Helping birds is our passion and now it can become yours, too. We welcome you to adopt one or more birds in care as part of IBRRC’s Adoption Program. When you adopt an orphaned duckling, heron, egret or endangered brown pelican, the bird you adopt wears a federal band with a number that identifies it as your bird.*

Adopting a bird for yourself or a friend is a wonderful way to give a gift of life to other bird lovers and help us continue helping our bird friends in need. We've had birds adopted as wedding presents, memorials of people, pets and special animals, birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, anniversary presents and celebrating the birth of a baby.

Your adoption package includes a beautiful certificate of adoption that includes the band number of your bird, place and date of release. Every adoption also includes an year long membership to IBRRC. IBRRC will not inundate you with mailings. We do quarterly updates via e-mail and invite you to e-mail us with questions or comments and hope you will visit our website often. It is full of information about us, our history, and our work around the world. We use the donations we receive to help fund our rehabilitation program. Your donation goes directly to animal care, not marketing programs.

Did you know that since 1972 IBRRC has banded over 50,000 birds? We have the word “research†in our name because the birds we band become lifetime subjects of study, and provide a great amount of data. IBRRC is one of only a few rehabilitation centers in the US that is part of the USFWS Federal Banding Program.

We began our adoption program in the summer of 2004, when we received over 100 juvenile brown pelicans at our San Pedro center. They were unable to find food and were starving. Knowing from past experience that each pelican we rehabilitate costs approximately $200, we decided to initiate an adoption program for this endangered species. It was so successful we quickly ran out of pelicans and had to start a waiting list!

A lot of mouths to feed

Every spring and summer our centers are filled with orphaned waterfowl and aquatic birds that have lost their parents for many different reasons. We all are aware that the loss of wetlands and problems with our oceans create incredible stress on birds trying to survive in habitats that continue to shrink due to urban sprawl.

Waterfowl are adaptable to certain human actions but loss of habitat and food sources mean many birds are forced into areas that are unsafe, or polluted. Mallard females who typically nest in the same area every year, may find what was once a wetland, is now a condo complex with swimming pools. She and her babies now face a host of dangers, including dogs, cats, and cars.

In 2007 we successfully raised and released over 1,200 orphan ducklings and 500 herons and egrets. In all IBRRC's two bird centers received nearly 4,000 birds for treatment. That’s a lot of mouths to feed!

*Note: Your sponsorship of a bird is to help raise and release each bird. You do not actually get to keep the bird.

there are different birds to adopt & varying prices, you get a certificate (the website does) & i think you can give the bird a name (im not 100% sure on this, the admin on the other site said they think you can) anyway anyone interested in doing this, the best way would be to donate money here on UM to Jono & PM him to say you have donated & how much so Jono can distinguish the money coming in to the site & he as UM owner can adopt the bird/s on the sites behalf.

anybody interested in doing this ?

    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
    • Some similar names to Big Weekend.  Sabrina Carpenter, David Guetta, Perrie, Bradley Simpson, Jax Jones, Caity Baser, Benson Boone, Rudimental. David Guetta is a good name.
    • Still Scott for me. I'm not too much into the 70s and 80s radio 2 play but do love the injection of 90s and 00s. Then Radio 2 push for all this country stuff and it not a UK thing, and I frankly don't like it. Scott's show as in features, hit and miss. I like the music police bit, but it feels like someone needs to join him. It's a shame Chappers is so busy with sports, as it feels like it could do with someone like him jumping on to help. Or a new partner. Radio 1, take or leave. Matt and Mollie are OK from what I've heard and share a good connection, but it's the playlist that throws me off. They could bring back Chris Moyles to do that show, but as soon as something like Headie One comes on with that casino keyboard produced crap. It would still be switched off from me.
    • Reading through this thread, I don't feel quite so alone now, in thinking that Scott Mills on R2 is not a good 'fit' (even less so than on R5).  I can't quite explain why this is so - I just know it to be so.
    • Arielle has been on holiday for the last 2 weeks getting married / honeymoon.  It'll be live from this week onwards.
    • CassKidd is in for Sian on Sunday 5th May.
    • The brought to tiers feature was also very good from them. I did wonder which DJ's were going to get picked out of the hat, that could have gone one way or the other and the caller said they were very opinionated lol. Correct decision putting katie in god tier!
    • The extended Dua Lipa track from M&M was very funny. I'm hoping Matt and Mollie and Scott have a good relationship a bit like Greg and Zoe collaborate on-air sometimes.
    • Gary Davies in for Vernon Kay tomorrow (Monday 29th April).
    • When Scott and Chris announced their departure from R1, I remember there was lots of speculation about who would take over the 1pm slot. Matt and Mollie were talked about a lot on here, and at the time I really didn't rate them as a replacement. A few years on, I see that I was totally wrong. They are such a good pairing, and it's the same kind of duo as Scott and Chris, in that they are real life friends, who spend time together in their real lives, which really does come across on air. True friends having a laugh together, and everyone is invited is how it feels to me now. I never thought about it before, but I agree with @coffeeandgin that Mollie is the Scott of the duo - pop obsessed and maybe a litte ditsy, but so funny, and in need of someone to anchor to or bounce off.  It seems that Matt is the kind of Chris of the duo then in that comparison, the one with the ideas, but also needs another person to make the magic happen. I know I'm outside of the R1 demographic, and maybe Dean and Vicky were meant to be younger and fresher, but I'm sure in my younger years I would have preferred to listen to two people who had a genuine connection and could really make each other laugh, as well as have the listeners laugh along. That was the Scott and Chris factor for me, and I think the only pair that come close to that now are Matt and Mollie.
