As summer vacation begins, 17 girls at Gloucester High School are expecting babies—more than four times the number of pregnancies the 1,200-student school had last year. Some adults dismissed the statistic as a blip. Others blamed hit movies like Juno and Knocked Up for glamorizing young unwed mothers. But principal Joseph Sullivan knows at least part of the reason there's been such a spike in teen pregnancies in this Massachusetts fishing town. School officials started looking into the matter as early as October after an unusual number of girls began filing into the school clinic to find out if they were pregnant. By May, several students had returned multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and on hearing the results, "some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Sullivan says. All it took was a few simple questions before nearly half the expecting students, none older than 16, confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. Then the story got worse. "We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy," the principal says, shaking his head.

Thats small town america for ya although given the teenage pregnancy rates in this country don't think we're too far behind the US(I think we beat them on underage drinking/drug taking). It's just insane to have a pregnancy pact you would think and as for boffing a homeless man just ewww.

Yes, bringing up children together is a good idea. But at 16 and with a homeless man? What on earth.

i can imagine why he is shaking his head. it's sad but true that girls from 16 to mid 20's would go for that type.

That is quite worrying. I don't really know what to say. These girls clearly don't know what they're letting themselves in for.

I'm surprised they can get pregnancy tests in school. I'm surprised they didn't start asking questions earlier - if girls are coming in for pregnancy tests more than once, they're clearly doing something wrong.

I once Dj'd a number of Under 18's gig and to be honest, most of the clientele were under 16 ad most 16 & 17 year olds were already blagging their way into clubs anyway. I had to get checked out by the police for it so I'm officially not a danger to children. However the really worrying thing was at the end of the night seeing all the guys outside waiting. I REALLY hope some of them were just very young fathers in the 80's or massively older brothers. It used to make me sick walking past them at the end of the night sometimes.

That said I didn't do the gig for very long as they were all the kind of kids you'd happily throttle to death. Bloody chavs!
