RAJARs Q3 2010: Evans loses listeners gained in last year

When Chris Evans replaced Sir Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2 the station gained more than a million extra listeners. But the "Evans effect" appears to have faded after listening figures revealed the breakfast show had lost all the audience it gained and now had fewer listeners than this time last year. Evans's show had an average of 8.1 million listeners in the third quarter of this year. This was the same as Wogan had in his three months on the show at the end of 2009, according to industry body Rajar. Evans's audience between 7am and 9.30am was 5,000 listeners down on the same period last year.

Clearly not...

Both Chris Moyles and Chris Evans have taken a drop in listening figures this quarter, with Moyles losing half a million on Radio 1 since three months ago.

At Radio 2, Evans lost 240,000 listeners this quarter but at 8.14m, he's still got more listeners than Wogan did 12 months ago, who had 7.76m.

Over all, Radio 1 reported 11.65 million listeners per week in the quarter, up from the 11.11m last year and slightly down its record high of 11.81 million in the previous quarter. Radio 2 has a reach of 13.68 million – up on last year’s 13.62m and down on last quarter’s 13.73m.

The success story for the BBC this quarter is Radio 3 which attracted nearly 300,000 additional listeners, up from 1.86m last quarter to 2.15 million people every week. Quarter 3 was a period when Radio 3 broadcast every single Prom live from the Royal Albert Hall.

Tim Davie, Director BBC Audio and Music, said: “These are strong figures for the industry, with BBC networks posting solid year-on-year performances after a quarter that saw records broken across the portfolio. Radio 3’s commitment to bring the BBC Proms to a wider audience has been rewarded as the network bounces back above the two million mark.”

Radio 4 has also gone down this quarter but still pulls in 10.37 million listeners.

In digital-only services, Radio 1Xtra posted a record 806,000 weekly listeners – up on last quarter’s 600,000 and last year’s 547,000, and an increase of 47.3 per cent year-on-year. BBC 6 Music attracted 1.20 million weekly listeners in the period – from 624,000 last year and 1.19m last quarter. Radio 7 has a weekly reach of 1.05 million - up both on last quarter (949,000) and last year (884,000) and the BBC Asian Network’s weekly reach is 462,000 listeners, from 437,000 last quarter and 357,000 last year.
