No more GCSEs...

So this leaked on Twitter yesterday that Michael Gove wants to change GCSEs back to O-Levels.

BBC News:

Mr Gove is reported to be preparing to scrap GCSEs for England from autumn

2014, but did not confirm any details.

He was summoned to the Commons to answer urgent questions after details were

leaked to the Daily Mail.

Mr Gove said action was needed because the current exam system was letting

children down.

"Children are working harder than ever but we are hearing that the system is

not working for them," he said.

"We want to tackle the culture of competitive dumbing down."

He said rigor needed to be restored to the system if England was to keep pace

with educational improvements in some other countries.

There was also some analysis of this whole thing on the BBC as well:

The timing is certainly not good, with tens of thousands of teenagers in the

final days of their GCSE and A-level exams catching headlines suggesting the

government does not think their exams are tough enough.

I finished my GCSEs yesterday, and then that evening apparently they're not hard enough. I'm sorry, but I've been revising for about three months solid, and now they're going to be seen as not as good as people taking the new O-Levels.

What do you think?

I do hate this constant assumption that happens each year on Results day that 'GCSEs are too easy', it's ALWAYS by people who haven't taken them and therefore wouldn't know.

This Tory party need to stop living in the past, they also need to tackle bigger problems than celebrities dodging a miniscule amount of tax compared to some corporations doing much worse and also their own MPs doing dodgy crap.

Just saw this on Twitter:

They clearly got rid of O-Levels for a reason. Why bring them back when they've been shown not to work.

Yeah, it's the same every single bloody results day. On Newsbeat, there was a clip of Michael Gove saying some like 'GCSEs are bitesize learning instead of a deep understanding'. I'm sorry, but he can p*ss off! It's not just about answering the questions, there is so much to learn, but apparently that's not enough.

I'm so angry at this.

Carr will use this thing as part of his act later on. He is a big guy, he will deal with it and move on. morally wrong? hell, mucking about with education, benefits and everything else. Hell.

And also, Cameron's dad made his fortune using off shore tax dodging. Should he really be the best person to be having a go at Jimmy Carr?

I think the results are going up because more and more people are actually revising and working at passing than ever before. Not due to them getting easier.

I think its a combination of both. To be honest though I'm not convinced in the relevence of exams anyway. Ok they look good on an initial CV but experience/willingness is what really counts and for all you know you could end up doing a job that has sweet f a to do with what you did at school/college. I bet not many people on my bus would think the driver has an A in Higher Physics, and just because I have it doesnt mean I remember any of it either.

In a roundabout way what it also means is that even if your results aren't great you could still end up earning pretty good money later in life.

Yeah I think because there are more people going to university now then there was in the past there is more pressure to do well and compete with those other people perhaps.
