I was watching this documentary on PBS. It was talking about what happens to thrown away computers. Computers from all over the world end up mostly in Ghana. There are huge landfills, and children burn the computers to melt the parts and salvage metal, and they are exposed to toxic fumes. Many of the computers still have everything on them! One hard drive had classified NASA data! (they turned it in to the FBI)

so be careful when disposing of that old laptop. we have a Windows 3.1 diskette drive one that was lurking in the attic. I can barely run it cause I'm not familiar with the system!

if you're scrapping a computer just drill a hole in the hard drive / smash it up.

Simple.

We just got rid of a old hard drive - it must have been made of titanium or something. We struggled to drill through it and that was with a hammer drill.

i'm going to wipe everything completley off this computer and put windows xp back on it when i get my new one, it seems to run fine with that. we have a spare monitor & keyboard, all we need is a mouse and a computer stand and it will go in the spare room for mum to use.
