Singers including Leona Lewis, Plan B and Labrinth are pledging their support for the Radio 1 and 1Xtra Academy.

It’s the stations’ biggest ever programme of social action, offering up to 10,000 young people around Hackney in East London the chance to gain skills and experience.

Dizzee Rascal, Ashley Walters, Rizzle Kicks, Lethal B, Adam Deacon, Riz Ahmed, Paloma Faith, Fearne Cotton, Gemma Cairney and Trevor Nelson are also confirmed to take part.

Opening in the run up to Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend, the Academy will feature a range of masterclasses, Q&As, panel sessions, practical workshops and sessions, and the chance to speak to careers advisors on site with advice on CVs and interview skills.

The sessions include:

• Music sessions on how to create your own music and promote it,

• Radio sessions on how to create your own radio broadcast, with advice on scriptwriting and interview techniques. Young people taking part in the music sessions will also get the opportunity to broadcast to the nation as part of a BBC Radio 1Xtra Take It On day, taking the reins on 1Xtra for a whole day on Saturday 16 June.

• Business sessions on the basics of setting up your own business, how to pitch, market and sell and a special Hackney Dragons Event where young entrepreneurs can pitch for investment from our very own Hackney Dragons.

• Fashion sessions on t-shirt design, fashion styling and fashion photography. T-shirts designed by young people at the Academy will be judged by a panel of fashion experts with the winning designs sold as a limited edition Radio 1 Hackney Weekend t-shirt.

• Film sessions on scriptwriting for EastEnders and beginners sessions on producing, directing, editing and camera and sound work. Participants who have completed all film beginners workshops will get the opportunity to make a Hackney-themed spoof film, to be shown on the main stage big screen at the Radio 1 Hackney Weekend.

• Games and software sessions on developing your own app and building your own website.

• Comedy sessions on developing stand-up, as well developing ideas for stage and TV.

• Journalism sessions including how to write and get published and masterclasses with journalists from range of publications including The Daily Star.

From: radio today news - good timing there for Radio 1 and 1Xtra, especially with the ongoing youth unemployment !!

Interesting feature. Never heard of anything like it being done before by the station. I know The Surgery do things about careers and such but nothing like this.

...or when you say the government control the BBC. You might say I haven't given any explanation, but then neither have you.

but you ignored the fact they even have influence... he who controls the funding etc. Viv, to be fair, has now given SOME explanation, (kinda a repeat of what I said) you still haven't.

Yes... but I wasn't online. I'm not sitting here refreshing the page waiting for Viv's reply.

Anyway, you can of course make an argument to do with the funding, but I don't think there is any real 'control' by the government. Both the supporters of the opposition and of the governing parties regularly make claims that the BBC's coverage is biased away from them, but in truth I think the BBC is about as impartial as you can really get. Any bias is quite subtle in any case. I don't think you can say that this scheme is anything to do with the government's wishes, and I think the BBC is more ideologically-biased than in favour of one government or the other.

No, Juggy is long-term. Only shows up when being self-righteous, or to put 'viv world' down.

I don't think that's true at all.

I had a period when I posted quite regularly, then didn't for a while. Please don't be offended when I say that I've never thought of you with the level of importance required to specifically visit this website to challenge you.

I'm not offended ... anyhow, done a bit of researching and found an article on government and radio. in it found this line "since 1926 bbc has operated under royal charter authorised by parliament". also seems decisions may be taken in house of commons.

No! The Royal Charter is the 'law' that decides how much money a TV licence costs. It has no direct power over the organisation in any other way. You can argue that it has an influence over it 'because' of this, but the Royal Charter does not specify any control directly.

Right. Thanx for explaining that. Lot clearer than the article I was reading (American article). :-0

Still can't helping thinking...... high youth unemployment, R1 "happens" to step in... good press all round, including for the Government?!? **

** or is this WAY too conspiracy theory?!?

    • Tara Kumar is in for Alyx on Sunday 13th July.
    • Conor Knight & Lauren Layfield are in for Matt & Mollie on Monday 14th July.  Matt is solo on Tuesday 15th July.  Jerry is in for Mollie between Wednesday 16th & Thursday 24th July.  Maia Beth is covering Future Pop on Wednesday 16th & Wednesday 23rd July. On Sunday 27th July the Chillest Show is reduced to an hour, and 20.00-21.00 is a BBC Proms special with JADE. On Thursday 31st July 18.00-20.00 in place of Jack's show it's the Dance Party Warm-Up with Danny Howard (ahead of the Ibiza weekend).
    • Dean McCullough in for Greg w/c 4th August. James Cusack on EB.
    • Well looks like Mollie is off all month now so presumably a personal matter.
    • Intrigued why Matt & Mollie aren't presenting breakfast on Monday, with James in for them instead (which has happened before).. or even James given a chance to present the breakfast show?
    • Sam & Danni seem to be down for Breakfast on Monday. James Cusack on Going Home. That’s another new name in the list of “people who have hosted Going Home in 2025”.
    • Wednesday, surely? But this is another mess, as this weeks Summer press release said it’ll be Sam & Danni no Jamie from the 28th - so it’s actually a whole week earlier!
    • Jamie Laing’s last show before his summer break will be on Wednesday 16th July.
    • I worked out once Scott spent 3 months of a year off his own slot in the Moyles days and more like 4 in Grimmys days, six weeks of his own holiday and projects, six covering Grimmy plus some ad hoc days
    • Back on topic, I think there's quite a few of the current Radio 1 presenters who would be able to adapt to Radio 2's style in the future. It's more of question of how many of them will actually end up there. With much of R2's line up changed over the past couple of years, it's quite possible we won't see much movement there, and R2 management might even decide to look elsewhere to bring in new presenters in future.
    • With OJ covering on bank holidays. She is the best person for the job however... they're going to end up with a situation like Scott covering R1 breakfast back in the day, where she spends quite a bit of time off her own slot covering Breakfast, plus her own holiday and other commitments. She's been filming for something recently which has meant she's been off several days a week since May. She was off last week, on breakfast this week, OJ is on Mon/Tues next week, then She's off the following two weeks.
    • Looking back at this I would say now that Sara is the main cover - I think she has been reestablished as it now
    • Purley on the R1 Dance station.. Someone on DS said don't expect to see any changes to the schedule on the new stations however if they are taking on Capital Dance with this, which they clearly are, which has live presenters 7am - 10pm except for the 11am mix then they'll surely have to have a proper scheduled set of shows. At the moment Arielle is the only "live" per say show and only "live" a few days a week with earlier shows being repeated Thursday Friday and Saturday. Connor and Charlie are clearly pre records but was this only for the time it was online only and they have already got a schedule ready to go on day 1? also of note is that Charlie is taking over a podcast as well as starting a new project with podcasting which makes me wonder if she is about to step back from Dance Anthems all together to concentrate on those and Connor takes over? So you could have Arielle doing 9-12 weekdays live then someone else 12-3 and Connor live 3-6 on R1D and doing Dance Anthems on a Saturday.
    • As none of the Going Home Team aren't currently on the air, that's a bit if an issue. Considering most of the Dance DJs will be out there, I'm surprised none of them are being utilised to host the 1-4 slot that weekend.
    • Going Home presenters have done the last few years ?
