i'm leaving BBC Radio1.... thank you so much for listening.... full statement here: www.myspace.com/maryannehobbs
Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs is to leave the station after 14 years. The DJ, who presents a dance and dubstep show between 2am and 4am on Thursdays, will present her last show on 9 September. She is joining the University of Sheffield to mentor and teach students on its radio, TV station and newspaper.

I can't say I listened to many of her shows - they were simply too experimental for my liking... But I remember her doing 20 mins of early breakfast when Greg James was late. Excellent stuff, I liked her voice and her presentng style. And she's been on Radio 1 for 14 years - an incredible achievement.

So - Maryanne Hobbs leaving, Annie Nightingale's new project...

Oki... I used to like listening to The Breezeblock on Monday nights, and also when she did the Rock Show on a Tuesday night. It was her on the Breezeblock that introduced me to some of the bands and projects I still like today.

She was perhaps wasted with what she did, she hadn't been talked about much during the day like other DJs. A shame but I'm sure she'll be successful. I wonder... jumped or pushed?

I suspect pushed, but with promise of something more suitable elsewhere within the BBC.

Last time I heard her talked about on Radio1, it was probably Mark Radcliffe referring to her as Mary-Anne Hobgoblin...

Professional eater of puppy dogs, baby heads and killer of grannies...

New Job?

In the OP and on her Myspace page she mentions that she's taken a full time job at Sheffield Uni mentoring students at their radio station, tv station and student newspaper.

Yesterday i resigned from BBC Radio1, after an amazing multi-dimensional 14 year career.

The great freedoms the BBC have given in me as a broadcaster, have allowed me to help break so many confrontational artists as diverse as Slipknot and Skream, and of course, the whole genre of Dubstep in recent times.

My current Experimental show is in peak condition, it’s never been stronger. And although it’s a very emotional decision to leave the show that I love so much, it’s also an optimum moment to bow out, at the very top of my game.

My work for Radio1 on the Breezeblock, Rock Show, many fascinating documentaries about everything from David Bowie to Dubstep, on daytime, at festivals and award ceremonies, has been exceptionally rewarding. These have been glory days not just for me, but for all the artists who have shared my BBC platform, and of course, the listeners everywhere from Beijing to Berlin, Baltimore to Blackpool, who shared a great passion for future sound.

I will continue to DJ live, work in film, and curate at Sonar festival in Barcelona.

I have also accepted a new job mentoring and teaching students at the University of Sheffield’s Union Of Students radio station, TV station and the newspaper that operate out of their superb Forge Media Hub, which presents me with a really exciting new challenge.

My last show on BBC Radio1 will be broadcast:

September 8th>>9th … Wednesday night >> Thursday morning… 2-4am

To me it seems she is leaving voluntarily. Her posting sounds positive about upcoming stuff and content with her work at Radio 1. If she had been pushed, she probably wouldn't have posted something on myspace before the BBC press office had published something. And it would sound differently...

As mentioned in other posts this years schedule change will see specialist shows shaken up a bit and daytime left relatively alone before the moyles/mills era ends next year!!

Rob Da Bank to fill this show from Mary Anne Hobbs please!!

    • Richie Anderson in for Rylan tomorrow.
    • Mylo and Rosie said at the end of their show today that they would also be on Early Breakfast on Thursday 24th July (even though the schedule still says Dean)
    • James is in for Dean from Monday 11th to Thursday 14th August. Dean is in for Greg from Monday 11th to Friday 15th August. Jaguar is in for Sarah on Friday 15th August.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Alyx on Sunday 13th July.
    • Conor Knight & Lauren Layfield are in for Matt & Mollie on Monday 14th July.  Matt is solo on Tuesday 15th July.  Jerry is in for Mollie between Wednesday 16th & Thursday 24th July.  Maia Beth is covering Future Pop on Wednesday 16th & Wednesday 23rd July. On Sunday 27th July the Chillest Show is reduced to an hour, and 20.00-21.00 is a BBC Proms special with JADE. On Thursday 31st July 18.00-20.00 in place of Jack's show it's the Dance Party Warm-Up with Danny Howard (ahead of the Ibiza weekend).
    • Dean McCullough in for Greg w/c 4th August. James Cusack on EB.
    • Well looks like Mollie is off all month now so presumably a personal matter.
    • Intrigued why Matt & Mollie aren't presenting breakfast on Monday, with James in for them instead (which has happened before).. or even James given a chance to present the breakfast show?
    • Sam & Danni seem to be down for Breakfast on Monday. James Cusack on Going Home. That’s another new name in the list of “people who have hosted Going Home in 2025”.
    • Wednesday, surely? But this is another mess, as this weeks Summer press release said it’ll be Sam & Danni no Jamie from the 28th - so it’s actually a whole week earlier!
    • Jamie Laing’s last show before his summer break will be on Wednesday 16th July.
    • I worked out once Scott spent 3 months of a year off his own slot in the Moyles days and more like 4 in Grimmys days, six weeks of his own holiday and projects, six covering Grimmy plus some ad hoc days
    • Back on topic, I think there's quite a few of the current Radio 1 presenters who would be able to adapt to Radio 2's style in the future. It's more of question of how many of them will actually end up there. With much of R2's line up changed over the past couple of years, it's quite possible we won't see much movement there, and R2 management might even decide to look elsewhere to bring in new presenters in future.
    • With OJ covering on bank holidays. She is the best person for the job however... they're going to end up with a situation like Scott covering R1 breakfast back in the day, where she spends quite a bit of time off her own slot covering Breakfast, plus her own holiday and other commitments. She's been filming for something recently which has meant she's been off several days a week since May. She was off last week, on breakfast this week, OJ is on Mon/Tues next week, then She's off the following two weeks.
    • Looking back at this I would say now that Sara is the main cover - I think she has been reestablished as it now
