luxembourg.

He devoted a wing in his house to his collection, which also heavily features music of the Sixties, with The Shadows and Cliff Richard known to be among his favourites.

The Icicle Works might also be in there, if tabloid claims about how he liked to spend his 'downtime' with the fairer sex are to be believed.

He joined Radio 1 a short while later and in 1981 took over the Breakfast Show, where he pulled in 17million listeners and famously sent Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax to No.1 after refusing to play it having listened to the rude lyrics.

After leaving the corporation, Read found work for stations such as Capital, Jazz FM and Classic FM and made an appearance on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.

He suffered an even more uncomfortable time than most, viewing it - as most viewers did - a major step down from shows of his past such as Saturday Superstore and Pop Quiz.

His career failed to get the required boost that the show has provided for others and before long Read's famous voice was gracing Spirit FM, Magic, Big L 1395 and latterly the internet station Wight FM and Star 107.5 covering Glouchestershire and the Malverns.

Fans will be stunned however that someone such a prolific author can have run out of money.

In his own right he is the author of 35 books, the most current being Forever England a new biography of Rupert Brooke.

He was also one of the founder editors of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, the best-known UK chart reference book, which has sold in its millions.

He has just completed his first crime novel and is currently working on a second.

Read today refused to comment on his bankruptcy.

God. I am sooo sorry to hear this. I remember him well from the 80s when he was always in the papers then. :-(

How will I sleep.

That's not funny..... in his time, he was happening!!

He once had a stalker who went around telling people she was married to him. She even had T-shirts done up!!

Probably one of Jono's family.

Oh don't be so modest Viv. Don't be embarrassed about your past.

It's a very interesting topic.

You know, I thought he looked more and more bad-tempered as the years went on. When he went into "I'm A Celeb" he was very cross - privately, he must have been really worrying about things.

I could actually sit and cry reading this. I am so sorry to hear this, I really am.

"he famously sent Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax to No.1 after refusing to play it having listened to the rude lyrics".

I remember this too - I didn't even notice the bloody lyrics at the time. Talk about being innocent.

What does that mean? They seem to be an all male group...

Give it 20 years, we'll all be on "Unofficial Greg" by then :P

Rather we'll all be asking 'who's Greg James?' long before Mills is retired from R1. I give James 18 months max, before listeners numbers fall to unacceptable levels.
