I need a geek!

OK, I just came up with the most epic idea for a thread. Basically, everytime someone on here needs help with something, and I mean, anything, Post in here, and a geek will come and "rescue" you from your "geeky crisis", this being geek world and all. Hehe.

So, whether it be from Computers to social encounters, ask a geek, and they may save you. :P

Anyway I'm in need of a geek: I want to upgrade windows from inside windows if you get my drift. As in, I want to use the "Install now" thing on the Windows 7 disc to upgrade my current version of Vista to 7, but I need to know if it'll take out all my programs before I do it, so I can make arrangements. Ta =]

I take it you'll wait 4 days until the Release Candidate (i.e. final beta) of 7 is released on May 5th before bothering? It's free for a year if you decide to hang onto it...

I haven't done what you're intending, but you may be lucky. Just plan on not being and make sure you have good backups first. Oh, and if you're still dual booting to Ubuntu 9.04 don't expect that to boot again after the upgrade without some serious fiddling.

It won't remove your programs but good luck upgrading it to the full version once it's out because Microsoft are being incredibly stingy with BETA to RC to Full Release upgrading.

If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend both backing up your files (with an external hard drive) and partition your main hard drive. I assume you have done this since you've mentioned Ubuntu. Then just fresh install Win7 to its own section and move everything over. I really wouldn't recommend completely overwriting Vista at all. If anything goes wrong, and bare in mind it's still a limited-time unfinished OS, you'd be up shit creek.

I've just started using Firefox, i've been told it is much more reliable. Is there a way of uninstalling my old internet explorer for the sake of space?

You can, but then other programs will not work correctly (unless there is away of sorting that out I don't know of any yet), windows live is one.

  • 2 weeks later...

as i have sorted my open office issue, maybe there could be a hidden help area for people to post for help, that cannot be viewed when not logged in to save people asking the same thing over & over again.

one thread for firefox, one for itunes, one for open office & one for virus issues etc to keep it organized.

:)

Thing is though, this is a Scott Mills forum, there are other forums specifically for technology-related problems where there are likely to be more people who can help. Google is usually a good place to start with a computer problem as it's likely someone else will have had it too.
