Viv's worked out digital TV - RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!

The music choices on Capital FM may be similar to Radio1 but in my experience there seems to be far more repetition through the day, and there seems to be far more repetition through the day too. Then there's the crappy DJs... and the repetition.

I mean, if drivetime was not national, it wd not be on my tv would it. i was listening to someone called will cozens last night. awful man. btw, i have been reading an article today that says capital would not be so popular in scotland if it went national because of our love of local radio. I disagree. i would totally leave local aside if mills got a brekkie slot. even his name has gotta increase capital's popularity tenfold surely. can i get capital fm on my mobile?

The version being put on Digital is what London gets when they use a regular radio to listen, probably because they don't feel it's worth having different channels for all the regional variations. It's also possible to watch TV from other regions over Digital and the Internet, so this would not be an issue.

Also when it comes to local radio, I had the impression Real Radio was the station of choice in many parts of Scotland?

Tbh, i find real radio bloody awful. So are clyde (glasgow). i listen to westfm (ayr)... Not too bad at all actually. one of their djs, colin mccardle, needs to get snapped up by a national. anyhow, yeh, something new could be good. maybe just a thought, doovde, but could capital london be judging how popular they are via digital radio on tv?

I've posted similar over on cm.net, but here goes...

1: Capital going national. It's well known in radio & media circles that Global group (who own Heart & Capital) don't want local anymore. The existing 7hours weekdays & 4 hours weekends of "local" (I'd call it regional, but still) content is only paying lip-service to Ofcom - if they were allowed to drop the local stations, they would like a shot. I can see Heart going first, but who knows.

2: BBC-national is not the same as Global-national. In Global-land, national just means all the stations networked together. In BBC-land, national means just that. BBC network radio covers from Lands End to John O'Groats, offshore islands, the lot. Can you get Heart in Orkney on FM, or Capital in Falmouth? Nope.

3: With the state of commercial & local radio in this country being as it is (i.e. falling apart if it wasn't for the BBC), I'm not surprised Capital would be looking to R1 as the possible source for a new big-name DJ. It's not as if there's many other proving grounds left. But the prestige of working for R1 over Heart or Capital surely stands for something... As much as I would be worried if Global didn't have their eyes on a few big-R1 names, I just can't see it happening...

Rant over :-)

Thanx so much for posting this, jappitts. It explains several things i was puzzling over. and yep, the prestige of working for radio one is much higher...., question is, for how long? with r1 continually focusing on younger djs, how much time does mills really have left? plus, as i said before, the money .... How much would be on offer to pull in a very big name.

Just a thought, are radio 1 actually focusing on younger DJs? Have they ever said that, or is it just the media (looking at the Scum, the Daily Heil, and The Guardian), who claim they should be?

Of course they will be hiring younger DJs because any descent older DJ will already be in a contract, and younger DJs will be more impressionable and come with fresh ideas.

I need to go to the orange shop at some point. i have found a slot in my phone for earphones, but cannot seem to open it. as technology gets more advanced, life becomes more complex, i think.

Have you tried turning it off and on again? *tech cliche #1827

Right, thanx to Samuel Bailey off of R1, here is a blog debating who will replace Vaughan:-

www.mattdeegan.com - Capital Breakfast topic

The focus seems to be on Dave Berry being the most likely candidate for the slot, rather than Mills.

THIS BIT: Very interesting :-

"Now, they’ve renewed Moyles for another few years to give the station some breathing room whilst they advance their talent plans, but by doing so they’ve piled on the trouble for the future. By then he’ll be even more off target and his disappearance will lose them a stack of older listeners plus they’ll have to work hard to re-attract the 15 to 24s who’ll already be listening to another breakfast show – perhaps the new one from Capital?"

As a bit of background to Matt Deegan: he is one of the people involved in analysis of data for the BBC (Trust), so they can see/interpret how they are doing. :-)

OK, so it does appear that it is the media fueling all this stuff. The thing is, the DJs also seem to appear to have to suffer for R1's on-going obsession with a youth audience - look what happened to Jo Whiley !!

