Competitions to return in November

The BBC will begin a phased return of competitions on its TV, radio and online services from November following the end of a trawl of its programming for further evidence of viewer deception.

Mark Thompson, the BBC director general, today revealed that four more examples of serious editorial breaches had been discovered to add to the six that emerged in July.

The BBC Trust said it was "very concerned" by the new breaches and in particular that editorial guidelines were not being followed in certain parts of the corporation.

Around 25 people will be disciplined over the incidents, including former Blue Peter editor Richard Marson, who is understood to have been sacked, and 6Music director of programmes Ric Blaxill, who is said to have left the BBC of his own accord.

Competitions on the BBC's services have been suspended since July, but the corporation said it would begin a "phased and controlled" return of them from November following a "strengthening of editorial guidance and control".

In future, contests will have to be approved and supervised at a "senior" level within each output area, the BBC said.

Mr Thompson told the BBC Trust yesterday that he expected a "significant reduction" in the number of competitions following the new rules.
