No 'Brand New Cheesy Song' when Grimmy takes over

[h=1]No sung jingles for Radio 1 breakfast show[/h]Radio 1 is to scrap sung jingles on its breakfast show when Nick Grimshaw takes over from Chris Moyles next month.

In a document sent to music firms, the station said it was looking to commission a new theme different to previous shows.

It said the theme must "sound slickly produced and original" and feature "live instrumentation and an identifying motif (logo)".

The Radio 1 breakfast show with Nick Grimshaw begins on 24 September.

"The new breakfast show will sound young, exciting, big and confident," the document goes on.

"It needs to stand out and not sound like any previous BBC Radio 1 breakfast shows. Please steer clear of sung jingles and variants of breakfast themes and identities past and present."

Outgoing presenter Chris Moyles has based his show around sung jingles over the past eight years.

The jingles - which are written by Moyles together with jingle specialist Music 4 - sparked controversy after it emerged in 2006 the DJ was paid royalties every time he played them.

The pitching document states the newly commissioned theme would be purchased on an "all rights" basis.

This would allow BBC Radio 1 to fully own the package "in perpetuity and exclusively", with the creator retaining his or her composer rights.

So that's it, no more Brand New Cheesy Songs... ever. Probably not Grimmy's style anyway so I doubt it's that much of a big deal.

Not sure I see the problem with Moyles getting Royalties for something he wrote though... even if he did have control over how often it was played in a way (although surely producers etc could overrule).

No surprises there. In any case....

"The new breakfast show will sound young, exciting, big and confident," the document goes on.

Surely they mean young, boring, small and unconfident? No way a London centric breakfast show will take off. It'll be replaced after two quarters. Which is a shame because I really like Grimmy.

Aim at 15 yr olds, and they don't count

Eh... I thought that was where R1's target range started?!? That's the point to it all by the BBC Trust?

As to older ones.... the key mistake R1 have made (in fact, just one of the key mistakes) is a LARGE NUMBER of older listeners like new music - so, get rid of one presenter, the older listeners move on to the next. Grimmy LOVES all the new music, and that enthusiasm will make me move across to him in Brekkie and listen to him. Moyles will be GREATLY missed, but we will all get used to Grimmy somehow.

Radio 2 (as stated before) is TOO OLD for so-called "older" listeners - the playlist includes 60s stuff that 40+s aren't actually recognising, so epic fail. Lot of the commercial stations are CRAP, so it brings us right back to Radio 1, and once again, the BBC Trust aren't gonna be happy.

Think removing jingles is gonna cut it? Unbelievable.

Personally I'm more worried about the large bulk of the listeners who don't necessarily listen to radio one just for music. Hey, if we wanted to mindlessly listen to new music we could go anywhere, commercial stations are crap to be sure, but if your interested in just the music you tune out when the crap is on. Radio one listeners come for the personality of the DJs in my experience, and management have been systematically wiping that out for the last couple of years.

If it keeps going the way it is it'll become like all the commercial stations, the only difference being the lack of advertisements.

15 year olds aren't counted in RAJAR figures, so the likelihood is, Moyles has a much larger audience than the figures suggest.

And I totally agree with you about radio 2. Their remit starts at 30 years old, yet they have whole shows without playing a song since 1982. It's radio 2 who should be being looked at, not radio 1...

ANOTHER quick point... does anyone think Beccy could be producing the breakfast show? She seems to be getting quite pally with Grimmy at the moment...

*nods* agrees. Noticed Scott yesterday being a bit sarcastic with her yesterday afternoon, asking if she didn't find something funny, when she had failed to laugh (or respond) on air.

Thing is though, with her illness, it would need to be part-time/split between two producers?!

As is now being discussed on cm.net, the new Brekkie Show is to be called "The Breakfast Show With Nick Grimshaw", as opposed to "The Nick Grimshaw Show" - smart, very smart. It is easily replaceable with another DJ name, should Grimshaw not work out, and doesn't really stick in your mind.

Chris has two producers at the moment, and an exec, so Beccy could quite feasibly be going...

I was thinking last night that Radio 1 might go through quite a few breakfast presenters quickly, 'to keep it fresh' until they find someone who stands out, and then they'll keep them. Several changes would also further distance it from Moyles.

As a side note: The breakfast show with... sounds VERY heart esque. VOMITS.

been listening to other brekkie shows this week just to prepare myself if i dont like grimmy. Their is some good stuff on but most of them are cover, JK and Lucy on Heart, enjoyed greg burns on capital interviewing keith lemon, wasnt to keen on xfm. Looks like it will most likely be Chris Evans on R2 or Cristian O Connol on Absolute for me

Yup. Know how you feel. I don't like Chris Evans, so won't be heading THAT way. My local radio mercifully has a smashing presenter if the worst comes to the worst. Guy with loads of energy.

It speaks volumes that Grimmy is going into brekkie, and listeners are already organising back-up plans.

I think Grimmy will be quite good depending on how much of himself he's going to be able to be of course. If he's going to be heavily regulated then he won't be good at all. I already switch over to Mike & Chelsea on Key 103 if a crap song comes on or someone is being interviewed like Dappy/Cheryl so i know they're good.

Just listening to Grimmy and he said thanks to the Independant for letting him know what his show was going to be called.
