DC's Jobs & Education thread

DC

Recommended Posts

well being as the tories are in power, jobs are in danger due to these insane over-the-top cutbacks. and it also seems to be hard getting back into work if you fall out of it. so this could be a thread with suggestions, links and help for everyone.

my situation at the moment isn't looking clever. compared to this time last year the work is poor in comparison and im looking at other options. i've mentioned before that i'd like to go into computer repairs and stuff for work, my local college is running courses to do with that which i plan to look at.

but if im honest i'm confused. i mean i don't know if i should go for something like working for the royal mail for example or wait for college, or hold on and see if things pick up as they are. i've always worked for myself apart from when i was about 17 working in a shop. so i don't even know where to begin.

on the grid.

O, and there's a Site called linkedin - for graduates, MPs, potential MPs, etc. - that's not a bad one.

- the jobs situation is bang out of control, and even when you're in a job, employers can treat you like shit at the moment.

I've just been to an interview today, which I have managed to get myself thrown of. Obnoxious bloody cow just interviewed me. Fat arsed cow.

Things are bound to turn around DC, but it's WHEN.... I think it's a question of getting your CV to the top of the pile as well, the minute you see a job advertised, and following it up by 'phone as well (so you look keen).

what about night classes while you continue to work?

If this is also an education thread, can I talk about my education? I don't think I know one person at my school that doesn't want to go to uni. Actually, I know two. But whatever. And out of everyone else, I only know one person who doesn't want to go to a top one.

They annoy me by going on about the need for a good education and qualifications. Insulting.

I got told the other day that I would never get into uni because I haven't taken a language at GCSE. It was by a French teacher but still... And then they decided to raise the fees to nine grand a year. So if you go to uni, when you graduate you'll be in debt £27,000 and probably not get a job. Great.

i guess so. i was thinking of college courses leading possbily to work, but there's people around who'll know more than me about this so feel free to mention education beyond gcse's. that's relevant i suppose.

Really? It's not compulsory to do so at my school, although it's VERY strongly advised. After all, we are a modern foreign languages specialist school. And science specialist, which means we have to do three sciences compulsory.

A lot of language teachers advise you to take two languages, but I can say about three words in Spanish and only 'Je suis un stylo' in French, so I'm only taking German. Then again, I'll have the equivalent of a C at GCSE in each of those three languages by the end of this year…

From year 7-9 at our school you have to do either Spanish or French now days. They used to do German and Italian as well but they let people take them for three years (7-9) but stopped them before GCSE. On another education note; I've just done my GCSE's and got my sixth form pack through today and the school is now charging £35 for the first year to enrol and £25 for the second year.

My school is a MFL specialist among other things, and offer: French, Spanish, German, Italian, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Urdu and Bengali ( both after school).

You choose one for year 7, the school gives you the second. I chose Spanish and got Latin...

The job situation is pretty poor here, and as Viv says, if you do have a job they feel they can treat you like crap.

There are loads of jobs in Australia. I think I'm going to move there because living here just makes me depressed. University isn't worth it unless you know what you want to do. I went because I didn't know what else to do but it didn't get me anywhere much, just delayed the inevitable and got me in more debt. The debt doesn't bother me though because I don't have to pay it back unless I get a proper job, which is seeming unlikely.

sounds like a plan, considering australia was created for prisoners and criminals they seem to have it better than we do. my friend works for the local council, and he said around here it's full of somalians who seem to get everything on the free, even cars. the council said there's no more room and they can't let anymore in, and the e.u are now going to try and prosecute them over human rights laws. what a discrace. if the government spent the money that goes to them on re-investing and creating jobs instead of cutting, then the deficit would be sorted.

back to the jobs. i've updated my cv recently for the first time since 2005. i've already sorted a profile on monster, and i'm going to go though all the sites mentioned above. i kind of like the idea of the newsletters telling you there's a job. but i get the feeling that i'm going to be outnumbered in applicants, and i've only experience in one thing so that's going to count against me. it's really not looking good for me.

here's another site, i've been signed up to their newsletters for a while and there's been nothing of yet around my area. but they do seem to get plenty of job ads go through them. useful if you want to get work in radio, tv & newspapers etc:-

The thing as well these days is to be first into an employer's inbox when applying. I know of a local business whose inbox was jammed packed with CVs the minute they put an ad out there.

There's maybe gotta be a bit of thinking outside the box these days to get anywhere.

There are also recruitment Agencies to consider. So, if you don't get something online, THEY can also be looking for work for ya.

I've joined 4 recruitment agencies so far !!

Am I just stupid or am I right in thinking that you don't have to pay for sixth form? Or do you? Does it depend?

I LOVE your school.

Plus, you start at year 7. So does everyone else. I feel disadvantaged. :(

If you stay on at sixth form, depending on how much your parents earn, you get a EMA (education manitance allowance) I think this is because it's not compulsary to stay on. But now they're making new rules so that you have to stay on till you're 18. My year is the last that can leave at 16 and get paid to stay on.

You don't pay for VI form but the school might ask for voluntary payments... my school is £25 a year, which goes towards publication of the annual school magazine, school trips funds for those who can't afford it, and some goes to the CCF.

What's so great about my school?
