When the Kiss trio were poached for Radio 1, a lot of industry eyebrows were raised at a very successful commercial radio trio (can’t be cheap) at their peak performance being poached for a BBC radio show going out at 9o’clock in the evening, hardly peak programming time, and the assumption was this was a temporary shift to bed them in to the station with an eye on going further on Radio 1, maybe stepping in to fill the void of a departure from Scott Mills or Nick Grimshaw, the logic being that if you were hiring these guys surely it was for daytimes, and probably a higher profile gig like drive or the afternoons.  The question now is, will this ever actually happen?  If not, it seems to me a very strange move to have hired them to leave them to stagnate at nighttime; why would they go for that?

Maybe on a weekend slot, but I don’t see them getting a weekday slot. They’re doing good at 8-10, they’d be restricted if they moved from there.

How so?  You don’t hire big names like that and relegate them to weekends/evenings.

They couldn’t do the FourPlay or some of the Night Night Nonsense if they moved from evenings.

True, but show furniture will always change when you move slots.  This trio held together a successful CHR breakfast show for upwards of 10 years, so it won’t be an issue for them.

I think they meet 3 objectives at R1 and don't see this really changing... Firstly they deliver an on-target show from 8-10 each night, following on from Charlie Sloth whose show they heavily promoted. Secondly they provide a decent option for daytime cover as-needed. Thirdly they have brought Charlie to the station who is a good addition to their dance-presenter roster.

I struggle to see them taking over any other daytime slot - Scott is still at the top of his game, surely Jordan is in pole position for Drive, and not sure they'd fit in anywhere else... Also it's hard to say what the terms were of the 'poaching' - we don't know what their previous contract was like or the outlook, and how much they wanted to come to R1 from a career-goal perspective, so it's impossible to know how much they are really costing...

Shortly after they announced they were leaving Kiss, their big boss there also announced his departure. I don’t think it was a coincidence they took the R1 show once they knew he was off. After all, new bosses like to put a stamp on things & they’d been doing the show for 12 years.

As mentioned above, they would be fine content wise on a daytime show because they did breakfast for so long. But I get the impression (especially when it was 9-11) they enjoy the more risqué side of the show.

The only slot I could see them moving into is 1-4, either weekends or weekends. (Jordan is the obvious choice for Drive & I can’t see Greg or Clara leaving before Scott or Grimmy). But they’re all around 40, so what’s the future for them on R1? Probably no longer than a future would’ve been at Kiss. But I honestly don’t think the UK has a radio station where they’d be on air in 10 years as a trio?

Agree with you their best option may well be 1-4, but then again, maybe they’ll blindside us with an unexpected change.

    • Richie Anderson in for Rylan tomorrow.
    • Mylo and Rosie said at the end of their show today that they would also be on Early Breakfast on Thursday 24th July (even though the schedule still says Dean)
    • James is in for Dean from Monday 11th to Thursday 14th August. Dean is in for Greg from Monday 11th to Friday 15th August. Jaguar is in for Sarah on Friday 15th August.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Alyx on Sunday 13th July.
    • Conor Knight & Lauren Layfield are in for Matt & Mollie on Monday 14th July.  Matt is solo on Tuesday 15th July.  Jerry is in for Mollie between Wednesday 16th & Thursday 24th July.  Maia Beth is covering Future Pop on Wednesday 16th & Wednesday 23rd July. On Sunday 27th July the Chillest Show is reduced to an hour, and 20.00-21.00 is a BBC Proms special with JADE. On Thursday 31st July 18.00-20.00 in place of Jack's show it's the Dance Party Warm-Up with Danny Howard (ahead of the Ibiza weekend).
    • Dean McCullough in for Greg w/c 4th August. James Cusack on EB.
    • Well looks like Mollie is off all month now so presumably a personal matter.
    • Intrigued why Matt & Mollie aren't presenting breakfast on Monday, with James in for them instead (which has happened before).. or even James given a chance to present the breakfast show?
    • Sam & Danni seem to be down for Breakfast on Monday. James Cusack on Going Home. That’s another new name in the list of “people who have hosted Going Home in 2025”.
    • Wednesday, surely? But this is another mess, as this weeks Summer press release said it’ll be Sam & Danni no Jamie from the 28th - so it’s actually a whole week earlier!
    • Jamie Laing’s last show before his summer break will be on Wednesday 16th July.
    • I worked out once Scott spent 3 months of a year off his own slot in the Moyles days and more like 4 in Grimmys days, six weeks of his own holiday and projects, six covering Grimmy plus some ad hoc days
    • Back on topic, I think there's quite a few of the current Radio 1 presenters who would be able to adapt to Radio 2's style in the future. It's more of question of how many of them will actually end up there. With much of R2's line up changed over the past couple of years, it's quite possible we won't see much movement there, and R2 management might even decide to look elsewhere to bring in new presenters in future.
    • With OJ covering on bank holidays. She is the best person for the job however... they're going to end up with a situation like Scott covering R1 breakfast back in the day, where she spends quite a bit of time off her own slot covering Breakfast, plus her own holiday and other commitments. She's been filming for something recently which has meant she's been off several days a week since May. She was off last week, on breakfast this week, OJ is on Mon/Tues next week, then She's off the following two weeks.
    • Looking back at this I would say now that Sara is the main cover - I think she has been reestablished as it now