Look at some of the replies to the above blog. People know Mills is getting older, as is Moyles.

Also: I continue to be fascinated by the fact the research for my other topic "R1 failing to reach target audience" was, in fact, done by Capital themselves. They're competitive and it looks like they will go out their way to get ahead.

Does that involve offering an R1 DJ god knows how much extra money, so they themselves can shoot up the ladder in the World of radio?

    • I don't feel there's so much overlap between M&M and Scott's shows. M&M is of a similar calibre to Scott & Chris on R1, with genuine laugh out loud moments and usually a show packed full of real interesting content. Scott's R2 show is IMO a shadow of the stuff he did on R1 (not his fault, he's doing exactly what station management want), with music and content to appeal to a much older audience.
    • To be fair, Scott & Chris would've still been fine on Radio 1. It was mentioned at the time that Scott's move was very much on Radio 2's part rather than Radio 1 wanting to move them on. That's the one problem that Radio 2 has, trying to appeal to such a wide demographic.. it's the perfect listen for many, but equally a turn off for many others. I think they have the balance fairly right.
    • I agree Scott has always been a good standalone presenter, but always better when with someone. When chappers left the radio one show it felt a different show and Chris joining was what it needed and brought new life. for the format of the radio 2 show Scott’s show fits well with the station but again, there’s the huge gap between radio1 and 2 As been said already old radio2 listeners feel it now feels too young with latest changes, yet old radio1 listeners still feel radio 2 feels too old. The inbetween stage demographic of too old for radio 1 but too young for radio 2 is still not catered for radio 2 was left to grow old with its audience for too long and to change things up now feels to try and change a brand image the right thing to do is leave it as it is and cater for that 1.5 demographic which I’m sure the new proposed 00s and 10s station will do if approved. Problem is it’s so overdue that by the time it gets off the ground these listeners are already likely to be lost and the changing image of radio2 likely to lose what it stands for as a brand with the “it’s too young now “  moving to boom and the “ it still sounds old “ crowd not able to move with their favourite presenters like Scott so finding themself on capital a radio 1.5 would have been perfect for Scott and Chris, seems unlikely but this is why I think who branding of bbc radio needs a rethink if these new stations get off ground
    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
    • Some similar names to Big Weekend.  Sabrina Carpenter, David Guetta, Perrie, Bradley Simpson, Jax Jones, Caity Baser, Benson Boone, Rudimental. David Guetta is a good name.
    • Still Scott for me. I'm not too much into the 70s and 80s radio 2 play but do love the injection of 90s and 00s. Then Radio 2 push for all this country stuff and it not a UK thing, and I frankly don't like it. Scott's show as in features, hit and miss. I like the music police bit, but it feels like someone needs to join him. It's a shame Chappers is so busy with sports, as it feels like it could do with someone like him jumping on to help. Or a new partner. Radio 1, take or leave. Matt and Mollie are OK from what I've heard and share a good connection, but it's the playlist that throws me off. They could bring back Chris Moyles to do that show, but as soon as something like Headie One comes on with that casino keyboard produced crap. It would still be switched off from me.
    • Reading through this thread, I don't feel quite so alone now, in thinking that Scott Mills on R2 is not a good 'fit' (even less so than on R5).  I can't quite explain why this is so - I just know it to be so.
    • Arielle has been on holiday for the last 2 weeks getting married / honeymoon.  It'll be live from this week onwards.
    • CassKidd is in for Sian on Sunday 5th May.
    • The brought to tiers feature was also very good from them. I did wonder which DJ's were going to get picked out of the hat, that could have gone one way or the other and the caller said they were very opinionated lol. Correct decision putting katie in god tier!
    • The extended Dua Lipa track from M&M was very funny. I'm hoping Matt and Mollie and Scott have a good relationship a bit like Greg and Zoe collaborate on-air sometimes.
