Starting university in September 2009

Sorry for bumping old thread, but I finally applied in a rush and a fluster.

Applying for History at Cardiff will surely end up a waste for me, they want an AAB! Not even my predicted grades will get me anywhere with that. Wanna keep it Wales for the easy travel and... *cough* grants. I've got some smaller universities closer to me that are sure bet though.

Hows it going for everyone else?

I've applied for Journalism at Leeds and Lincoln (as the two I actually want to go to) with Cardiff and Sheffield on the application because it's probably a good idea to have more.

Got an offer from Leeds, waiting on Lincoln. I'll be at the applicant day in March at Lincoln, which should be nice... I'm not too worried about getting an offer from there, as with my experience they seemed to want me already. Well, the community radio station there, Siren, they pretty much offered me a slot already, and that was just from an open day XD

My interview was for Journalism today at Lincoln and it was really good, had so much fun! I won't spoil it for you by telling you what happens but everyone was really friendly and helpful. I went on my own and got incredibly lost though, met new friends too, there was only 12 of us all together and we got on well.

I know you said not to spoil it, but from what I know already, you get to do stuff as well to get a taster of the course, right?

Also, has it changed your opinions on order of choices of where you want to go..?

Yeah, its really good fun. They didnt follow the timetable that was sent in the post, there was only 12 of us so we just stayed as one group.

Yes it has, Im waiting on my offer from them to make my final decision but Sheffield Hallam and Lincoln are my top two.

I was hoping to do one of the January ones, but decided March due to exams. I almost could have seen you there! :P

Interesting choice with Sheffield Hallam - I never even looked at that one... I had a look at Sheffield itself, didn't think much of it - and it was a bit too much focussed on newspaper journalism for me, and I'm more interested in the broadcasting side, so Leeds was recommended, and I found Lincoln too - both BJTC accredited, so that's good.

Arrrgh, waiting for offers is a paaaain :(

Aye it is isn't it? I've got 4 out of my 5 but can't send off my conformation until the final uni gets back to me.

I've applied to do Sports Journalism at Bedforshire, Brighton, Central Lancashire, Staffordshire and Sunderland, and i have conditional offers from all except Brighton which is a pain as its my 4th choice.

Really looking forward to going to uni, especially can't wait for this year to be over.

Hurrah! Update. Offer from Sheffield, not too bothered about that, but Cardiff have emailed me asking if I actually want to do it, as they think I'd be better on a vocational course. It's fair enough, I would. I meet the grades needed (well, am predicted to), and if I'm interested in going with that course an offer can be made.

Hmm.

    • Agree, all I'd see on x was medical professionals from other health trusts having a very carefully worded pop at each other, mixed in with a clip of jeremy vine with a camera on his helmet, a very strange place indeed! I imagine they have some data to back it up, but is the r2 audience really using tiktok?
    • I get not putting resources into X which these days is a strange mix of angry political debate and adult content only. But you'd think Facebook was still the most popular social channel amongst Radio 2 audiences.
    • Radio 2 seem to have decided that their strategy is just short video, so it does probably make sense with Instagram and TikTok. But I find it hard to believe there's not longer form content that wouldn't suit Facebook better.
    • These late announcements are so lacklustre. It's not quite like the time they announced Harry Styles last minute!
    • Friday - Nathan Dawe, Wilkinson Saturday - Jax Jones Sunday - London Grammar, Remi Woolf, AJ Tracey
    • Probably got fed up of the usual moaning bastards all over it, asking for Ken Bruce and Jimmy Young back on air.
    • Think it may have been better to include Radio 1 in this and 1 xtra ultimately focus on boosting a BBC Sounds social media to bring the multi-generational content marketed to a broader audience through one singular channel and having a separate social brand skewed to younger audiences maybe they should consider just having a @BBC @BBCSounds  @BBCSport @BBCNews @BBCFresh (youth brand) social media acounts national.
    • Although a lot of their target audience do seem to be moving across to Instagram now.
    • I suppose it's because not a lot of people use Twitter (or X) so maybe it's not worth their time, surprised about Facebook though.
    • Surprised to learn Radio 2 and 6 Music are moving away from X and Facebook, I would have thought there's more appeal in Radio 1 doing that instead. Their target audiences still use Facebook, and it's still a key way to reach a good mix of audiences. Agree about X though, don't see any need for it. https://radiotoday.co.uk/2024/05/bbc-radio-2-and-6-music-quit-facebook-and-x-publishing/
    • Just wondering…has any DJ got the answer wrong yet? I’ve not heard one and they are pretty tough questions! 😆
    • On the weekends theme @Bluestraw said this in the chatbox but I was listening live to James cusack's show yesterday and agree it would be a travesty if he doesn't feature in the weekend plans. Both the greg james fb page and users on digital spy are saying similar. Imagine that, being both part of the LGBTQ+ community but able to appreciate good presenters in 2024.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
