Not convinced by Sunday's Lie-In

I know it's the first show but I'll give my initial thoughts.

I'm not convinced by Sunday's Lie-In. The biggest downfall for me is the fact that the Lie-In is now 12pm-1pm. Do people really "lie in" that late? The fact this show is now two hours of the playlist makes it less than unique now.

Furthermore, Matt could almost be voice tracked. He's just reading out embarrassing text messages. The allure of the show for me was Coxy and her witty banter with callers. Reading out text messages doesn't feel the same in anyway.

I expected to find out how Matt got on with callers to see if he could "bounce off them" rather than talking to himself for three hours.

Well, if you're going to be put the "Lie In" between 12 and 1, rename it. That's just too late to have a lie in show. As for Matt I only heard 20 minutes of the show, and it appears he was just reading out texts, which I enjoyed for the 20 minutes I listened, but if he was doing that for the whole show then no doubt a bit more variety is needed.

As for Matt himself I liked him. He seems a bit different to anyone else we've got on R1, seemed humourous which R1 is lacking at the minute. It sounds to me like he just needs to find a bit more variety and he'll be fine.

It has been renamed - it's called the Sunday Skive now. I liked him too. He's got a nice quirky style and a good voice. Given time, hopefully this week on early breakfast, he'll loosen up a bit and rely less on texts and show more of his own personality.

Yes I have the same hopes for him, but Sunday Skive?

Just the last hour didn't work? Or the whole thing? What sort of show do you reckon he should be doing?

The first two hours didn't work for me as I thought he would be better talking to callers and not reading out texts Nihal style for two hours and "searching for Abs from Five" (an obvious set up for Abs to call in at the end). I expected the Lie In with the shuffle which would have given him a chance to talk to callers. That didn't happen until after 12pm. The 'Skive' didn't seem right at 12pm - it seemed out of place.

If they really want to cut the Lie In down to one hour it should have been 10am - 11am. The 'Skive' element didn't work - they struggled to find people 'skiving' something on a Sunday so go back to it being the Lie In. There must be something other than "funny texts" to use from for two hours and to get some callers on like the other weekend callers have.

Matt is extremely talented and quick witted. He made me laugh a bit with some callers but I feel this show is going to hold him back. If they're going to change the format to work around him it has a long way to go.

Yeah agree with you. I think he relied on the texts a lot today, but I expect he won't as much when he loosens up and becomes more comfortable. They were probably a bit of a safety blanket for him. Likewise, the Abs thing was well intentioned if a little bit flat. He hasn't done radio before, so it'll probably take a while for him to find his style. I'm sure his producers and the bosses will help him do that though. It'll be interesting to hear him on early breakfast this week, where it's slightly less formatted - maybe that'll be his chance to shine...

Right, listened to nearly all of Matt's show today and really enjoyed it. Thought Matt was great, ammusing, few different features, nice balance of texts and calls, finding the guy from Fame Acadamy made me laugh, already a big improvement on last week. I think Radio 1 have found a future star of the station here.

My only complaint about the show, put the classic tunes 10 - 11, not 12 - 1. Aside from that really enjoying Matt's shows.

Oh dear. I can't listen him...I know I know, he's new. Sorry but, he doesn't change the tone of his voice...it's just very "blahhhhh". As well as him, talking to himself. After all, why is he presenting the show?! Couldn't Radio 1 find another talent?! Surely, there are plenty of others who can do better. Unless he needs cracking of the nutshell, then perhaps he can get better.
